I know I usually start these kind of threads and people say I’m trolling but I’m not I just feel a strong need to defend my faith and if I know the answers then I’ll say them but if I don’t I come here looking for answers and I wanna shut this person up with the FACTS

It isn’t really “in the Bible”. As in nobody does it in the Bible. The Bible never directly instructs us to ask for the Sts’ intercession. But who cares. You’ve already lost the arguement if you’ve bought into this protestant’s idea that anything and everything we do has to be “in the bible”. We don’t believe that, we don’t practice that. We have Sacred Tradition.

There’s a scriptural arguement to be made, but I’ll let someone else make it. I think it’s most important to realize that you’re fighting this battle on bad grounds if you agree that “not in Bible” always equals “bad”.

(Also that comic strip is rediculous. We don’t believe any of that. But the strip is correct that worshipping Mary as a Goddess or regarding her as the only one who can please God would be bad.)

The definition of a fact is a thing that is indisputably the case.

Well as already stated here…
You’ve already lost the arguement if you’ve bought into this protestant’s idea that anything and everything we do has to be “in the bible”.
The reason being is because if we base everything on our own “personal interpretation” of the Bible then there can be no indisputable “facts”. Because we can all use proof texts to make the Bible say whatever we want it to say.

That being said here’s the scriptural argument…

Hope this helps,

God Bless

This looks like a Jack Chick comic, and the lies that are written on those things aren’t even worthy to be used as toilet paper. They are some of the most vitrolic anti-Catholic rags I’ve ever come across. According to him, nuns are prostitutes for priests, the “IHS” on hosts mean “Isis Horus Set”, and other dribble. Catholics are always portrayed as angry, swearing a lot, and are of low morals. If they stay Catholic by the end of the comic, they are damned. His arguments against Catholicism are strawmen. Catholics believe only Mary can get them into Heaven? Really? Where’d he get that from? Where’s his source? He didn’t list one, because he has none. It’s incredibly dishonest.

Remember that our faith is not based on the bible, but rather the bible is based on our faith 😉

Perhaps your protestant friend should spend some time reading Luke Chapter 1:
26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth,
27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.
28 And he came to her and said, "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!"
29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be.
30 And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.

39 In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a city of Judah,
40 and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.
41 And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit
42 and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!
43 And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

44 For behold, when the voice of your greeting came to my ears, the babe in my womb leaped for joy.
45 And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.”
46 And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord,
47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,

48 for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed;
49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.

50 And his mercy is on those who fear him from generation to generation.
51 He has shown strength with his arm, he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts,
52 he has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted those of low degree;
53 he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent empty away.
54 He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy,
55 as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his posterity for ever.”
Hail Mary, full of Grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou amongst women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb,
JESUS
Holy Mary, Mother of God
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.

Amen

Notice how the Hail Mary directly quotes scripture.

Notice also what is in the center of the prayer: JESUS.

Notice that our only request from Mary is that she pray for us, that she intercede on our behalf. Our prayers to her are not to worship her, but rather to ask that she prays on our behalf.

Any praise directed towards Mary glorifies not her, but rather God who created her to be a perfect vessel for bringing Christ to the world.

Mary always directs us to her son, like she does in John 2: 5
  1. His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
Mary is like the moon; she produces no light of her own, but rather reflects the light of her Son, Jesus.

@AveOTheotokos has an excellent response. The prayer “Hail Mary” is simply recitation of scripture and asking Jesus’ mother to pray for us.

Its also help to tell your friend there are a few other things not found in the Bible:

Alter calls
Sola Scriptura
An inspired table of contents (i.e. your friend accepts the books of the Bible on tradition)
Jesus saying “go write a book so my followers will know what to believe”
the word “Bible”

I could go on, there is more, but hopefully this helps

This made me laugh. 😂

I was hiking in Maine last week and actually came across one of these. Yep you guessed it in the bathroom toilet stall. I was more than happy to chuck it in the waste basket on my way out of the men’s room.

Jesus granting of Mary’s intercession for others is biblical, John 2, 1-12

She made an appeal on behalf of the wedding hosts.
Jesus objected that it wasn’t yet time for signs or miracles,
Mary showed her faith in His mercy for her appeal, and granted her intercession by remedying the situation.
Basically, Jesus allowed this precedent for Mary’s successful intercession on others’s behalf.
Hence, Mary’s intercession for others is in fact biblical.

God bless you
And God bless your doubting friend

I found an image of the title of that comic and yep… as expected - “by J.T. Chick”

Ignore Jack Chick tract comics. His conspiracy theories regarding our Church are waaay out there and the former “Catholic priest” he used to source his material from was shown to be a con man. Don’t take anything those comics have to say about our faith seriously.

Evangelizing Jack Chick - Why Is Mary Crying? Apologetics
Okay, somehow I thought I heard he had passed away but I guess I was wrong. The fraud I referred to indeed involved Alberto Rivera’s claim to being an ex Jesuit priest. From what I understood he was a con man and Jack Chick got taken in by it. Apparently Mr. Rivera told Jack what Jack wanted to hear and Jack went with it without doing any investigation. Of course that does not imply that Jack would not have gone with it had he done any investigation. We don’t really know but seeing some of…

We are not sola scriptura.

Your friend does not know the meaning of the word “Pray”, ask them to look it up.

Mary was alive when the Epistles were written, she was likely interviewed by St Luke in writing his Gospel.

I would imagine every person who every MET Mary asked her to pray for them. That is what we do,we ask her to pray for us.

Finally, Christ never said we win souls by shutting people up. We win souls through love. Less debate, more love.

Jack Chick tracts are truly diabolical. They serve one master- the Enemy. They blaspheme our Blessed Mother and Our Lord in the Eucharist (there’s one where he shows Satan introducing the Eucharist to the “first pope” and refers to it as “the death cookie”). These tracts are evil… plain and simple… I hope your friend is just very misguided, because it’s hard to encounter more hatred and contempt and vile than you do in Jack Chick tracts.

I remember seeing this in our parish bulletin once - “If you own any books by Chick publications please throw them in the garbage or burn them. They are based on half truths and outright falsehoods and that’s how the devil works to deceive people.” Or something like that.
