The reason that you have such a vast array of theological viewpoints within Protestantism is because each individual interprets scripture based upon his/her understanding. There is no central authority to assist in the determination.

It is clear to any rational individual that you cannot have two differing interpretations of the same text be correct, yet Protestants will argue that each individual has the ability to determine truth based upon the guidance of the Holy Spirit even though these two individuals come to differing determinations regarding the text. They claim “Sola Scriptura” with vehement denial of a church authority. This has lead to vast differences among the various groups, denominations, that have arisen out of the reformation. These divisions are glossed over and not addressed by the majority of Protestant believers.

In an attempt to restore the Church to it’s place as the “pillar of truth” the reformation has instead opened a can of worms that cannot be explained. Their, “return to the truth” has lead to fractures that have separted and divided Christ’s bride.

Actually, I have seen this a few times over the couple of years I’ve been here, though maybe not the “survey fashion” part. If they seem well catechized in the Catholic Church, I recommend the Small Catechism and Augsburg Confession.
The rest, not so much.

Of course, the first major division of Christ’s Church happened 500 years before Luther.

As for individual interpretation, not all of us.

This is also certain, that no one should rely on his own wisdom in the interpretation of the Scripture, not even in the clear passages… We also gratefully and reverently use the labors of the fathers who by their commentaries have profitably clarified many passages of the Scripture. And we confess that we are greatly confirmed by the testimonies of the ancient church in the true and sound understanding of the Scripture. Nor do we approve of it if someone invents for himself a meaning which conflicts with all antiquity, and for which there are clearly no testimonies of the church.

But for someone like you who is quite knowledgable, I’d also suggest The Roman Confutation of Augsburg, and the Apology to the Augsburg Confession, as well as the rest of the Book of Concord.

Would this be what you are referring to as the Roman Confutation of Augsburg?

Nothing malicious about it I assure you.😉 I already had both things you mentioned in post #70 saved on my favorites list (I have even used the Book of Concord to correct Protestants here who say that only Catholics baptize infants and believe in the real presence) and the *Roman Confutation * was the first thing you suggested and as such the first thing I searched for on the Book of Concord web-site.

Really though I was drawn by the word Roman in the title and just had to see what those pesky Lutherans were writing about us… 😃

To be honest, the Confutation is not in the Book of Concord formally, but the website did a good thing by having there for comparative purposes. Pesky Lutherans, indeed! 😃
