Yesterday, I listened to a Protestant radio station and also happened to pause on a Protestant tv show where pastors were teaching. Both messages were about the importance of tithing. I couldn’t help but notice that the entire of message of these people seemed to be about what we can get out of God. Praise God-- because then He will bless you. Pay the church a lot of money-- He will bless you. I’m so glad Catholicism isn’t so obsessed with money.

While I find these kinds of shows offensive, and I agree that the Catholic Church today doesn’t appear so obsessed, it was an obsession for money by leaders in the Church that was in many ways responsible for sparking the Reformation.

That is true… the Church has changed a lot through history.

This kind of preaching is a preaching of greed, like Joel Olstein. He preaches the same thing. He tell you that if you give me money to him or the church then God will give it back to you 10 fold while he goes back to he multi-million dollar house via the bank because as he would claim God has blessed him. These kind of preachers make the rest of the good ones look bad. As I say, taken from J.F.K., ask not what God can do for you but ask what you can do for God. I agree that the Catholics are not obsessed with money like some of the prostestant churches are, but not all are like that so please don’t put all of us in that catigory.

Point taken.

It was a sermon on that subject that led me to turn away from Evangelican Protestantism. While Rev. Kevin is correct, not all are like that, the problem is there is not accountability for what is being preached. If this preacher in this church is preaching such obvious error, what is it that prevents a preacher in another church from preaching error on a different subject? What exactly is this preaching based off of. Eventually, preaching off the bible alone shows that it just isn’t good enough.

You may or may not be surprised to hear agreement on this point. Teachers and teachings require accountability. For Lutherans, it is the Lutheran Confessions that hold a pastor accountable, as we believe they rightly reflect scripture.

Rev Kevin,

The “prosperity Gospels” are preached all over the place, at present. The one good thing I can say about Joel O., is that when he made money on his books, he stopped taking a salary from his Church. Not saying I’m a huge fan, but I do respect him for this.

I do have a problem with ministers drawing huge salaries, while many in their congregations can hardly make ends meet.

Joel Osteen does not ask for money on his broadcasts. Whether you agree with him or not, be accurate. I think you need to study before you start typing things.

It is hard on us who want to serve in humility but,
Here in Oz our parish for planned giving says we should give the first of our fruits thi the parish quoting Leviticus i think.

IMO Yeshua (pbwh) was sent so we could learn the first of our fruits are for those who need.

The Parish collection is used to build a building and run it for the most part, that serves me. That money i give goes to me.

I am for ever talking us down from spending $40k on projectors and audio systems stuff that does not bring spirit but entertainment.

We have a national prayer gathering where they say it costs about approx 18% more to buy a ticket a month before the gathering than it does now.
I dont know but doubt it it is more likely we discount for early reg as it helps in organisation.
Pagen gatherings can book the venues and arrange guest speakers for a flat cost, why are they so blessed.

I encourage people to listen to scripture in their cars but most Catholics i know don t want it.

Is it better they listen to commercial radio, shake your milk. sit on my disco stick, i mean the young kids in the car dont understand the spirit that these people speak of.

Or is Vision radio better? singing songs of praise etc. Dont get me wrong i have listened and sent emails asking who spirit are you speaking for?

I am very close to our Pentecostal fellowship and there is a rising against the greed preaching.

We can help them, with our hearts and prayer, we do need to keep in mind that ministries do need funds and biblically the worker is due his pay.

Please let us pray for all who seek Him to be saved from greed.

Not that kind of change. The teaching remains the same, but the sinners within it have changed much throughout history. We all have our heretics you know. 😉

Actually not surprised to hear agreement on that from a Lutheran, since as far as I’m aware Lutherans only believe everything should be varified by scripture, not that scripture contains everything in and of itself (including its own interpretations). Its why I specified Evangelical Christianity. Most other forms of Christianity do have some sort of accountability. 🙂

The idea of throwing money into the basket and somehow getting rewarded for it is just plain bizarre to me. Treating like a 401k where you have to invest the money to make some money, that’s not what Christianity is about. But this comes from the same type of person who goes to church more for social contacts, making money, and feeling warm-fuzzies instead of truly worshipping and knowing Christ Jesus. I’ve worked with several evangelicals who subscribe to the idea that if I give $1,000 check to the church, $2,000 in cash will fall into my lap in the next couple of months from Jesus as a thank-ya. Weirdsville!

Weirdsville … I been there before. Don’t they have a 7-11 on every corner and people often go about without shoes? Oh, never mind that’s Lawton Oklahoma, next to Fort Sill. Oops, my bad.😉

It’s between Smallville, Mayberry, and Goober, Idaho.

gurneyhalleck1,

I agree. (We actually agree on something. 😉 )

Sadly, the plea for money runs even deeper. I remember my mother getting so upset, when she found letters from a TV Evangelist addressed to my Grandmother–warning her of the spiritual dangers of not sending them money.

My Grandmother came to live with my Mom after my Grandfather died; and her Social Security income was fixed and rather low. My Mom couldn’t believe what those letters were saying. Very disturbing.

Hi Bill
Yes he is still out there and still on T.V. He has taken over not a football place but a basketball building. Yes it is a very big place with thousands of followers. See his father started his church in a barn and when he retired his son took over and when he took his fathers church over he had only preached one sermon a week before. They call him the smiling preacher because he has that silly grin on his face. He lives in a multi-million dollar house funded by his church, through donations and tithings. He traviles the country and charges from $10.00 to over $100.00 per person to hear him preach or speak. I wish he would get off T.V. because he preachs of greed and self reliance. As you know I work with the homeless and we went to him for a small donation and he said he don’t donate to any cause.

That is about par for him,do people that go to this Church not see, I was watching Mike Murdick a week or to ago and He started with 100, and he said he had a mess… from God and God ask him for 1,000 from his member and he got 1,000 bucks from a thousand people and he had it in a hour

I normally don’t post around here but i’m going to chime in on this one. I totally believe that the bases for this type of theology is scripturally nfounded but i’m confused and 'm curious.

I undresatnd this conversation is about tithing but,

I want to know what is the bases for the purpose of Catholic parishes haveing bingo night, enticing people to show up, with the promise of prizes if they win?

I base this question on my experience with the Catholic Parishes in my area.

I don’t believe that God asks any of us to give to get. This comes down to a heart Issue.
