I want to know what is the bases for the purpose of Catholic parishes haveing bingo night, enticing people to show up, with the promise of prizes if they win?
The purpose is to raise money for the parish or its school. That’s easy. There may be an enticement to winnings, but most folks know that usually you don’t win, and you leave your money behind for a good cause. I don’t believe that a Catholic thinks that by doing so, they gain some special favor with God.

I normally don’t post around here but i’m going to chime in on this one. I totally believe that the bases for this type of theology is scripturally nfounded but i’m confused and 'm curious.

I undresatnd this conversation is about tithing but,

I want to know what is the bases for the purpose of Catholic parishes haveing bingo night, enticing people to show up, with the promise of prizes if they win?

I base this question on my experience with the Catholic Parishes in my area.

I don’t believe that God asks any of us to give to get. This comes down to a heart Issue.

I didn’t know the Catholic church was in the Entertaiment business.

so tell me Bill why does the Catholic church need entertainment to raise funds for it’s coffers?

Please show me the the scriptural basis for Entertaniment to raise funds in the church, i have been looking and havn’t found one.

To raise money to pay for the light bill, staff and ministries. Community events are a great vehicle to raise funds for these purposes.

Please again show me the scriptural basis for this practice and how it is obedient to the will of God?

I’m sorry, but i find this a Major obedience issue when churchs have to entice our parisheners with Entertainment and the promise of something in return. If the lights can’t stay on by the pure love, will and desire of the people of the church to continue it’s mission to be a light in a dark world, then maybe the lights should go off.

I see this as no different than the complaint of the OP as in building in expectations to entice people to give away their money.

Jon,

I realize that this has become a way of life for the catholic, I have lived in a catholic community for 50 years. i have also run across Catholics who have a problem with this very idea of enticement as well. what I find most of all is that it is normally the parisheners that really can’t afford it out there playing bingo 3 times a week. winning just enough to keep them going back week afte week month after month. to me this is just as bad as government run lotteries. For it is normally not the rich out there playing the games every week but those who can’t afford it, in hopes of the “mother load”.

My question is not about what the people think but about the responsibility of the church leaders which the OP eludes to and seems to have a problem with.

My point to the op is how many direction can we point when we really start anylizing all the churches around us.

my point is not about weather one is getting special favors from God, but does the end justify the means?

Bill,

I am not disagreeing with you on if we, Gods children, should support the poor and homeless these are good works and the churches do the same thing around here as well.

I will rephrase the question I initially asked you;

why does the Catholic church or any church for that matter should require the use of entertainment to raise funds for it’s coffers?

This is a philosophical question based on the integrity of church leadership and there interpretation of Scripture. I have been told by those who have run the numbers , that if all christians where to give a tithe ( 10th ) of there income, churches would have no need to beg for money.

question:

Did not the Church at Corinth give out of the desires of their heart or because they where promised prizes on bingo night.

or you must believe that the end justifies the means. It doesn’t matter how the church gets its money, just as long as it get’s it and the end cause is righteous.

which parishioners are attending your bingo nights. The ones who have the extra money for the entertainment value or those who don’t have it with the hopes of maybe winning a little bit extra. or do you really know?

As far as me not posting my religion, I want you to find out what I believe not what some church or religious charter says.

I’m not going to give you the opportunity to prejudice my beliefs.
Get to know me for me not the church I attend. :tiphat:

You may be right, but it is in no way comparable to the rackets run by so-called evangelists on tv, that entice people to give up their savings for a prayer that is supposed to bless them to a hundred fold. Not saying your are implying that, though.
