Protestant uncle gone mad on Facebook

so my uncle posted a supposed quote that Pope john paull II said on his facebook status.

i was going to comment on his post and say that he should provide evidence that John paull II ever said, but i didn’t want to get into a big debate with him until i was ready to do so.

The following link below was the quote he posted on his facebook status.

Now, I didn’t want to post the quote on here word for word because he might google search the quote just to prove me wrong and the first thing that might pop up is my thread. And i really like keeping my privacy.

so my question is how should i go about this facebook status of his and can anyone confirm if this quote is true. Thanks and God bless!
 
After that post he also quoted more bible verses that talk about the antichrist on his status update.
 
Someone who makes a post like that is interested in provoking, not in learning more. My vote is that you save your time and energy and just let it be.

First thing is always asking for a citation to a JP2 source, not some internet rumor mill. That is: exactly when and where was he supposed to have said this. Always demand verification. And treat it like the junk it is, hardly worthy of a moment’s notice.

I don’t think JPII, or any other Pope, ever said anything to that effect. Same way that no Pope ever declared Mary as part of the Trinity, nor that people become angels if die young, etc.

If your uncle can’t cite it to an original document - and, c’mon, we keep pretty good record of the Pope’s speeches, encyclicals and writings - then it doesn’t exist. Chick tracts don’t count.
 
While Augusta is right that it is not likely that he wants to learn, you still can’t just let him insult your faith. It will encourage them to continue to damage the faith of others. First of all the man who allegedly wrote this is not a writer who I can find. In addition were this quote true it would be on the Vatican website which records everything the pope says and does in public. Finally if it were true it would mean our pope was breaking catholic doctrine and would have to declare himself a heretic!

So should i just ignore my uncle’s post? or should I reply to him and say

" There is no evidence to support JP2 ever said that. if it is true he said something like that it would be on the Vatican website. Guess what, it isn’t on there!"
 
I think a respectful and direct way to handle this is to comment that you found the quote very surprising and hard to believe, cannot corroborate it on your own, and would appreciate a link or point out to a credible primary source.

That will almost certainly be followed by the internet equivalent of the sound of field crickets…
 
Was JP II not just encouraging us to make use of the sacrament of confession more often?

Without the proper context I can’t be sure, but it would fit in with rebuking the protestant believe that our sins can be forgiven without the need to gain absolution from the sacrament.
 
thanks peeps! but how do i handle his anti christ bible verses? i’m pretty sure my uncle is refering to the pope when he posted that.
 
Who don’t you go to the library and look up the LA Times and see what, if anything, the Pope actually said?
 
As the other posters have said, definitely let him know, in a respectful way, that John Paul never said that.

As for the antichrist quotes, I suppose I would have to see or have an idea what your uncle said; that might make it easier to know how to respond.

He posted this right after he was done posting the supposed quote from JP2

Your uncle may be correct, here’s the article from the LA Times. Even so I don’t see what the problem is, if we can ask God directly for forgiveness, why is the Sacrament of Reconciliation necessary. The Pope is right.
