Protestant View of Mariology

Now I can only speak from what I have heard and been around. I cannot speak for all of Protestantism. I was raised Baptist and I never heard Mary called anything other than Mary. They state that she was a virgin at the time Christ was born but do not hold to the PV. The only time she was every mentioned was during Christmas time. She was just Mary to them and nothing more. But see this view is coming from a view that although God blessed Mary to carry His Son on earth, she was simply just like any other woman.
From the Formula of Concord:
On account of this personal union and communion of the natures, Mary, the most blessed Virgin, bore not a mere man, but, as the angel [Gabriel] testifies, such a man as is truly the Son of the most high God, who showed His divine majesty even in His mother’s womb, inasmuch as He was born of a virgin, with her virginity inviolate. **Therefore she is truly the mother of God, and nevertheless remained a virgin. **

There can only be one who gave the literal, physical birth to Jesus Christ.

But beyond that, there has been many mothers…of the church.
If there was a literal, physical birth of Christ Jesus, and if at the Incarnation, He is fully man and fully God, and if the Blessed Virgin Mary is the one who gave birth to Christ Jesus, who was fully God and fully man from the moment of the Incarnation, then the Blessed Virgin Mary bore the Savior, fully God and fully man, and is therefore the God-bearer, the Holy Theotokos.

How do you pronounce the word blessed?
Do you just use the one syllable version, or the two syllable version like most Catholics that I’ve come in contact with?
So can you elaborate further how calling Mary bless-ed and blessed can cause one to miss the big picture?

Or this is just opinion?

Thanks, Jon!

This projection on the faith of Catholics is reflective of an English Reformer, who put out the spin that Catholics worship Mary.

To be honest, the preacher who is continuing this line of thought is willfully ignorant of the profound teachings of the Church as well as its great contributions to the foundation of Western Civilization.

Do you honestly believe, if you understand what happens at Mass, that we are so ignorant we worship Mary???

People need to take a time out and see if they are spewing such falsehoods and misrepresentations going back to the Englishman…Wycliff??? Wasn’t he the one that was changing and adding words to Sacred Scripture? I am not sure. England went nationalistic as well.

Martin Luther maintained his honor and devotion to the Blessed Virgin. There were reformers who went to the Orthodox to get them to break and go to Sola Scriptura and they refused.

Why do you want to spend time studying the bents and prejudices of some dissenters? Why not spend time instead focusing on the truth of Jesus Christ and seek a deeper relationship with him, then passing on such ideas. They wanted reform but it is so limited.

Christ did not pass out bibles. What is that saying…why??

I"ve been prayin’ to her!!!
what is interesting to meditate on is – do your prayer requests get answered quicker? by praying to mary and asking her to interceed for you, “vs” praying to the Father God in the name of Jesus?

now i do know people who have gone to mary retreaats-- or to apperations – who found that they now heard a voice in their mind that instructed them to pray to or rather thrugh mary and the other saints…

all though it would seem that we are talking about reverence to mary with the purpose of praying to her and through her… for the benefit of getting answered prayer.

isn’t that the point of this… justifying praying to mary and of course other saints that we revere ?

How do you answer the atheist when he tells you, “You have a prayer chain at your church? Why do you have that? Why can’t you just ask God directly in Jesus’ name? Do your requests get answered quicker by having a prayer chain?”

And scripture says … James 5:16 says…

16 Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective.

I’ll take the prayers of those in heaven, especially those of Jesus’ Mother. 👍

Hear, hear!! :clapping:

We do not know…we do not know if God will answer the prayer, we do not know how God will respond ot the prayer and when God will respond. We put our trust in the mercy and providence of God.

A lot of times…prayers are answered in ways we do not expect or know.

more quickly than what? since some prayers are answered not in ways I want, but in ways He wants, how could I measure?
by praying to mary and asking her to interceed for you, “vs” praying to the Father God in the name of Jesus?
It is not her “vs” Him. She’s in addition to. And not first.

ok.

God reminds me everywhere I go to pray to Him. Don’t need a special retreat. In the process, I thank Mary and Joseph for saying yes.Sometimes I ask Mary to talk to her Son regarding my prayer to Him, because, you know, she’s His mother. Shouldn’t we always listen to our mother?!!
all though it would seem that we are talking about reverence to mary with the purpose of praying to her and through her… for the benefit of getting answered prayer.
Although many do this, many do not. Again, I like thanking her.
[SIGN][/SIGN]isn’t that the point of this… justifying praying to mary and of course other saints that we revere ?
I don’t think so. There’s more to this thread than that…
well it’s easy to get led astray
Not me!

My prayers get answered when God answers them. 😉

That is one part of this thread. Mariology is a vast subject

[OUOTE]isn’t that the point of this… justifying praying to mary and of course other saints that we revere ?

The point of the thread is to learn how everyone views Mary in their faith and personal life. 😉

Indeed it is! We can be led astray by following false doctrine and beliefs. We must hold firm to the Church Christ established on earth and to the teachings the Church sets forth before us. We can simply pray and try our best to stay on the correct path to salvation in hopes that one day we will walk with our Lord. 👍

Thanks, Jon!

Well stated.

Mary brings us into a deeper, more profound faith and relation with Christ. True devotion to Mary leads to a most intimate relationship with Christ.

A priest said the strongest Catholics are Marian Catholics.

Mary is the greatest contemplative, and with her companionship, you enter into such deep reflections of Sacred Scripture in union with the Holy Spirit.

She is the world’s greatest missionary today. That is why people are speaking of apparitions, words, and different modes…and she is reaching out in a particular way to bring us to conversion to God as the world itself is in a very bad place right now.

Nice way of stating it.

I heard once that the Blessed Mother must have known the fate of her Son. She freely took on that task as the Mother of God. Imagine having a son, knowing that he will give his life for the sins of the world. If it were my son, I would make sure that EVERYONE knew exactly what he did for them so that his death would not be in vain. But that is just my humble human opinion. 🙂

“All generations will call me Blessed”
No capital “b” in blessed.

Luke 1:46-48

46 And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,

47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

48 For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.

No capital “b” in blessed.

Luke 1:48

or he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

…okay…breath…
Composure.
Um…there were no such things as upper and lower case letters in the Greek language.

B or b…doesn’t the fact still stand…we are all to call her (B)blessed?

She said her soul magnifies the Lord?

So at that moment, was she speaking like a prophetess?
