What do you all think about me participating as a groomsman in the wedding of a Protestant friend of mine?

Some have told me this may be considered a sin because it’s like I’m showing support for the other denomination.

Vinny, as long as your Protestant friend is not marrying a Catholic, it’s OK.

Protestant to Protestant marriages are perfectly valid.

You’re not supporting the denomination, you’re supporting your friend.

If it IS a case of a Protestant marrying a Catholic (unless there’s been a dispensation), get back to me. That WOULD make a difference.

Tantum ergo:
You’re not supporting the denomination, you’re supporting your friend…
I feel the same way. And I have every intention of going, and standing up for my friend in the ceremony.

He and his fiance are both practicing Protestants who are going through months and months of counseling. And since it is not a Catholic marrying a Protestant, or a non-Christian ceremony, I don’t see the harm.

Some feel otherwise, I’m afraid.

Those who do feel otherwise have a misplaced understanding of valid marriages and the interaction among people of different faiths. There is no problem being in the wedding of your protestant friend. My friend who is a seminarian at a Benedictine Abbey was allowed to stand in the wedding of a protestant friend as well.

Oi, vei!

We have more in common with Protestants than we have differences. Party away!

(It is quite hard to convert a person you have chosen to alienate).
