Protestantism produced the holocaust

Here is a paraphrased excerpt from The Cunning of History:

Dr. Berger maintains that the Catholics attempted to return a God to man relationship lost by the Jewish faith. But Protestantism violently rejected the Catholic attempt…The Protestant insistence that man is saved by faith alone separates man’s activity…from the realm of divinity with remorseless logic which Judaism sought but failed to attain. It was the land of the Reformation that became the land in which bureaucracy was first perfected in its most complete and objective form…and which produced the holocaust.

I read this from my text book last night and about spit my Ramin noodles on the screen. Incredible. It was written by a Richard Rubenstein.

This is ridiculous. While I have little respect for the protestant religion (yet I respect individual protestants) It is absurd to make the connection between protestantim and the holocaust. Really, Hitler was more into paganism and spiritualism than anything else. This, along with Nietchze’s idea of the “superman” is what lead Hitler to his cult of race and state worship.

Actually that is not true. Hitler was not into paganism or spiritualism.That has been claimed in a couple of books but it is bunk. It was Heinrich Himmler, the head of the SS who was into all that. Hitler was into Germanic history and lore but his main motivation was extreme nationalism. It is hard to place the roots of his anti-semitism because anti-semitism was rampant throughout Europe in the 1920’s and 1930’s. You are right about the incorrectness of blaming Protestantism for the holocaust though. That is bunk too.

Totally absurd.

Many cultural factors came together to produce the Jewish Holocaust, but blaming it on Protestants is silly. This is one man’s silly opinion.

*What does bureaucracy create that causes a holocaust? Hitler was a nut case surrounded by very good generals and scientist. He had the charisma they had muscle and the devil had the reigns. This is like blaming democracy for what we did to the indians. It’s people who commit evil acts, the blame belongs on Hitler and his personal decisions. *

Hillare Belloc also blamed Protestantism for the current state of Europe and Germany in particular (in The Great Heresies-which was written in 1938). He, at the time, thought (hoped intently, I believe) protestatism was completely dead doctrinally and that there would soon be a great reaction to it which he hoped would come from the Church. Sadly, I don’t have the book in front of me and I’ve already forgotten how he came to his conclusions.
