Protestants, a new twist on Mother Mary and the rosary

Mary was (and is) great and we love her! And I think that we get that Catholics have their reasons for loving Mary second to God based on the first couple chapters of Luke and some “Mother of Jesus” passages in John. But I still am not, nor do I think I could be convinced to pray the rosary.
That’s to bad, you don’t know what your missing. You should try it and see what happens. But give it a fair trial. God Bless, Memaw

What does this have to do with what I’m asking?

Besides, we all do believe Mary is blessed. Also, the peacemakers, those who weep, the ones who are cursed, etc.

But yes, Mary will forever be known as blessed, because she was.
IS! 😉 And we would use a “B” for Blessed.

Every time we call Mary, “Blessed”, we are fulfilling scripture, doing what the Bible said we should be doing.
For sure, but the very basic issue is Protestants don’t believe St Mary or any other saint can help them to know love & serve God because the saints have died and passed over the veil to the spirit world. As a result they can’t help us any more, correct me Protestant brothers in Christ, if I’m wrong.

Part right, part wrong.

They don’t ACTIVELY help us know god, but through their example can lead us TO GOD

We confess belief in the communion of Saints… We believe these passed over saints ARE praying for us…if we specifically ask for it or not. Through these prayers they DO help us… but it is still up to god to decide IF and HOW those prayers will be answered.

Heck, If I need a prayer said for me I am sure the saints know about it well before, I as a human being recognize it… and are already praying for me.

There are many Protestants who believe that the Blessed Mother Mary and other Saints can help us where they LIVE NOW. 👍
Also, there may be some rogue Protestants who come from a denomination that teaches otherwise and still they believe in the communion of saints.😉

Says you.

Speaking of repetition, maybe to us, once would be enough.

Let’s look at the Bible with regards to repetition.

The Bible repeats, constantly. In Psalm 136, the phrase “His steadfast love endures forever” is repeated…26 times! Now, I know you say with one time, it’s enough, but the Bible has examples where it seems to show otherwise.

In Matthew, 26:39-44, Jesus prays the same prayer, 3 times in succession.

Revelations 4:8, the Heavenly creatures sing, “Holy, Holy, Holy” 24/7, day in, day out, non-stop throughout eternity.

Consider that what may be acceptable for you may not be acceptable for God.

The Bible also talks of persistance, and how it can be a good thing.

Recall the widow that, because of persistance, gets her way. This is help up as an example for us to use in prayer and another example of the friend who, due to his persistance, gets another friend out of bed to tend to his needs.
That still doesn’t answer my question, because I’m legitimately curious.

After confession; for penance does a Priest often say to say “X” number of hail Mary’s?

Just curious, where did you get that from? Personally I don’t recall a Priest giving me that for penance. Not saying it doesn’t happen but I’m curious where you heard this. The prayers that are given and number of them (if that’s the case) for penance are generally given based on their nature relative to the sin(s) confessed. “Our Father…” for example may be given based on the petitions. Such as “forgive us our trespasses”. But I can only say this from my own experience as I don’t know what every Priest does but I know they are being guided by the Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of Reconciliation and giving absolution.

Not sure if that helps or not?! 🤷

You can also pray the scriputral rosary over at Rosary Arrmy if you like the Bible verse for each bead. I have the audio files of these too and often pray along while I’m walking - the scripture helps me keeped focused on the mystery.

They are linked on the sidebar at rosaryarmy.newevangelizers.com/prayers/
Each mystery is on a different page, with the scripture verses listed, and you can download the audio files there, too.
Excellent! Thank you!

I know protestants don’t understand why we pray the rosary. Or for anyone who does not understand why, let me help explain. Then let me know what you think.

I won’t go through every single prayer of the rosary but here is an idea of how and why.

We have mysteries.

We will start with the joyful mysteries.

First we say the Our Father, then ten Hail Mary’s. But there is a method to our madness:D

The first joyful mystery is the Annunciation, Which is Mary saying yes to God.
Now through these ten Hail Mary’s and one Our Father we think of how we are called to surrender our heart to God and do his will. You keep thinking of that.

Next the Visitation, When she visits her cousin Elizabeth. It humility. Can you imagine the Mother or GOD serving her cousin, We think how we need to help others. humble oneself.

Next is the Birth of Jesus. The son of GOD, born in a stable. It teaches us to detach oneself from material things in this world.

Next the Presentation, when Mary submits here child to the Law of Moses. It teaches us to be obedient to the laws. We must obey them today also.

Next Finding Jesus in the temple. Jesus in the temple, It teaches us knowledge does not come from just a book, it is a true Gift from God, Remember the teachers were teaching Jesus, next thing you see HE a CHILD was teaching them.

That’s pretty much it few more prayers and it over. But your mind is really concentrating on these things.

Will show another mystery later.

There are 4.

You rotate days.

But what you do is put yourself there, and try to live it out all day. So far, what do you think?

Will show more later.
The rosary…been there, done that. If it helps you, though, go ahead on!🙂

I agree with Convert 2013. The penance given is based upon the nature of the sin being confessed. My priest will often ask me to meditate upon a Psalm or other passage of Scripture. Sometimes its just an “Our father” and yes, sometimes its “three Hail Marys”. I have been given the penance of praying the entire rosary in front of my favorite image of Mary after confessing lustful thoughts. Some priests may not put as much thought into the penance they assign as does my priest and a lazy priest may assign a particular prayer (three Hail Marys, for instance) as a standard for everyone. It has no affect on the validity of the sacrament.

I have a feeling that there is more behind your question than is being asked and so I will take a chance in presuming that your question has to do with repetition.

I think one of the difficulties lies in the fact that Catholicism has many forms of prayer; Prayers of petition, Prayers of thanksgiving; Meditation (rosary); contemplative prayer, mystical prayer and communal prayer (the Mass). And then, there is just talking with God in our own words. This last form of prayer is the one with which most non-Catholic Christians are familiar and most are very unfamiliar with any other form.

To repeat the “Hail Mary” is a form of meditation. If one is sincere, they will dwell on the meaning of those words and make them their own. Most spouses never tire of hearing the words “I love you” from the other spouse, no matter how many times they are repeated. That is really all we are doing.

Priests suggest many different prayers as PART of
a penance.
For instance I was grossly spending too much on coffee. Starbucks.
The priest suggested no more Starbucks, make coffee
at home, figure the money saved for one month and
give it to charity and say three Hail Mary’s and one
Our Father.

Another penance for something the priest
asked for only one Come Holy Spirit prayer.

How they decide these things I don’t know.

It’s worth at least that many Hail Mary’s for going to Starbucks. Eeew!!

I am fine with the mysteries except for the “Queen of Heaven” one. But can’t I meditate on these mysteries without having to drone out prayers to Mary?

Something to add to the twist;

When St.JPII gave us the Luminous mysteries, combined with the other mysteries of the Rosary, they are all found to fulfill the Law and the Prophets mystically.

The Hail Mary prayer called the Angelus in ancient times is taken from scripture in Luke’s Gospel from both revealed mysteries of the Annunciation and the Visitation.

The first part of the Hail Mary prayer addresses the blessed Virgin Mary with the words revealed from Heaven and the Holy Spirit not man.

The second part of the Hail Mary responds to heavens revelation of the blessed Virgin Mary. The dialogue between heaven and earth begins the mysteries of the Rosary in each Hail Mary.

To pray the rosary is to pray the scriptures.

Just a thought

You can, and you can pray another prayer if you want to. Some people, especially Protestants and new converts or inquireres who are not comfortable honoring Mary, pray only the first half of the Hail Mary, saying only the first half and omitting the part where we ask her to pray for us, while others substitute the Jesus Prayer - “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, the sinner.” but the rosary as we know it begun as a Marian devotion, which is why the main prayers are the Hail Mary.

Here is one way that some Lutherans pray the rosary with regular rosary beads: giftsofaith.com/Files/lutheranrosary.pdf
There is also a different “Lutheran rosary” that was developed a few years ago and uses different prayers and a different arrangement of beads (5 or 7 sets with 6 beads each), but I am not very familiar with it.

As far as the Coronation goes, one thing to remember about the tiitle “Queen of Heaven” is that Jews considered the queen to be the mother of the king, so it is accurate in one way, even if you are not comfortable with the royal imagery in heaven applying to Mary.

I am fine with the mysteries except for the “Queen of Heaven” one. But can’t I meditate on these mysteries without having to drone out prayers to Mary?
Sure. Or you can change the prayer as well to
the Our Father our "Lord Jesus Christ have mercy
on us and the whole world. ".

Whatever helps the meditation.
We just believe God gives special graces of
understanding to those who ask His Mother’s
intercession.

And we call her the Queen of Heaven because she
is the mother of the King and the Queen of all the
human saints in Heaven. You see Jesus is not a saint- He’s God.
Lol.
