Protestants and ABC

I have a question regarding protestants and ABC (Artifical Birth Control)

Most, if not, all protestant churches teach that using artificial contraception of almost ALL kinds is perfectly acceptable, and usually encouraged by some denoms.

Now, knowing that use of ABC in any circumstance is a grave, if not MORTAL offense, how can practicing ABC protestants go to heaven? I know some will say it’s not a mortal sin because they are not aware of the gravity of their sin, but it’s still BAD. Think: abortion is ALWAYS wrong, no matter what. But some people don’t think it is, like some christians who support the pro-abortion movement. Are these christians okay? Or take pre-marital sex. Not all christians think this is wrong and they never repent or feel sorry for it.

It would seem that if ABC is a grave perversion of the marital act, and a horrific sin, then what of protestants who practice? What of churches who help young married couples get ABC? What of pastors who advise couples in their pre-marital counselling what kind of ABC to use?

Is this a hinderance to their salvation or something that can be hammered out in purgatory?

My inclination is that it would not meet the full knowledge criteria for it being a mortal sin in most (but probably not all) cases. This would likely make it a venial sin, but it depends on the individual case and possibly why they’re using contraception. With pre-marital sex it would still be a mortal sin in most cases as they know it’s wrong, and ones that still fornicate anyway would know they’re ignoring Christian teachings, though wouldn’t be if they’d never been taught it were wrong.

You are thinking from a Catholic point of view. To the Catholic Church, using ABC is a sin, as you said, to many Protestant Churches it is not. Its all a matter of interpretation of Scripture. Remember, to a Protestant, what the Catholic Church thinks is irrelevant. Many Protestant Churches think the Catholic Church is in grave error on a number of things.

It is for this reason that I and my family are leaving protestantism and joining the Catholic Church. The abortifacient mechanism of hormonal birth control is well documented, and the protestant churches are STILL allowing and even encouraging its use. THIS, in my mind, is proof that the deposit of the Holy Spirit is NOT with these ‘churches’.

Would the Church of our Lord allow children, made in the image of God, to be killed by the millions every year? The answer is a resounding NO.

Regarding the salvation of those who are within the protestant churches, only the Lord can say who is truly saved… but I for one would not want to be in the shoes of one is guilty of the blood of the innocent.

Catholic teaching on marriage and sex is also the main reason I converted four years ago. OK, reverted. I can’t tell you how gross I felt whenever a pastor of one of those churches would bring up his vasectomy in front of people. Sort of shocks a person out of “feeling the spirit move.” I heard this personally from three different pastors. Last year I even saw two people joking about it on the cable channel TBN.

If the protestants get their hands on Christopher West’s work on the Theology of the Body, their eyes will be opened. Theology of the Body is filled with hundreds of scriptures, from just about every book of the Bible on God’s plan for sex and marriage. It is very protestant-friendly, in that respect. Reading Theology of the Body addresses so much of Catholic teaching on everything, not just marriage.

Actually I’ve been a hardcore evangelical protestant longer than I have been Catholc. WAY longer. I know what they say, but the thing is, either something is a sin or it’s not. If ABC is as bad as fornication to catholics, (or abortion as I’ve seen some on here say), then I would think they are all living in very grave sin.

It is always an evil act, but not everyone is always culpable. I think the truth of intrinsically evil acts is lost on much of the population.

In any event, it is always from the truth that the dignity of conscience derives. In the case of the correct conscience, it is a question of the *objective truth *received by man; in the case of the erroneous conscience, it is a question of what man, mistakenly, *subjectively *considers to be true. It is never acceptable to confuse a “subjective” error about moral good with the “objective” truth rationally proposed to man in virtue of his end, or to make the moral value of an act performed with a true and correct conscience equivalent to the moral value of an act performed by following the judgment of an erroneous conscience.108 It is possible that the evil done as the result of invincible ignorance or a non-culpable error of judgment may not be imputable to the agent; but even in this case it does not cease to be an evil, a disorder in relation to the truth about the good…
