I have a hard time understanding how Protestants do not believe that remarriage, while the other spouse is alive, is not adultry. The bible clearly says that it is.
Am I right in saying that Protestants believe that adultry only happens when a married spouse “cheats” on his/her spouse?
Protestants please explain your definition of adultry and back it up with scripture.

alot of protestants have a problem when it comes to vows & sex - you may be barking up the wrong tree

I was talking to a protestant at work who is always reading the bible. I was feeling him out so that I could talk to him about the Catholic Church. He said he goes to bible study every week and to his church on Sundays.
Found out that he has been married 3 times and has children by all of his wives. My first thought was how could this man that reads the bible every day not see that he is living in adultry. Or is it that he knows it is adultry but he believes in once saved always saved and so this sin doesn’t matter?
I don’t know if I should ask him what he believes or just let it go.

Jewish Attitude Toward Divorce
Judaism recognized the concept of “no-fault” divorce thousands of years ago. Judaism has always accepted divorce as a fact of life, albeit an unfortunate one. Judaism generally maintains that it is better for a couple to divorce than to remain together in a state of constant bitterness and strife.

Under Jewish law, a man can divorce a woman for any reason or no reason. The Talmud specifically says that a man can divorce a woman because she spoiled his dinner or simply because he finds another woman more attractive, and the woman’s consent to the divorce is not required. In fact, Jewish law requires divorce in some circumstances: when the wife commits a sexual transgression, a man must divorce her, even if he is inclined to forgive her.

Excellent point. Thanks. Protestants don’t take marriage lightly; only the ones who are too selfish to care what scripture says do. Also, Jesus did say that, and it’s important to note He was referencing a MAN’S motive for leaving his wife. She may be an adulteress, but Jesus also says that if we confess our sins He is faithfult to forgive us and purify us from all unrighteousness. I know that may not matter at all to you guys who started this thread since it is just another way to speak about the wicked ways of us protestants, but the majority of us do take the words of Christ seriously when He speaks about marriage. By the way, do you think we protestants do anything right?

again another thread that attempts to characterize the teaching and practice of thousands of denominations by an innaccurate and anachronistic label. If you want to make a statement about a group, please correctly identify the group and provide the source and authority for your allegation. there are as many different teachings on marriage and divorce among non-Catholic Christians as there are denominations or non-denominational preachers.

also just because an individual, whether Catholic, Lutheran, Mormon, Jewish or claiming any other religious affiliation, acts against the moral teaching of his own leaders, does not equate to “his group teaches and advocates this”. So evidence of “this Catholic did that, and this Baptist I know did this” cannot be used to condemn that religion to which that individual adheres.

Why not begin this thread with:
what is your denomination, and what does it teach about marriage and divorce, and what are your scriptural and other sources for the teaching?

why begin in an accusatory tone against people you don’t even know, based on behavior of a couple of people you do know? how does that aid rational discussion?

What is that supposed to mean? Are you continuing the idea of how messed up you see protestants to be? Am I not folloing you here?

another non sequiter and example of illogic
this country allows/promotes/legalizes this moral wrong
many Protestants reside in this country
therefore Protestants advocate/preach/allow this moral wrong

Thank you; very well said. Using dosdog’s logic, I could bash France for it’s policies on certain things since that country has, over time, been overwhelmingly considered catholic, but that would be extremely unfair. I could also say that since mondo films were started in Italy that it has some problems even though the seat of the rcc is there. It’s just not fair to lump everyone together, regardless of church or religion, when one of those “members” does something stupid.

I think this thread was intended to cause a stir…and I guess that by my replying to it, I bit the bait 😃

Anyway, the claim made in this thread is just as ridiculous and offensive as the threads non-Catholics start that imply Catholics worship Mary, etc. I’m not really that offended, because I know that none of these bogus claims are true, but I can certainly see where other’s will most likely be offended by this thread.

But again, here I am posting on it…hook, line and sinker:)

Does a statistic you bring up compare in any way to the millions of dollars the rcc has had to spend in pay-outs to families of children sexually molested over the years? Does it compare to the likes of men like Bernard Law who allowed it to go on? You see, all of those facts, protestant and catholic related, are tragic. But do we protestants think all priests are pedophiles? Nope. I can’t, however, say the same for you and your opinion of protestants. There is obviously no reason to continue this when you will continue to insist: catholic=good-----protestant=bad.

will not even dignify this by going to the website
there is absolutely no way anyone can possibly have knowledge of the private lives of all Protestant ministers. ludicrous inflammatory baseless claim.

you could say, 30% of the tiny sample of Protestant ministers from these few denominations sampled in this flawed study . . . reported thus and so, but it still would not justify a global statement like this

I’m just glad that none of this stuff happens in the Catholic church! 😉

CONCLUSION

Indeed, it shows that family members are the most likely to sexually molest a child. It also shows that the incidence of the sexual abuse of a minor is slightly higher among the Protestant clergy than among the Catholic clergy, and that it is significantly higher among public school teachers than among ministers and priests
