A lot of Protestants have objections, based on their understanding of Jesus’ teachings, about repetitious prayers.
Also, a lot of Protestants have objections to using material objects (beads, statues, pictures, holy water, etc.), because they fear that the focus is on these objects rather than on Christ.
Interestingly, many of these same Protestants will sing a praise and worship chorus dozens of times during a worship service. My husband and I counted the repetitions once in a P and W chorus at our old Protestant church–the same chorus was repeated 25 times.
Classical music lovers do the SAME THING–have you ever sung Handel’s Messiah. “For unto us a Child is born, unto us, a Son is given, unto us, a Child is born”–repeat several dozen times until song ends!
Also, many of the charismatic Protestants will pray in tongues and have no idea what they are praying. For all they know, they could be reciting the same prayer over and over again!
Also interestingly, many of these same Protestants will gladly wear a WWJD bracelet, or a necklace with a Sign of the Fish, or some other piece of apparel giving witness to their faith. And that’s the difference–these Protestants are using the material objects as witnessing tools, not prayer aids. But they will use a Prayer Journal.
I am waiting for chaplets to make a comeback in Protestantism in the “alternative” or the “emergent” movements. All it will take is for a solid, respected teacher like Rick Warren or Dr. James Dobson or Beth Moore to voice approval, or even better, for a Christian rock band star to voice approval, and we’ll see chaplets in Protestant catalogs. Did all of you know that there are Ecumenical Rosaries prayed by some Protestants? That’s how my husband first got interested in the Rosary, so don’t knock it!
(Note: Rick Warren is in a little doo doo at the moment because of his wishy-washiness about Proposition 8.)
