Protestants and the Crucifix

I was buying a crucifix today, to wear, and realized that I’d never known a Protestant to do the same. I know all the rhetoric about “we serve a risen Savior, not a dead one.” That’s not what I’m looking for.

All the while I was a Protestant, I never had a problem with the crucifix; I did my share of paintings/drawings of it when I still considered myself an artist. But it never crossed my mind to wear or hang one.

So, my question is, are there any Protestants here that wear a crucifix? Hang one in your home? Just curious.

God bless.

I am Episcopalian…do I qualify to answer?

Anyway, I wear a crucifix, my rosary has a crucifix on it, however, do not have any in my home.

My husband wears a rather large crucifix which belonged to his father who never went to church…go figure?

To me, a crucifix is “more real”…it’s my visual of Christ suffering which will make anyone humble IMO…that’s why I wear one.

I have seen Protestants wear a crucifix, but I suspect they do it more as a fashion statement than a display of faith.

Now really, that’s hardly fair. You might be able to say that with something like the medal of a Saint, but not with a crucifix. Not as a generalization, anyway.

I think that it depends on the denominations. Most Baptists, for example, wouldn’t wear a crucifix. I always liked the crucifix when I was Protestant, even when I was Independent Baptist, but I can’t say that I ever wore one.

Well I am Baptist - Southern Baptist at that - and I have no problem with wearing and displaying a crucifix. I have a bracelet with a crucifix charm on it that I love to wear (not as a fashion statement). I love to share my faith in Christ with others and I am not ashamed of wearing or displaying a crucifix. Also, when I get some money I have had my eye on a crucifix wall statue that I really want for my house! I have never heard of Protestants who have problems with wearing or displaying a crucifix - why would a Christian have a problem with that?

As a former southern baptist, I would not wear a crucifix.
It was not taught, or talked about. The abstinence of the crucifix was to the extent that I never even heard anything bad about it. Later when I got involved in more of the fundmental views, I heard the negative comments but not in every fundamental circle.

This is the problem of the ununited church, different views, different man made beliefs. We are all taught our faith, the bible christians just deny it.

That is wonderful that you wear a crucifix and have no problem with others wearing one. I, myself, have often scratched my head over the animosity that some have about crucifixes. It is a symbol of our faith. I have nothing against bare crosses, so I don’t understand why anyone would dislike an image of Jesus on the cross. Yet, twice, I have had to defend my faith from people who adamently assured me that Catholics did not believe that Jesus rose from the dead. When I tried to convince them of their mistake, I was just smugly told that “Catholics still have Jesus on the cross, therefore they don’t believe that he rose again.” :banghead:

Lol! Don’t you just love that logic? 😃

Since they prefer an empty cross, does that mean they believe Jesus didn’t die for our sins?
Of course they don’t, and I don’t know a Catholic who would say such a thing. Geeesh! Some people are beyond reason. Just gotta pray for them.

I recently had a co-worker say something very similar to me. I just reversed it back on them and said “So, since Baptists don’t have Jesus on the cross, that must mean you don’t believe that he died for your sins”.

When he started to argue that statement he suddenly stopped and realized that he was arguing against himself lol. Then he was ready to actually understand my point of view on the subject.

edit - d’oh, just noticed your post Elzee where you said pretty much the same thing 🙂

You’ve a time limit on post editing. If it’s within the proper time frame (which is something like 5 minutes; not long, anyway), then the “Edit” button will be right next to the “Quote” button on your post.

God bless.

Amanda, can I 😉 adopt you??
I am Methodist, & yes, I have a crucifix in my house.
I don’t wear one, but then, I’m not really a jewelry person.

One of my friends is a Baptist. She has a crucifix in her room. When I pointed this out, she jokingly called it a “Jesus Cross”…you know, so as not to sound too Catholic or anything.

I’ve also seen, in her parent’s apt, where she lives, a profile of Jesus’ face on the beam, or something, between the dining room & living room. Facing Jesus & a little lower, is a profile of Mary.

ALSO, at their church (which I have been to three times, to make sure that my friend, who is kind of lazy in this regard, WENT to church), in the bathroom, I believe, is a picure of The Sacred Heart of Jesus. I’m not sure if they realise that it’s a picture of The Sacred Heart or just have Jesus iconary in the bathroom because it IS a church…

I will have to check with my husband on that, maybe you can adopt us both!😉
Deb1, I have never heard of anyone who believes that Catholics still hold Jesus on the cross or that it is wrong to wear a crucifix rather than an empty cross. I am sorry that was said to you, as it is not what is taught in the Baptist church.

I was just told by a group of Baptists that Catholics do not believe in the resurrection because they depict Christ on the cross! I was speechless (only for a second), and dumbfounded. Do you think that different baptist churches may teach their members different things?

I have a couple of crucifixes and a couple of crosses.

I don’t currently wear either, although I was wearing a cross made of three nails for a while.

Peace
