Ok hear is my question. Catholics have books that have what we call a NIHIL OBSTAT and it is there so Catholics know there is no docternal errors contained within that book. We even came up with what books should be contained in the bible infailably

What I would like to know is if the president came up with a plan for Christians to come up with what books are authentic with no docternal errors that are outside the bible. Could they do it?

Lets take all the Billy Graham and Joel Osteen books and determine what is authentic. After all we had a church that did that nearly 1700 years ago with the books of the bible. So could we do that today?

If not how come?
we where unified enough to do it then
someone had athourity to do it then

so my challenge to protestants is do it now and if you cant how did you do it then?

I will let the last part go but ok

I am not sure what this means.
But lets run with it:D
Depends if it was President Bush, a good United Methodist or President elect Obama, a liberal loving United Church of Christ…or he was…I dunno now

I have never read a Billy Graham book.
Joel Osteen…well of course I have.

Actually it appears we DID do that. Very few Protestants agree with the Catholic canon so…we did it and never knew we did it;)
Most Protestants do not believe that Joel Osteen and Billy Graham are inspired…not even in Houston 😃

lol

for the sake of argument bare with me

It was a Roman Emporor that got bishops together to help canonize the bible

but that does beg a question does your church have bishops?
I have never read a Billy Graham book.
Joel Osteen…well of course I have.
Granted he is not inspired could his books have docternal errors?

But taking books out is not the same as deciding what books belong.

The early Church decided infalibly what books should be in the bible, could the modern Christian Church today (all true believers) do the same if it was never done in the first place?

And if the Chruch decided 1700 hundred years ago what was inspired why cant the Church today say what books outside the bible dont and do have docternal errors?

No. There is no authority in Protestantism.

Every one of these conflicting theologies is dogma to SOMEBODY and no one under the Protestant umbrella has any power to anathematize them.

As an historical example, dig up Billy Graham’s rejection of Fundamentalism, a case which provides insights into why Protestants simply cannot police doctrine with any success.

Indeed, William F. Buckley Jr was far more successful at writing the John Birchers out of modern conservatism than Protestants have had anathematizing anyone who claims to be Christian, even those which are non-Trinitarian and thus subscribe to the most ancient of heresies.

Exactly what I’m geting at the church had authority 1700 years ago what happened?

They came up with different canons is what happened. Christian bodies have different canons. Thats a fact.
The Assyrian Church of the East, whom John Paul met with in the 90’s, has a 22 book NT. They are Christians, and they have a different canon.
Some of the Oriental Orthodox churches have a larger canon. I know one of the Ethopian ones do for sure.
What I am saying is that Christians disagree about the canon. I think it is a matter of recognizing what is inspired and obviously different Christians came up with different canons.
It occured when the reformers placed the Deuterocanonical books into a seperate section and whether one agrees with their decision they felt the authority to do so.
I think this notion of all Christians having to agree on a canon is futile because as best as I can tell…we NEVER have:shrug:
It is TRUE that a majority of Christians hold a certain canon but not all of them. Perhaps if someone is Sola Scriptura it poses a dilemma but it sure does not for me.

PS. Yes we have bishops, sorry about that, you asked a question 😃

I respect your opinion but I fell that for the church to be one it was necessary for her to decide what belongs and what does not

Darn forget I asked

They rejected that authority and replaced it with the manmade authority of the modern heresiarchs.

Looks like they didn’t read St Paul closely enough.
