A priest has no right to forgive sin. For he was not the one that died on the cross for our sins. He is human, therefore imperfect and sinful, just as anyone else.
I am curious what you think the verse means:

Matt 9:7-8
8 When the crowds saw it, they were afraid, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to men.

I am also curious why you do not give glory to God because He has done this.

All rights (authority) comes from God. It is God alone that can authorize people to do anything.

John 20:22-23
22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

It is Jesus, by the power of the HS, that enables men to forgive sins.
The only one who can forgive sins is the Lord Jesus Christ for he is the only sinless and perfect one.
He chooses to work through people.
Confessing to a priest is just a catholic belief to create fear or manipulation to keep the followers in the control of the catholic church. By going to a priest and confessing your sins, it creates this imagery or picture that a priest is more holy than you and has power from God that you dont, making you do what he tells you or feel the need to go to him for something instead of Christ. It is all part of the system of catholicism to keep you under them.
I don’t know what form of anti-Catholicism you have been indoctrinated in, but why are you bringing it in here? This forum is for Catholic Answers. CAF is not a venue for you to promote your warped and erroneous perceptions of our faith.
Ask Jesus into your heart and for forgiveness and you will be saved.
“And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Acts 2:21
This is what happens in Confession. 👍
It is blasphemy to say you can forgive sins for you are not God.
“Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only?” Mark 2:7
I am curious why you are siding with those who call Jesus a blasphemer, and why you deny what scripture clearly states about men having the power to forgive sins.

I also wonder how you pray the Lord’s prayer with a clear conscience.

You do not have to be baptized to be a christian, there is no truth in that. That is a catholic teaching.
This is Catholic Teaching because this is what the Apostles taught. We are born again by water and Spirit in baptism. It might be better for you to bring your misunderstandings on that to the baptism thread. Just search for threads with the word Baptism and you will find it. If you have trouble, let me know, and I can post a link. It is off topic here.
By asking Jesus to forgive you of your sins (not a priest) and asking Jesus to come into your heart, you are born again and saved. That is how you become a christian, by doing what the bible says, not by doing what a teaching from a religion says.

For God does not want religion, He wants relationship.
What you have stated here is not consistent with what the Apostles believed and taught. Have you ever looked at what the NT says about religion?

22

Protestants, can a Catholic Priest forgive sins?
No.

First of all, the Bible tells us in the book of Hebrews that Jesus Christ has done away with the need for priests.

Second, the Bible never says that the church or it’s ministers can forgive sins, only that they can proclaim salvation and the forgiveness of sins through Christ.

You gotta be kidding me…it really is sad to interpret the bible the way you want and not the way Jesus wanted. What do you say to this Scripture passage when Jesus
breathed on the Apostles and told them “what sins you forgive are forgiven them, what sin you retain is retained”. Is that not SOOOOOO clearly given a teaching to the Apostles to forgive sin? How do you interpret this?

I say the same thing to myself every time I read your posts.

Same answer I gave last time.

What Jesus has done away with is the Levitical priesthood. Jesus however has fulfilled the priesthood of Melchizedek.

Also, what do you think does John 20:21-23 mean?

I looked at your previous posts in this thread and there doesn’t seem to be any that answers this question from OneTrueCathApos.

So piggy backing on his post, what do you think John 20:21-23 mean?

Exactly. And, as such, we have no more need for priests.
Ahh but yes we do. At the last supper, he made an offering and sacrifice (This is my body which will be given up for you… my blood). Sacrifificing offerings is what priests do. That is the whole point of priesthood. Jesus commanded them to do this in His memory. To do this in his memory you need to have a priest.

Same answer I gave before.

You mean no answer 😃 Dodging will get you nowhere.

I didn’t dodge the question. I answered it. It isn’t my fault that you’re too lazy and too disrepectful to read my posts before you respond to them.
That you can’t even provide post number means there isn’t one.😃

Actually, I do have an answer and I gave it in post #844.
Maaan, that is a piddly little post that does not answer what John 20:21-23 is all about. There was not an iota of explanation about John 20:21-23 in that post!

Perhaps it will help you to formulate a reply if you have the verses right before your eyes so here it is.

21 (Jesus) said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the holy Spirit. 23 Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.”

And yes, what is being asked of you is an exegesis of this passage.

Before I go on, should I waste my time hoping that you’re going to stop being snotty?

I am not being snotty. If you are going to say you explained John 20:21-23 then please EXPLAIN. Please tell me where in that post is your explanation of John 20:21-23?

Here is the passage again
21 (Jesus) said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the holy Spirit. 23 Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.”

In the meantime it is almost 12 midnight and I am off to bed. Goodnight.🙂
