Bill asked a good question. The situation and occurences actually happen. Look at all the different teachings, some have been posted on this board. I bet every responder could have added at the end of their answer, “I was guided by the Holy Spirit”.

I’ve talked to many non-Catholics about different subjects. Each time they give me their version of something I would tell them that yesterday Robert told me something different. The first person would almost always reply that he was guided by the Holy Spirit. Funny thing is that Robert told me HE was guided by the Holy Spirit also yet the “Holy Spirit” told them different things. Conclusion; almost everybody says they are guided by the Holy Spirit but they rarely agree on anything.

So, the problem is, whom do we believe if everybody says they are guided by the Holy Spirit yet have different beliefs?

By the way. I have never had anyone tell me that they were NOT guided by the Holy Spirit.
John Calvin, John Knox,John Smyth,JOhn & Chas Wesley,Joseph Smith,Chas Russell,Benny Hinn,Leroy Jenkins,Don Stewart, Billy Bob all lead by the Holy Spirit.

Then how do you know when the Pope is infallible?
Fist you assume wrongly that an fallible man can ever be infallible. Only the Creator God of the Bible is perfect in all that He does so He is the only One who is infallible. If what the Pope ever speaks as you say excathedra then it will agree with Bible. The Bible is measure determining the correctness of what the Pope says.

That could be said about any Christian.

Hi Dokimas. Glancing over the posts that have been made here today, I see that you’re involved in several conversations on this same thread. So it may possibly be better to move the papal-infallibility discussion to a new thread. But, for the time being, I’ll keep it here and just try to keep it seperate from the other (and rather odd, from the looks of some of them) conversations in this thread.

You asked:

and:

Before addressing your second question, let me ask you a variation of your first question: Was St. Paul always infallible?

Only Jesus is and was infallible. Paul wrote letters that didn’t make it into the cannon of Scriptures. If the Holy Spirit chooses what’s in cannon, then maybe not all he wrote was 100% accurate or infallible.

I was reading in Act 10 this morning (I reading through Acts before work). I noticed that Cornelius bowed to Peter and wanted to worship him. Peter didn’t want him to bow before him nor worship him. As I’m reading this discussion, I remembered this passage. Can you read between the lines here and get my meaning? I’m trying not to be direct. I’m not here to offend.

By the way. I have never had anyone tell me that they were NOT guided by the Holy Spirit.
I can’t say I know if or when the Holy Spirit is guiding me. I can only hope He can use this clay vessel, so often in need of repair.

DoKimas, I see you have a lot of questions about the Cathloic Church and are confused about a lot of Cathloic teaching, so just ask one question at a time and we can stay on one thread and may be you will learn a little about the Church learning does not hurt any one,I see in one of your post you had some question about Peter being a pope,Cathloic calling priests father and I think two on Mary. Its a good time to learn what Cathloic teach and not what some one thinks they teach

What do you think of these Bible verse, Mt.16:18-19,Mt18:17-18,1Tim3:15

Mt 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

‘Peter’ in the Greek means a stone or rock. The word the Holy Spirit used in the phrase, ‘upon this rock’ for rock is petra which is much bigger, maybe even a cliff or ledge. Jesus wouldn’t build a church on a stone but on a ledge.

I believe the legde upon which Jesus has built his church is found in Mat 16:16, and that is the words Peter said of Jesus, “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” This is the Truth upon which the Church has been built. Take that truth away and there is no church.

Mt 16:19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

I’m not real sure but it says nothing about Peter passing the keys on to someone else.

Mt 18:17 And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell [it] unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.

The Greek word for church is ekklesia which means ‘called out ones; a gathering of people (in the case of Christians) to worship God’. I think one must be very careful to read anything more into the word church.

Mt 18:18 Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

I’m not sure but I’d be real careful how I would use this verse.

1Ti 3:15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

Great verse!!! The church (all Christians make up God’s Church) is so important. We need each other.

The Pope is infalliable when it comes to faith & morals. No one ever said he was infalliable in all he says.

Please can you site book, chapter & verse that states that the Bible is the only thing we have to determine what is correct in truth. I could have sworn that the Church was the pillar & bulwark of truth…

So you believe (as I do) that St. Paul was not always infallible. So when you really come down to it, what point have you made about Papal Infallibility? Think about it: St. Paul wasn’t always infallible in matters of faith and morals, and the Popes aren’t always infallible in matter of faith and morals. Sounds very reasonable to me.

I’m not usually as direct or blunt as I am with the following questions, but in light of your questions and what seems to be the reasons behind your questions I felt I had to be blunt. I don’t mean to offend.

Who told Catholics that the Virgin Mary was sinless or immaculately conceived? Please show references.

Or who told Cathlolics Peter was the first Pope? Again references please. Did you know Peter was married. If he is your example, why don’t popes or other priests get married? Do you know priests and other church leader in the Bible usually were married?

Who told Catholics that Jesus didn’t have brothers and sisters (Mary and Joseph’s children) because the Bible says He did have sibblings? References please.

Who told Catholics to call their priests ‘father’ when the Bible says not to call anyone father because there is one Father, our Heavenly Father? References please.

I guess I’d rather have a contradictory belief form other Christians that I can see some evidence for in the Bible than believe things that are different from the direct teachings of the Bible.

Very well said. I have not seen so many protestants jump on a thread like this one

John Calvin, John Knox,John Smyth,JOhn & Chas Wesley,Joseph Smith,Chas Russell,Benny Hinn,Leroy Jenkins,Don Stewart, Billy Bob all lead by the Holy Spirit.
Were they really led by the Holy Spirit. Why would the Holy Spirit lead someone to teach something different than what the Word of God says.

-If Mary were not sinless, she couldn’t be worthy to become the new Ark of the Covenant, the new Eve, to conceive God. Are you telling me God took sanctuary in a sinner?

-While Peter was married, the Bible tells us that when Jesus called the disciples, they were told to leave behind everything, including families.

-Where does it show that Jesus’s brothers were Mary’s children? When Jesus was in the Temple at the age of 13, we see Jesus, Mary, and Joseph in that story, but no brothers or sisters. When Jesus died on the cross, he entrusted Mary to St. John. If he had a brother, then he would’ve entrusted Mary with a brother, as was Jewish custom. Yet, no brother was there. In Aramaic, the language of Jesus, the word “brother” meant a lot of things. It meant “brother”, “male cousin”, and even “male friend”. 1 Corinthians 2:1 states “When I came to you, brothers, proclaiming the mystery of God,…” Do you think Paul was speaking to just his brothers, his mother’s sons? After all, it clearly states “brother”.

-Man, you took that verse of Scripture horribly out of context. The same passage states that Jesus tells us to call no man “father”, “teacher”, or “master”. Do you honestly think Jesus was abolishing the actual uses of the words?
First Mary did have sin. Thats why she said in Luke 1:47 God, My Savior. Mary also presented an offering to the priest because of her sinful condition Lk 2:22-24 which was requird by law. Lev 12 Secondly Jesus did have brothers and sisters. Their names are listed in Matt 13:55-56. The reason Jesus handed over Mary to John is because his real brothers didn’t believe in Him (Jn 7:5) until the very end. They are not cousins as the Catholic leads you to believe. The Greek term for brother (adelphos) here is the normal word for “blood brother.” The same Greek word is never used for cousin in the NT.

If you would carefully read your bible you would see that the bible itself violates the rule of “call no man father”. Did you know that? Did you also know that many Protestants called their ministers “Father” a little over a hundred years ago and stopped when the Catholics started doing it? It also includes the titles rabbi and teacher.

Here are your references:

Acts 7:2, where Stephen refers to “our father Abraham,” or in Romans 9:10, where Paul speaks of “our father Isaac.”

“For this I was appointed a preacher and apostle . . . a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth” (1 Tim. 2:7);

It should be noted that there are 1,511 references to father, fathers. etc. in the King James version of Sacred Scripture. Most of these do not refer to God the Father. There is no admonition by Jesus or anyone else that these usages were wrong.
trosch.org/for/no-fathr.htm

I suggest you do some research on this subject as it has been addressed many, many times on this forum. You simply took what Jesus said literally and misunderstood what He was really saying. Don’t forget that the title “Father” was used by some Protestants. They ceased doing it when the Catholics starting calling their priests “Father” because they did not wish to be identified with the Catholic Church.

As you see, the answers to your questions can be lengthy as we try to cover all bases.

This still doesn’t show that Mary had sin. Of course God was her Savior, who do you think saved her from falling into sin? When she presented the offering she was doing two things: leading by example (like Christ when he was baptized) and saving her skin (if people found out she didn’t do it, they would stone her). In Aramaic, the word “brother” means much more than “man of the same mother”. It also mans “male cousin” and even “male friend”. The Bible never says that the brothers were also born of Mary. Where were the brothers when Jesus was 13 years old and he, Mary, and Joseph went to the Temple?

What? In Koine Greek, the form of Greek in which the NT was written, “petra” and “petros” both meant the same thing, “rock”. It’s unreasonable to think that the rock upon which the Church is built is anything other than Peter. Petr was called “petros” because it was masculine. When Jesus used “petra”, he used it in the general sense of the word. When Jesus said this, he used “and” after changing Peter’s name, not “but”. “Peter” means “rock”. Jesus called Simon “rock”, not his statement or himself. Besides, Jesus spoke Aramaic, where there’s only one word for rock, “Kepha”. So the statement went like, "You are Kepha and upon this Kepha I will build my Church. There are Protestants out there who admit that the “rock” is Peter.

Is this the view of other Anglicans? Other Protestants?
Some.
It seems to me that there was a website that provided answers to questions of this nature, from a Catholic perspective. Catholic Answers, I believe it was called.

Ah, yes. Here we are.

Signed,

Unrepentantly Sarcastic
Obviously Catholic Answers carries more wieght then scripture. 😃
Jesus was the Word. Mary was the Ark that bore the Word.
Why does the psalmist say thatr he will take refuge in the shadow of his wings and not her wings?

The wings were on the Ark of the covenant overshadowing the mercy seat. Our refuge is in Christ and his blood and not in Mary.

It says that The Sun of Rightousness shall rise with healing in his wings
Jesus is not the Ark of the New Covenant.
Yes he is.
The old Ark was where God dwelled (Ex. 25:8) - it was NOT God Himself.
Yes that as well

What do you think “I am in the Father and The Father is in me” means?

Also,

Ten Commandments = The Word of The Father = Christ
Jar of Manna = Bread of Heaven = Christ
Aarons staff = Authority of The High Priest = Authority of Christ.

The preists lifted up Christ. To say they lifted up Christ in Mary is bizarre.

I can’t wait to see answers to these! God Bless Dokimas
Check the pass froums the questions have been answer maybe 100 times but some non-cathloic keep using private and indivdual interpretations to read the bible…So one has said on this board that by the time the last book of the bible was written about 100ad the Cathloic Church was on its 5th pope. And we did not have one protestant on this earth.

Another “Protestants…” thread. Strawman erected. Bait cast out.

“Protestants can you help?” More like, “Protestants can you post so I can judge you and make a fool of you?”

Don’t play, folks.
But without Stawmen and ad hominem attacks, how are people supposed to post here?!

DorKiamas Hope you have time to read :

. Was Mary immaculately conceived?

. This means she had no stain of sin at her conception, no ‘Original Sin’.

. GOD and sin are mutually excludable. God cannot co-exist with sin. Rev 21:27

. When Adam and Eve sinned, they were thrown out of Eden and the gates of Heaven were closed (Gen 3:24). There was no salvation of mankind until Jesus Christ died on the cross, and the gates were reopened.

. When GOD gave the plans of the Ark of the Covenant’, to the people, he was very meticulous as to just how the ‘container’ of His ‘WORD’, the stone tablets of the ‘Ten Commandments’, was to be constructed. It had to be perfect and without blemish. Ex 25:8-40 E. The ‘New Ark of the Covenant’, the vessel that was to ‘contain’ the ‘WORD’, Jesus Christ Incarnate, had to be ‘made’ without blemish also.

. The ‘New Ark of the Covenant’ is Mary. She was to give birth to the ‘WORD’, Jesus Christ. Jn 1:1,14

Read Luke 1:28, ‘And when the Angel had come to her, he said, "Hail full of Grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women’." Luke 1:30, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for thou hast found Grace with GOD’. ‘Full of Grace’, and ‘Grace with GOD’, could only mean Mary was without sin. John the Baptist had not yet appeared to start the Sacrament of Baptism. If GOD created the entire universe out of nothing, don’t you think the GOD who imposed Adam’s Sin on mankind could make one little Jewish girl without original sin?

She had to be ‘Immaculately Conceived’ to satisfy the fact that GOD cannot coexist with sin.

. Was Mary always a virgin? Did she have other children?

. Mt 13:55-56 and MK 6:3 say, “Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, the ‘brother’ of James, and Joseph, and of Jude and Simon? And are not His ‘sisters’ here with us?”

At first it looks like Jesus had brothers and sisters. These are the main two verses that some say ‘prove’ He did. Lets look at the definitions.

. From four different dictionaries, the word ‘brother’ means, sons of the same parents, OR, friend, ally, kinsman, fellow man, member of the same clan, fellow member of a Church etc. Which definition fits the verses?

. Compare Mt 10:2-4, Mk 15:40, Jn 19:25, and Acts 1:13 and you will find that James, Joseph, and Jude were sons of Cleophas (Alphaeus) and ‘the other Mary’, not Mary the Mother of GOD. Simon was the ‘Canaanite’ of Mk 3:18, and the ‘Zealot’.

. NONE of the four ‘brothers’ were sons of Mary, the Mother of GOD. They were ‘fellow men’. This makes the word ‘brother’ a non-argument. Mt 12:50
