Mt 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
‘Peter’ in the Greek means a stone or rock. The word the Holy Spirit used in the phrase, ‘upon this rock’ for rock is petra which is much bigger, maybe even a cliff or ledge. Jesus wouldn’t build a church on a stone but on a ledge.
I believe the legde upon which Jesus has built his church is found in Mat 16:16, and that is the words Peter said of Jesus, “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” This is the Truth upon which the Church has been built. Take that truth away and there is no church.
Mt 16:19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
I’m not real sure but it says nothing about Peter passing the keys on to someone else.
Mt 18:17 And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell [it] unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.
The Greek word for church is ekklesia which means ‘called out ones; a gathering of people (in the case of Christians) to worship God’. I think one must be very careful to read anything more into the word church.
Mt 18:18 Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
I’m not sure but I’d be real careful how I would use this verse.
1Ti 3:15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
Great verse!!! The church (all Christians make up God’s Church) is so important. We need each other.
