Please provide for me the 40,000 names of each.
It was a protestant source that gave the statement. I heard it from a protestant minister on the Journey Home program on EWTN that had converted to the Catholic Faith. Maybe if you got on touch with the Coming Home Network, they could tell you the source. God Bless, Memaw

Seems to me, I read on an earlier post, about the “so called”, Sinner’s Prayer! I never realized it was capitalized! I for one, do not believe that there is a "standard " sinner’s prayer(like one you would read off a card). Try to remember back to that day, when you received Jesus into your heart; what did you pray, or did you? I was reading Acts, chapter 2, yesterday, and came to verse 38, where Peter is exhorting the crowd to repent, and turn to God for forgiveness of sins! I am going out on a limb, and saying that is essence, what this was, in unison, was a sinner’s prayer/confession, and an "altar call! I can almost hear those fingers typing already:thumbsup:

There is no “standardized” sinners prayer. However, there is a expectation that if you say this non standard prayer that you are saved (Past present and future text). At some point in the prayer a new believer is urged to “ask Jesus into his heart”. Yet its still a formality and an expression of conversion. But is this what the bible or the chapter you quoted asked us to do? Was there really an alter call? No there wasn’t what did Peter tell the Crowd?
When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”
38Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”
Specifically to repent (not ask jesus into your heart though its not a bad idea but its not specified) and be baptized. Not come up to the front to the “alter of christ” and pray. The method peter has here is Repent, baptize, and the holy spirit will come upon you.

How blessed is the man who fears always,
But he who hardens his heart will fall into calamity.

And that’s just a few, my goodness!!! And to think, Jesus prayed that we would all be ONE in HIM as HE is one with the Father. One Faith, One Baptism, One Church. By the Grace of God, I thank God I was born into His One True Church. I believe we should all pray and work for true Unity. Then we will see a big change for the better in this sad ole world. God Bless, Memaw

Primary issues deal with those sound doctrines revealed in Scripture that pertain to salvation; those that do not are secondary. RC’ism fails to differentiate. But that’s not surprising since its primarily a works based religion.
All Biblical doctrines pertain to matters of salvation.

Jesus makes it possible for everyone to receive His free “gift” of salvation, but He also has His own “conditions” attached to His gift as to how it must be “received” and also what must be done to “continue to keep His gift in our possession until death” so that it becomes an “everlasting” gift.

If you choose to call His Catholic/universal Salvation Plan “a works-based religion,” then this is something that you can take up with Him personally. 😉 Catholics do not believe that their religion is “works based,” but we believe that there are conditions set forth by Christ which must be met in order for us to inherit eternal life when we die.

Catholics believe that Christ’s grace saves them. But, we also know that we must cooperate with His gift of grace in order to inherit eternal life after we die.

How must a person cooperate with His grace on earth in order to inherit eternal life after death?

This is why John 8:11 states "She said, “No one, Lord.”
And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.”

Jesus forgives the adulteress but He also “commands” that she “sin no more” because if she does sin, then His grace will no longer save her. Jesus’ sacrifice for the remission of our sins (which we receive at baptism) no longer saves us when we deliberately break His commandments after we are first saved.

Hebrews 10:26-30 "For if we sin willfully/deliberately after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries. 28 Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. And again, “The LORD will judge His people.”

If you sin, then you insult the Spirit of grace, and He no longer abides/resides/remains in your temple/soul/heart and unless you repent before death, you will not inherit eternal life.

1 Cor. 3:16-18 “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 17 If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are.

What happens if you do not believe what Paul teaches, what if you believe that once you are saved, that then you cannot lose your salvation? Paul continues with:

18 Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise.”

You deceive yourself if you think that you can disobey Jesus’ commandments and still inherit eternal life.

Jesus states in Matt. 19:17 "But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.

John states in Revelation that those who have not defiled their baptismal garments by sin are the ones who are worthy to inherit eternal life.

Rev. 3:4 “You have a few names even in Sardis who have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with Me in white, for they are worthy.”

Jesus does not “do it all.” We cooperate with His Plan of Salvation by believing in Him and because of this belief, we are baptized and baptism makes us disciples of Christ. Then we are taught by the Church how to live good moral Christian lives in imitation of Jesus and the Saints so that after we have endured in the faith until death by believing and obeying the gospel of Christ, we are then deemed worthy/approved to inherit the crown of eternal life.

James 1:12 “Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.”

Only those who are worthy actually inherit eternal life and receive their everlasting crowns.

Who is worthy to inherit eternal life? Who is condemned?

John 5:28-29 “Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice 29 and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.”

2 Thess. 1:7-8 "when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, 8 in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.

This is what Christians desire to hear when they meet Jesus after death:

“His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’” Matthew 25:23

The faithful servant actually had to do something well in order to inherit eternal life.

How must a person “cooperate” with God’s grace in order to inherit eternal life?

Romans 12:1 “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.”

1 Peter 2:5 “you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.”

1 Peter 1:15-16 "but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”

1 Peter 2:24 “who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.”

Romans 6:19 “I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness.

Romans 6:16 “Do you not know that** to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness**?”

Hebrews 5:9 “And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him,”

2 Corinthians 7:1 “Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.”

Romans 12:2 “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”

Matthew 7:21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.”
**
Heaven or hell? Our own “free will” choices, which we “do” until our deaths, will determine our own eternal home!**

once you realize there is only One Church the rest is easy…

so why do you not think its the Catholic Church?
Because at the time of the split the western “church” claimed catholicity, and the eastern “church” claimed orthodoxy. So the western “church” called itself the Roman Catholic church, and the eastern called itself the Eastern Orthodox church. And interesting enough the Eastern Orthodox church considers the Roman Bishop the first “Protestant.”

Well said. The Pope is infallible whenever he makes an ex cathedra statement – which is to say whenever, in the exercise of his office of chief shepherd and teacher of all Christians, he defines a matter of faith and morals to be believed by all.

(I just hope moondweller overhears our conversation. :D)
Go back to what I posted quoting Vat. 1 & 2 (which, btw, was at your request). Only this time read to comprehend.

Hi moondweller,

That’s a good suggestion, except that you’ve got it backwards. You’re the one who needs to go back and re-read the quotations from Vatican I and Vatican II. They do say that the Pope is infallible whenever he makes an ex cathedra statement, as Distracted and I said in posts #568 and #580, respectively. They do not say that the Pope is infallible whenever he speaks on faith and morals (as I’ve been trying to tell you right along, going back to post #461).

Where Peter ,(the Pope) is, there is the Catholic Church. The Pope is the head of Christ’s Church. When the Eastern Orthodox broke away from the Catholic Church, sadly that put them in schism. Hopefully one day we will see their return to unity with the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. I was talking to a Bishop of an Eastern Orthodox Church and he said he hoped it would be in his lifetime. He hopes he will live to see that happen. I am hoping and praying for the same thing but I am much older than he. God Bless, Memaw

Moondweller, my friend. Divine revelation has to be certain correct? There is no way written language(Bible)alone can communicate that revelation. It is simply a fact of the limits of written language. There must be a teaching authority to communicate and better understand what that written revelation means. Good evidence suggest Christ gave the commission to the Catholic Church. Forget the personalities, focus on the beauty of the revelation. God Bless Hoping you begin the journey home.🙂

The Eastern church NEVER recognized the self asserted “authority” of the Bishop of Rome. Historically, the BOR was “honored” because Rome was the ancient capital of the empire, but he was never recognized in the east as “head of the church.” In fact, the Ecumenical Council of Chalecedon (451), composed of assembled Bishops from all the world, gave the Patriarch of Constantinople equal prerogatives with the BOR. The evolution of the authority of the BOR occurred only in the west. That’s why he’s called the head of the “Roman Catholic Church.” The church of Rome took on the NAME “Catholic.” But it was never “catholic” (universal) in reality. It took on that name like a Protestant denomination might call itself “The Church of Christ.”

The Scriptures are unique in that they’re theopneustos.

God raises up “teachers” in the Body of Christ (Eph. 4:11), but nowhere is it ever said that He appoints official “interpreters.”
Good evidence suggest Christ gave the commission to the Catholic Church.
There’s no “good evidence” of the sort. It’s what you’re told. It’s what you believe. It’s what makes you RC.
Forget the personalities, focus on the beauty of the revelation. God Bless Hoping you begin the journey home.🙂
I began my journey home the very moment I believed in the Person and, once for all, sacrificial work of Jesus Christ on my behalf. Home? See Phil. 3:20-21 as to where my citizenship is. See 1 Thess. 4:15-18 as to how I’m going to get there.

Thanks for the “God Bless.” May He do the same for you as He as for me.

Moondweller, remember Christ said to the apostles " they who hear you, hear me" and Peter was given the " keys". All history is an approximation but it is the best evidence or good evidence we can get. It is pointless to resist my friend. God Bless 🙂

You misinterpreted this council.

This council is in regard to individual Bishops over their own individual episcopates. Each Bishop is head of his own diocese, but the Patriarch of Constantinople has jurisdiction/preeminence over all Bishops in the Eastern Rite and the Bishop of Rome has jurisdiction/preeminence over all the bishops in the Western Rite.
**
This council had absolutely nothing to do concerning the primacy of the pope.**

The Keeper of the Keys” is the chief steward over all members of Christ’s Church. Jesus gave the Keys of the Kingdom to only one Apostle. There is a reason for this and Biblical precedent in Isaiah 22.

Do you understand that the chief steward (keeper of the keys) is the only steward who is given the keys of the kingdom of heaven? Do you understand that there can only be one chief steward at a time? When this chief steward can no longer perform his office, another is always appointed to take his place and perform his duties. It is an office which cannot remain vacant.

Since from the very beginning, Church leaders have believed/taught orally and later written about Peter’s Primacy, shouldn’t you stop questioning it? 😃

Here is just one example from the many quoted:
Clement of Alexandria
“[T]he blessed Peter, the chosen, the preeminent, the first among the disciples, for whom alone with himself the Savior paid the tribute [Matt. 17:27], quickly grasped and understood their meaning. And what does he say? ‘Behold, we have left all and have followed you’ [Matt. 19:27; Mark 10:28]” (Who Is the Rich Man That Is Saved? 21:3–5 [A.D. 200]).

This is what I said:

The primacy of the pope over all Christendom was **not an issue **at this council. The issue was the **primacy of the patriarch **over the all the other bishops in the Eastern Rite.

Here is another quote from the Early Church Fathers regarding the primacy of the pope:
Tertullian
“For though you think that heaven is still shut up, remember that the Lord left the keys of it to Peter here, and through him to the Church, which keys everyone will carry with him if he has been questioned and made a confession [of faith]” (Antidote Against the Scorpion 10 [A.D. 211]).
“[T]he Lord said to Peter, ‘On this rock I will build my Church, I have given you the keys of the kingdom of heaven [and] whatever you shall have bound or loosed on earth will be bound or loosed in heaven’ [Matt. 16:18–19]. . . . Upon you, he says, I will build my Church; and I will give to you the keys, not to the Church” (Modesty 21:9–10 [A.D. 220]).

sambos671: Interesting reply!😃 Peter was also telling the people that they could(just as we can) receive the gift of the Holy Spirit!👍 This is the Advocate Jesus promised to send us, after He was ascended! What a joy, that through belief in Christ, acceptanc of His offer of salvation, we can have the gift of the Holy Spirit! And I believe(hate to nit pick)that would be the Altar of God! And speaking of baptism, if as you contend, is a requirement to be saved, were the people that John the Baptist baptized “saved”?

Question; were the 3,000 who were saved in Acts 2:38, baptized before Peter implored them to repent, or after? When we repent, and turn to God for forgiveness(remission) of our sins, we are then baptized, and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit:thumbsup: Imagine that!

With all due respect to the pope; a great man of God, I never have viewed him as the patriarch over all of Christendom; just over the catholics! And I never have, and never will, refer to him as holy father! The Almighty living God, is the ONLY one deserving of the title, Holy Father! The pope, seems to be a nice man, and if I ever had the opportunity to meet him, I would shake his hand, and say,“God has richly blessed you!”😃
