I have taken a few courses in Catholic theology at the University level, but I wouldn’t kid myself into knowing everything. I think it really depends on the Protestant you talk to… and how different they feel Catholicism is from their own beliefs.

We are different, there’s no doubt about that but we are very similar in many ways too. I think we should build on the things we agree on and not ridicule others where we don’t. Love and understanding is sooo important. Christ prayed for unity, not division. I hope you and AJthe man, learned enough to show you we do NOT worship Mary, or statues and clear up other false notions about the Catholic Faith. God Bless, Memaw

Fair to say. But for the sake of this discussion with this particular topic; Are you suggesting then that there are protestant denominations that have no extra biblical “traditions”? If so, then I am wrong and will admit the correction. If I am not wrong, why then attack Catholics for following their traditions? Would not that attack be disengenous? If there is a protestant denomination that does not practice and extra biblical “tradition” please inform me which it is.
I’m not suggesting anything other than it seems, on this thread, that both Catholics and non-Catholics alike are attacking each other for generalizations that aren’t usually true.

What’s the purpose? Especially starting a thread off assuming that all Protestants are ill-informed and just want to bash Catholicism? Not all do. That’s my point.

We’re not Democrats and Republicans - we’re Christians. We ought to act like it.

Luke,

Catholics are not ever taught to tell falsehoods about non-Catholics, but from the mouth of many, many protestants, they tell us they have been taught lies about the Catholic Church from their preachers, and they cling to them like they are a lifeline. Jack Chick publications are a classic example and they are distributed by many protestant churches. I have known many protestants that have believed falsehoods about my faith and they will NOT believe me when I tell them they are not true.

Also there are many protestant ministers that have studied the Bible, fully, and the Early Church Fathers and found the Catholic Church to be true in everything it teaches. It is amazing how there are so many protestant ministers, from ever denomination, that have and are becoming Catholic, when they learn the TRUTH. Now do you really think they would have become Catholic if there was any truth to the lies spread about Catholicism by so many. They are well educated people and would not have been easily fooled by the Catholic Church. AND they sacrificed so much to follow the TRUTH. I have always believed it is foolish to follow something or someone that isn’t truthful. The TRUTH will set you free!! I suggest watching “Journey Home” on EWTN Catholic Cable network, on Monday nights at 7 pm, CST. You may be surprised by the truth. And Patrick Madrid has an excellent set of books, 3 volumes, titled “Surprised by Truth” telling about those who were surprised by the truth. I believe you can get those thru Catholic Answers if you are interested. God Bless, Memaw

IMO I don’t see how this is possible. To thoroughly understand the Catholic teachings/theology requires almost a degree on Theology. To study at least 2000yr history is a lot to ask. If they did chances are that they would be Catholic (not all).
Cardinal John Newman was reported as saying, " To be steep in history is to cease to be Protestant."

All I can say is thank God I am not a part of the RCC! Just look at the joy and power and life in the music of non RCC’s and put it up next to the sad sounds that emanate from the RCC and you will get one of many hints as to where the true life and power is. Turn your radio on and listen to the Christian music you love. Guess how much was produced by Roman Catholics???
Firstly, this is a very peculiar way to argue against the Catholic Church. “Our music is better than your music, therefore our doctrine trumps yours?”

Secondly, let’s just say that it’s true that your church’s music provides “joy and power and life”. Can that sustain you? Your church provides the romance and emotional high of a courtship (i.e it’s the flowers and boxes of chocolates). The Catholic Church gives you the Person, the Divine Marriage, the Beloved Other.

Yes, there are some that do not have or hold to extra biblical traditions…or perhaps that is a tradition in and of itself LOL (trying to see both sides here).
Show me one. Just one. And I will show you the extra biblical tradition it holds.

Ok.

Could you please attend an RCIA class (finish it) before attempting to argue Catholic versus Protestant theology…

Yes, i suppose Catholics should study various Protestant theologies also… but i feel most Catholics on the forums have (more or less) done that…

I’m sorry, but it really rankles me when Protestants think they know Catholic theology and they so positively DO NOT!!

another source of information about the true Catholic faith can be found here at Catholic Answers…

I just don’t think it is right to attack something you do not understand…
Well, since I’ve been on this forum I’ve encountered several very well versed Protestants in RC’ism. They’ve done their research and in many cases know RC’ism better than many RCs on this forum - and can debate Christianity from a pure Biblical basis. But often when backed into a corner, theologically, the RC responds with “you misunderstand the Catholic faith.” And that simply is not the case.

However, if there are any Protestants out there who desire to be better educated on RC’ism from a Biblical viewpoint, PM me and I’ll recommend a good book. Maybe this will help to ease “distracted’s” frustration.

They may be ‘well versed’ in what they think Catholicism is all about but believe me they really don’t. If they did, they would cease to be protestant and come home to the fullness of the true faith in the Catholic Church. I agree that to many Catholics are not as knowledgeable in their Catholic faith as they should be but that doesn’t make the teachings of the Catholic Church any less true. If one studied Catholicism from a Biblical’ viewpoint, in its entirety, one would defiantly become Catholic, that is if they truly want to follow Jesus Christ and HIS Church. I have one question for you. Where was the Bible for the first 400 years of Christianity and how were the people taught about Christ and His Church? They were taught by Sacred Tradition and that’s in the Bible too. And that’s Catholic. The Bible was put into it present form by the Catholic Church. It cannot be seperated from Sacred Tradition and the Catholic Church. We can see in all the divisions of protestantism today the harm that has done. The Bible only just doesn’t work.

You need to study the Early Church Fathers and then see who is really the one true Church. God Bless, Memaw

Hi moondweller,

I think a lot of what you said is right-on-the-money. However, your last paragraph seems rather suspicious – why don’t you recommend “a good book” right here for all of us? Very suspicious, if you ask me. :hmmm:

P.S. What does “bac” mean? Just curious.

The statement in bold is a non-sequitur. You could study and come to a different conclusion than the CC. For instance Tertullian often quoted by Catholics and some of his writings are in the office did not agree with Orthodox Catholics on certian points but with Montanus. Surely, he understood the early Church and the ECF writings. Nestorius Also well versed in Catholic theology could not assimilate Theotokos but remained with Christokos. Yet both of these men (though heretics) disagreed though they had the same material to work with as the other ECF. And note Sacred Tradition, though alluded to in the early church, was not as clearly defined then as it is now. Surely, an ECF may be confused by some of the language defining certain issues from Sacred tradition.

“Bac” = “born again Christian.”

Nothing suspicious. This thread is not about book recommendations.

Very good post. Also, many of those early church writers were Premillennial in their eschatology, while the CC, after the fourth century evolved into Augustinian Amillennialism which spiritualized the Messianic Kingdom which was literally anticipated by the ancient Hebrew prophets of the O.T.

Yes such as Ireneaus.

Are you claiming they were Historic Premil or Dispy Premil?

And I also would like to know what book you are referring to, but please post it here, not in pm, for the sake of honesty and openess.
