A question to protestants.

Do you believe that the Catholic Church is the Church of the protestant religion?

the reason i am asking you this is because i have the impression that most protestants believe that the Catholic Church fell into apostasy and the protestant religion became the true religion.

my protestant friend tells me she is catholic but not RC.

help me to understand this. how do you consider yourselves Catholics but not RC? where did you get the name Catholic?

Peace!

Generally, when Protestants refer to themselves as catholic, they are using the meaning of the word(universal). The understanding would be that every believer in Christ, and in most cases, at least the decisions by the first 4 ecumenical councils are part of the “catholic” church.

For the most part, the only non RC Christians I’ve came across would be those of Anglican/Lutheran/Methodist flavor.

it seems that like there are more and more protestants claiming that.

so what are they trying to acomplish with this believe?

Well, I am not a Protestant. I am Catholic. Not Roman Catholic.

Roman Catholic is only one of many of Catholic Churches in full union with the Roman Church.

I am Melkite Catholic. There is also Byzantine Catholic. Maronite Catholic. Coptic Catholic. Oriental Catholic. Etc. Etc.

What type of Catholic is your friend?

Why do you assume she is not actually Catholic?

Confused…how is it that you don’t know about all the other Catholic Churches in union with Rome?

yes i understand about those other Catholics. what i dont understand is how many protestants claim the name Catholic when rejecting the Catholic Church. it is almost like a new attempt to take over the CC since they have not been able to bring it down completely.

peace.

All of my family is Protestant and I’m surprised I’ve never heard of that being done.

It may just boil down to: “People are weird!”

Have a Great Weekend!

Peace,
Christy

I do not refer to myself as Catholic and won’t unless I become one.

I read an article in Christianity Today magazine a couple months back that was talking about a revival of liturgical worship within modern protestant churches, especially among college age youth. Many are starting to discover, or better yet, re-discover ancient worship. I seriously doubt it is a conspiracy to take down the CC. It may even lead to conversions to either the Orthodox or Catholic churches.

i hope you are right on this. but i still think we need to be aware of the wolves clothed as sheep. our Lord’s warnings.

Peace.

The word katholikos means “universal.” It is a part of the Apostles’ Creed which is said every worship service in many Protestant Churches. As far as the Catholic Church falling into apostacy, it would be more accurate historically to say that it’s hierarchy became corrupt and that there was fault on both sides.

Why am I not Catholic? It might have had something to do with the fact that there wasn’t a Catholic Church in the town I grew up in… nor was there one in any of the towns next to us. However, there was a United Methodist Church within walking distance.

I understand your situation…
we must remember that Catholics when came to this country encountered great resistance and many were forced to become protestants. It was a very dark time to Catholics at the time.

Peace.

I just found this quote here

cin.org/users/jgallegos/catholic.htm

"Peter speaks there, on whom the Church was to be built, teaching and showing in the name of the Church, that although a rebellious and arrogant multitude of those who will not hear and obey may depart, yet the Church does not depart from Christ; and they are the Church who are a people united to the priest, and the flock which adheres to its pastor. Whence you ought to know that the bishop is in the Church, and the Church in the bishop; and if any one be not with the bishop, that he is not in the Church, and that those flatter themselves in vain who creep in, not having peace with God’s priests, and think that they communicate secretly with some; while the Church, which is Catholic and one, is not cut nor divided, but is indeed connected and bound together by the cement of priests who cohere with one another."
Cyprian,To Florentius,Epistle 66/67(A.D. 254),in ANF,V:374-375

If your friend’s church recites the Nicene or Apostles Creed (which Methodists, Anglicans and others do), she may have made the connection there.

She also may be thinking church universal (as in little “c”).

In answer to your question about the Catholic church being the church of the protestant religion - Most protestants I know would say no for various reasons.

Personally I am drawn to the Eastern Orthodox church as opposed to the Catholic church (although I’d be interested in attending an Eastern Catholic service if there was one anywhere near me).

yes they do. but instead of the Catholic Church they say one christian church.

universal is what the CC is. so it makes no sense that they would assume the name Catholic without being in the CC.

cin.org/users/jgallegos/catholic.htm found this quote here.

"Inasmuch, I repeat, as this is the case, we believe also in THE HOLY CHURCH, [intending thereby] assuredly the CATHOLIC. For both heretics and schismatics style their congregations churches. But heretics, in holding false opinions regarding God, do injury to the faith itself; while schismatics, on the other hand, in wicked separations break off from brotherly charity, although they may believe just what we believe. Wherefore neither do the heretics belong to the Church catholic, which loves God; nor do the schismatics form a part of the same, inasmuch as: it loves the neighbor, and consequently readily forgives the neighbor’s sins, because it prays that forgiveness may be extended to itself by Him who has reconciled us to Himself, doing away with all past things, and calling us to a new life. And until we reach the perfection of this new life, we cannot be without sins. Nevertheless it is a matter of consequence of what sort those sins may be."
Augustine,On Faith and Creed,10:21(A.D. 393),in NPNF1,III:331
