basically, Luther was a foul-mouthed, egotistical… (etc…) person… He said VILE things about the pope and others… and vile things about the Church…
Yes, Luther, it would seem, had some serious emotional / moral problems, for how else explain his incredibly vehement style and vulgar language? How vulgar? Well, just look at these two examples (there are many more in the references cited below, particularly in the works of Fr. Grisar).
The following two examples are from his
Tischreden or
Table Talk (caution: the language is a bit rough!).
Luther Suffers Pain and Expects His End. Winter of 1542-1543. No. 5537, recorded by Caspar Heydenreich (1516-1586).
I’m like a ripe stool and the world’s like a gigantic anus, and so we’re about to let go of each other.

The next quote is also from his Table Talk (not the American ed.). This is from the “Aufzeichnungen” i.e. “Notes,” taken at Luther’s table by his friend, Johannes Mathesius. Luther, speaking against the Pope (in a mixture of Latin and German) says:
Si me papa citaverit, non veniam. Ich
schis im auf die Citation, quia est adversarius. Si autem concilium mihi diem indixerit, tunc ob temperabo.
(The older German schis = schiss = scheißen)
Hartmann Grisar (vol. 3, p. 232, “Language of the Table Talk”) has this translation of the above quote:

Were the Pope to cite me to appear before him, I should not go. I should sh-t upon the summons because he is hostile to me; but were I summoned to by a council, then I should go.

Please friends, don’t see this as “Luther bashing;” this is most certainly not my intention at all. What is my intention is merely to present the, “facts about Luther,” as they emerge from
his own writings and sayings.
The book you refer to is a book written from a roman Catholic view point. Anybody can write a book and tell others what they think somebody else said. Or rather how they interpeted what was said Words and statements can be taken out of context.
Yes, it’s written from a Catholic viewpoint, but so what? That doesn’t mean the statements contained therein aren’t factual. But below are more works which you can check out, some of which are original sources. You can peruse them at your leisure. I hope you find them helpful.
