St. Anna wasn’t a virgin when she conceived and bore Mary. Our Blessed Mother had an elder sister, *Mariam *(daughter of Heli). Our Lady’s mother wasn’t barren before she conceived Mary.

If in fact Pope Benedict lV had condemned the belief in the miraculous conception of Mary, he could have erred in his judgment. There are seven infallible papal documents in existence according to the criteria infallibly set by Vatican l Council. De Festis is not one of them. Nor did Pope Benedict lV ever issue an infallible encyclical.

Pax Christu :harp:
By the way, Peter, Pope Benedict reigned from 1740 to 1758. In 1677 our Pontiff was Innocent Xl. He wrote only two encyclicals, Coelestis Pastor and Sollictudo pastoralis, neither of which condemn belief in the miraculous conception of Mary nor even touch the subject of Mary. I have a list of all papal encyclicals ever issued to the Church, but *De Festis *is not among them in my Catholic sources for some reason.

Being right or wrong often times can be misinterpreted in itself. It may not have anything to do with right and wrong, but in immaturity and maturity of faith. For what is true for one on the milk of the Word may one day not bear the same truth when on the meat of the Word. For as a new born babe in the faith grows, a truth can grow bringing far more understanding then when first conceived through the HS. God reveals that of himself on what we can handle. A newborn babe cannot take meat, but is nurtured by the milk.
I think this is nicely put. And re-enforces the beauty of Our Mother The Church in guiding us in Faith. For Just as a “Babe” on milk needs a Mother to care for and help it grow so do we in our growth in faith, lest we grow, not in faith and discipline, but as wild and undisciplined children making error afer error due to either ignoring or never having the guidance of our Mother in faith.

Peace
James

Is the written word equal to or does it encompass completely the Word of God made flesh? Are there things that Jesus said and did which His Apostles witnessed which are not recorded in the written word? Could the other things and explanations of meanings have been discussed and handed down from Apostle (Bishop) to others verbally with the protection of the Holy Spirit?
It is written that Jesus is the Word of God. You ask of the things did with the apostles which were not recorded. Would it not be the will of God that they be recorded?
The sad part is there use to be only one interpretation, the church was at one time in accord, each city or town church believed the same thing, believed the gospel of Jesus Christ. Yet, over time, the enemy has down things that has brought about a massive attack on the faith, creating vast confusion.

The first and foremost was the attack on the Word of God. Men began interpreting the Word through the flesh and not through the Holy Spirit, thus creating devisions. They took away words, added words, and changed words which brought about interpretations that created different religions, each claiming to be the barer of the truth.

So how does a man know what version of the bible is the truth? The man must not allow himself to be influenced by the flesh, and he must walk in the spirit. The man must trust only God. The man must seek God with all of his heart, mind and soul. And this all starts at salvation, the moment when a man is completely submissive to the will of God. He then must remain in the faith, reading God’s Word, praying always and fellowship with others in the body of Christ which make up the church.

These are nice, and you have written pretty well. Although it is not which version of the Bible that was being discussed, but all the different interpretations of the same exact text as written in the Holy Scriptures. Different people make their own interpretations, and therefore all can’t be correct! The terribly irony here is that you’re doing exactly what you described the problem is, in making interpretations (gleaning meanings) that are opposed to what the early Church taught.

Please consider and answer the other questions. It would be better if you posted the answers to us, because your “spirit guide” is misleading you, and bringing you into these false interpretations you speak of.

Since there are so many different interpretations which conflict directly with each other, who is authorized to teach the word of God since they all can’t be right, even though almost all claim that they have the Holy Spirit?

Do you have authority from God to interpret His written word?

[Will you please do us the favor of posting properly, and not putting your quote inside of mine. It does not belong there, and it therefore is a distortion of my quote. ]

Just as it is written in the Word of God. It is not suppose to happen. Yet, men sin and it occurs. If a man becomes devorced, can he not be forgiven?

Now the bible does say divorce is allowed if the husband or wife is unfaithful.
Jesus does NOT say divorce is allowed if there is unfaithfulness. In fact, He clarified that “in the beginning, it was not so”. The Apostles taugth that, if a spouse is left, the faithful spouse should remain single. It is through the prayers and faithfulness of this believing spouse that the sinning one can be saved.
It tells us in the bible that the Word of God was published throughout the regions.
This is a reference to the preached word of God, the kerygma. This is what was afterward written and became the NT. At that time, the NT did not exist.
All that the apostles wrote were deemed as inspired by the HS was given to each church to prevent this church or that church from being spiritually stiffled.
There is no record that most of the Apostles ever wrote anything. There was also great dispute in the Church as to whether or not some of the writings were, in fact, inspired. What kept the churches in the order of God and Spiritually nourished was the Teaching of the Apostles, also referred to as Sacred Tradition.
In other words, the apostles made sure each church know the gospel of Jesus Christ. Each church received the correct interpretation from the apostles.
This is true, but it happened prior to any writing being done.
That is why the letters Paul wrote were so essential to the growth of the church. For when a church had difficulty in understanding, he would write letters to help them understand the things of the spirit.
This is certainly true, but the Church was not dependent upon the letters, and not all the communities had them.
Yes it does teach this since it is written in the Word of God. Yet, if the man divorces a woman who committed adultry, he can remarry since the divorce was justified in the eyes of God. So in other words, if the man remarries, he will not be committing adultry.
You are taking liberties with a concession God gave to Moses because of the hardness of people’s hearts, over the teaching of Jesus, who gives us His Spirit to soften our hearts. Why would any devoted Christian do such a thing? It is like saying, “oh, yes, I believe that Jesus’ blood is more effective than that of bulls and goats, but I am still going to go back and sacrifice a goat, because that is the way it used to be done.”

The sad part is there use to be only one interpretation, the church was at one time in accord, each city or town church believed the same thing, believed the gospel of Jesus Christ…
So, then, heiscoming, do you believe that the early Church Fathers’ writings would be a true representation of how the gospel of Jesus Christ was understood? Have you read their writings?

The sad part is there use to be only one interpretation, the church was at one time in accord, each city or town church believed the same thing, believed the gospel of Jesus Christ.
All of these Churches were united with the office of chief Bishop established by Christ to keep His Church correct, keep her from teaching error.

Yes, there were a heretics along the way, but the Reformation (deformation actually) did great deal of harm to the faithful. Out of this, the idea that men could determine what their own truth is, was born. The effects today are scandalous and intolerable.

All through this, the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church has never once taught error and has always faithfully taught without error, and administered His seven Sacraments, the first of which is Baptism or entrance into His Church. We thank God for His Catholic Church, which exists on earth, in Purgatory, and in Heaven. If you want a glimpse of things that happen in Heaven, go to a Catholic Mass.

The sad part is there used to be only one interpretation, the church was at one time in accord, each city or town church believed the same thing, believed the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Alright, as long as you mean that in the sense of “unity in essentials”. Clearly they didn’t agree on every single detail of what was revealed.

I’d say that’s easy in the case of the New Testament – seeing as Christians have agreed for about 1600 years on which books are in the NT – although not so easy with regard to the Old Testament.

This problem (and others) only exists for non Catholics, and those Catholics who act like non Catholics. It is not up to democratic vote to see which Scripture texts belong in the Bible, and many get into error believing in false authority. Beyond which Scriptures belong, it is also possible to attribute false meanings to the words and phrases in the Scriptures by those who believe in false authority. Faithful Catholics do know without error the books of the NT and OT. So, for those who genuinely believe in Christ and listen to those He sent it is very easy, to know which Scriptures belong in the New as well as Old Testament. Thankfully, we who believe in true Authority listening to those who Christ sent to continue His mission, also know the teachings of the Scriptures without error in matters of faith and morals.

Thank you for pointing that out, Good Fella.

To be honest, I’m really pretty surprised: I know the 1913 Catholic Encyclopedia is criticized a lot for its “traditionalist” bias; but I certainly wouldn’t haven’t expected it to contain an error of this sort.

So the bottom line, heiscominginthe, is I’m unsure whether the Catholic Church has ever condemned the claim that Mary was born by a “virgin birth”. Nevertheless, I think it is clear that it cannot be called a “Catholic claim”.

This is why Christ established the office of Head Bishop, now called the Papacy. This is how matters are settled, so that all know the teachings without error. When Peter spoke authoritatively (protected from error by the Holy Spirit), the matter was settled. It is no different today, when the Pope settles matters.

You know what - It seems to me that this whole discussion misses a very basic point, That being that May’s parents, (in the protoevangeleam) laments being Childless. I assume that they are lamenting this in spite of their best efforts. In other words Anne was not a virgin Long before Mary’s conception. So regardless of the details of Mary’s conception, she was not born of a virgin.🤷

Right. That’s why I put “virgin birth” in quotation marks. I.e. the question isn’t whether Anne was still a virgin at the time of Mary’s birth; the question is the details of Mary’s conception.

You’re welcome, Peter. Unfortunately, there are sources of information that are somewhat irresponsible to sincere people who consult them. I contacted a theologian with whom I’m acquainted, and he told me that De festis is a private theological work written by the Pontiff. So as a private work, it isn’t even a non-infallible document of the Ordinary Magisterium, but fallible. This explains why (and I suspected as much) De Festis isn’t counted among Pope Benedict’s encyclicals. As I said, the Church has never taken an official position on whether Mary’s conception was natural or miraculous. It appears the Magisterium hasn’t even given the idea much thought. It still remains only a matter of private theological speculation. The dogma of the Immaculate Conception was initially just that for many centuries in the Patristic period.

prmerger: I believe that the crux of the discussion about whether or not Mary ever had"normal" sexual relations with her husband, revolves around, the catholics, by way of apostolic teaching, believing that Mary was born a virgin, and died a virgin, versus non-catholics, who believe that she had other children, after Jesus! Neither side can prove their theories, which means that we continue to embrace our positions, rendering both sides, neither totally wrong or totally right! The scriptures say that Mary was a virgin at the time of Jesus’s birth, and anyone with a lick of sense could deduce that she was avirgin before that! There is however, no evidence suggesting that she died a virgin, or was born “sinless”, since she was born of a woman, like the rest of us! When the scripture says, that Joseph did not have sexual relations with her until AFTER the baby was born, that’s what I believe; that’s it’s possible that they had relations sometime AFTER Jesus’s birth!

Yes, 1beleevr, in your theological system–sola Scriptura–you are correct in saying that the best we can hope for in this Scriptural dispute is a “tie”. Your Bible-believing church provides no system for a “tie-breaker”. You have no person, no authority by which you can appeal.

Yet, Catholics believe that God, in His infinite wisdom, left us an authority by which Scriptural disputes could be resolved–His Church, which provides the authoritative, infallible interpretation of Scripture! Although this authority does not provide for us a verse by verse interpretation, it does offer a final voice for disputes. Disputes such as whether Mary remained a virgin or not after her betrothal!

Yes, and the fruits of sola scriptura include moral relativism, where each individual can decide their own truth about morality, right and wrong. It’s their version that matters. What God taught is actually not really the issue, as they have no way of knowing. The idea of deciding what is morally right and wrong is to act in God’s place, being like God in things that only He has the Divine Right to do. This is the sin of pride of our first parents. Have we as a society learned nothing since then?

Or you could get stuck on personal pride, and remain catholic:eek:I hope what MDK said, isn’t true; that if you honestly seek the truth, or is it TRUTH(Jesus)myou will become Roman catholic:eek: And we hear the voice of our Shepherd, He speaks to me every day! And not all of us non-catholics celebrate he Sabbath on Saturday; I for one celebrate it on Sunday!👍

! And not all of us non-catholics celebrate he Sabbath on Saturday; I for one celebrate it on Sunday!👍
Exactly my point 1beleevr! There’s Bible-believing folks out there who are adamant that their interpretation of Scripture is right and that Saturday is what Scripture says is when you should celebrate!

So, between your church and this other bible-believer, all you can do is shrug and say it’s a tie.

In regards to post#724, there is a difference between an “insulting inuendo” and an observation! When I see the pope or any other religious leader, dressed in ostentatious vestment, I wonder, why? If a man is supposed to be a symbol of humiity, why the need to dress up in brightly colored, and decorated clothing! Not to say that he needs to dress like a pauper, but God doesn’t look at the outside, He looks at the heart! And as for dresssing informally of formally to go to church, I was relieved to see men entering a catholic church(that I passed on the way to the Third Day concert) wearing Levi’s and button-down shirts! Is it really that important, whether we dress formally, when in the presence of God? Was Moses, Abraham, or Jacob? When we came to Christ, were our garments formal, or were we cloaked in a coat of sin and unbelief? When we are at our worst, is usually when we first encounter our Saviour!
