Protestants: How Do You Know That Your Interpretation of the Bible is the Right one? Part II

That is certainly correct. Since there WERE no denominations at the time, the Word Catholic was used as a despriptor of the ONE Church. That is that it is “Universal” Church.
And obviously, there was less agreement within this “universal” church than the RCC likes to admit. Otherwise the nature of Jesus wouldn’t have been determined by a 60/40 split vote with only a minority of churches represented.
This can be a bit of a sticky wicket.
First of all a person would need to determine if those in authority are, in fact, teaching caontrary to God’s Word and Will as given to The Church. Then the person should determine the best course of action.
Actually the Church has in place processes for dealing with those who are found to be teaching contrary to Magesterial teachings. usually it would involve writing to the Bishop, and if not getting satisfaction there, writing the Vatican itself.
One would hope that, through the use of these channels, some satisfactory solusion can be reached by either, the offending authority being fraternally corrected or, the person making the complaint being convinced of the correctness of the teaching.
The upshot of using this approach is that one is not relying on their own ideas/interpretation, but rather utilizing the full knowledge and authority of the Church to come to a correct understanding.
It is not just a situation where one must just - keep their mouth shut.
Peace
James

A gathering of Christians.
That would be meaningless if we were trying to settle a dispute between two brothers from different “gatherings” of Christians.

The passage from Matthew makes sense ONLY if the Church is united and everyone knows what is meant by “the Church”.

But the title is asking why “Protestants” think their interpretation is correct. Shouldn’t you be the one explaining your interpretation in this particular thread?

They don’t have a leg to stand on. How many of them at least have a sneaky suspicion they don’t, and yet do not explore why… or how many know they don’t, and choose to remain in the wrong?

Everybody did know, because they spoke the language. It means a gathering of people called out, which has nothing to do with submission to the Pope.

It’s been sufficiently demonstrated that the RCC has as many problems as Protestants when it comes to choosing who or what is the authority.

Does it matter to you that the nature of Jesus was correctly decreed at this council? Would you rather it had been decided a different way?

Or is the only important thing for you about Nicea, the fact that it has the appearance to you of disunity and disagreement? Councils have never been convened over something easy to deliberate and decide upon. There’s bound to be disagreement at every council…even the one on record biblically, in Jerusalem, no? You don’t seem to mind the ‘disagreements’ evidenced there, and certainly you don’t mind the verdict. Or do you?

No, in reality there is no comparison. The RCC knows what it is doing. There are individual Catholics (who are not very Catholic) who act like Protestants.

Your comment makes no sense. If we accept the authority of the church, then we implicitly accept everything immediately without question, or else we don’t really accept the authority of the church. 🤷
You can accept the authority of something, and still have questions remain about it. This is called faith. Do you understand everything about Jesus? And yet you still have faith and follow Him. Same for Catholics…faith in Jesus AND His Church - not faith in mere humans, mind you. Faith that the teaching of faith and morals is proper and tied intimately to Christ’s own teachings, whether fully understood or not. Now, if someone rejects a doctrine of the Church, then yes, perhaps they deny the authority of the Church in that instance, and they do so at their own peril. These people do not fit the definition which I referenced above, which is someone who correctly, without bias, and properly disposed toward the will of God, reading their Bible by themselves, would recognize the authority of, and enjoin themselves to, The Catholic Church. Atleast one of those characteristics is missing in someone who would reject authentic Catholic authority.

CHESTERTONRULES;5058377:
Everybody did know, because they spoke the language. It means a gathering of people called out, which has nothing to do with submission to the Pope.
It means submission to the Church, which is led by the successor of Peter.

Unless there is a single Church, the words of Jesus would be meaningless.

Well, it seems to me to be saying that if the brother refuses to be challenged privately by one, and then privately by a few, to publicly humiliate him in the hopes it will cause him to repent.
Interesting theology. So, no effect by 2 or 3, then take him to a bigger group (say 10 or 12?), and it they can’t humiliate him enough, and cause him to listen, then cast him out. If he’s not going to listen to 2 or 3, what difference would a few more make, if they’re all saying the same thing? If none of them have authority that the brother actually recognizes, why bother?
This passage does not support the Catholic position that the Bishops are somehow the Church either. How is it that there were churches before there were Bishops? Did these churches forego the Eucharist and Confession until Timothy made his way around to appoint them? Somehow that doesn’t add up.
who said that there where churches without bishops? Peter was a bishop, and given the keys to the kingdom on earth. He and the apostles were The Church.
Secondly, Jesus is speaking to the Apostles. Who has more authority than the Apostles? If taking the matter before the church has to do with authority, the Catholic interpetation, once again, makes no sense. If however, it has to do with a public rebuke/shaming before the church in the hope that the person will repent, then it makes perfect sense.
How does it make no sense? Why would the sinful brother respond to public ‘shaming’, but not obvious authority? THAT makes no sense

Our brother Ignatius put it quite nicely. Yet, where is the Word pope in this?
“Bishop”, that’s where. The Pope is the Bishop of Rome.
Then we must wonder why Ignatius’s writings were not used as doctrine in the bible?
Oh I see. You like “brother Ignatius’ nicely put” words, but only if they are inspired from God, and Biblical? Give me a break. They’re historically confirmed words of a Catholic Bishop, most likely a disciple of John himself.
And his use of the word catholic was not intended to bring a church denomination called catholic.
No it wasn’t, you’re right. Ignatius’ words didn’t “bring” a church denomination. Rather, he intended to identify the only True Church in all of Christendom, from the time of Pentecost. That church happens to carry the same title (Catholic) as the word (catholic) represents.
Ignatius did well in the above statement to remind us that the positions of the church, the men in these positions are to be the authority.
Yes, indeed.
Yet, what is to be done when that authority teaches or preaches doctrine or interpretation of doctrine and it is contrary to the Word of God.
No worries. It doesn’t. Never has been, never will be. Amen.

I offer Jesus as the one to answer your question.

The word Church is never used in the OT. In fact, its first use comes from His mouth as he says “…I will build My Church…”

The word would be best used ONLY with regards to the entity He build that is His.

Thus NO OTHER “group(s)” which follow and might claim to be Christians can be considered His Church. They only follow Chirst (Christians) within their limits and/or the limits of the man or woman who started their group.

.👍
Sounds like there are lawyers here. The word would be best used ONLY with regards to the entity He build that is His. Thus is your interpretation, and this is where problems come because it is us humans that will attempt badly to determine who, and we are not God and we are not qualified.

Hi there,
Actually the protestants started “demoninations” in the Christian World. The Catholic Church was always the Catholic church from the time of Christ. The one true church. The rest have just splintered off in sects. No offense I am sure your heart is the right place.

God has revealed things about Himself, and His will to us. If you listened to those Christ sent, you would know the truth. If you reject those Christ sent, you also reject Christ. Those Christ sent include the Pope and Bishops in union with the Pope. The only Church established by Christ was begun with Peter as visible head Bishop, and now has Peter’s successor as visible head Bishop. The head Bishop acts as Prime Minister for the King, while the King is away seated on His Throne in Heaven. The Prime Minister is protected by the Holy Spirit from teaching error in faith and morals binding on all the faithful. This is how Christ keeps His teachings correct for us on earth (in the Church Militant). There is no other church on earth with this promise or mission from God. Christ’s Body is one, His Church is one.

Those who deny this, deny the reality that Christ created. What do we call those who are out of touch with reality? It’s not good for them, and I pray that they will come around to the beautiful truth that is Catholicism, follow Christ Who is the Head of His Mystical Body, His Bride so that we can all be one, as He and the Father are One.

**Yet, if a man does receive revelation from God, he is to go to the bishops, deacons, elders and preachers of the church so that with much prayer and suplication the revelation be deemed if of God or not. **

We are to prove and reprove all doctrine to discern if of God or not of God.

Catholics on the other hand do not move from what has already been established by their church. This becoming indoctrinated.
If this is from hte Bible, could you provide teh chapter and verse please?

Peace
James

There were Apostles in Jerusalem, there were none at Nicea. The conclusions from Nicea seem reasonable, and could be 100% correct, but they were not inspired - they were philosophy. Jesus led the Apostles into all truth in the first century. This statement from Jesus that he would do this is plain as day and anyone who says that truth continues to grow goes directly against what Jesus said.
