I’ve been wondering… are baptists, methodists, lutherans, etc. are they protestants? Or are protestants a different religion from the stated above. I’m so confused about this!! Any information about Protestants would be great 👍

by Protestant, most people mean non-catholic Christians that have developed from splits during the reformation.

Protestant never includes the Orthodox Churches, and usually doesn’t include Mormons/JW’s.

It’s stuff like non-demoninational, methodist, baptists, lutheran, episcopalian, anglican, etc etc.

Devoted: Protestants are any Christian not belonging to the Roman Catholic Church or the Eastern Orthodox Church.

Sententia: “stuff”??? I’m sure it was a mis-wording on your part. How about being a little more careful with this…try the word “faiths”… much more acceptable. 🙂

Devoted,

The answer is yes. Although I have heard members of each of these traditions deny that they are Protestants.

Strictly speaking, the Protestant churches are those established either directly because of the Reformation or which have lineal descent from them. All of the groups you mentioned would be Protestants, but Mormons often like to assert that they are NOT Protestants. Some Jehovah’s Witnesses, Pentecostals, and Christian Scientists like to say the same thing, but all three groups presuppose to a greater or lesser degree the Protestant principles of ‘Sola Scriptura’ and ‘Sola Fide’. ‘Lesser’ rather than ‘greater’ in the case of the JW’s and Christian Scientists I would say, but they still render some degree of fealty to those principles.

There is very many Protestants who are trying to deny their roots like Contarini said. Many of the newer Christian Churches have adopted a practice of saying they are Christians not Protestants.

This is very common with non-denominational Christians saying they are just regular Christians like the first Christians from the first centuries. But since most of them reject their roots many do not investigate if they really do resemble the early Church.

I have also seen some who will just say they are followers of Yeshua (some of these will even say they are not Christian) in order to feel like they are really in touch with the early Church, based of the King James version of the Bible. Most of these people call themselves Messianic Jews.

God Bless
