A Protestant who knows how Catholics use Christian artwork and sacramentals!while i don’t go in for their practices or their politics, it seems all they were doing was praying for the president and using an image of him to remind them of whom they were praying for.
not much different than icons, statues, and the like.
Charismatic Catholics…and they sum up the biggest Spiritual Gifted group around.and don’t forget that there is an entire sect within catholicism that practices the “miraculous” spiritual gifts such as tongues (yes, even “prayer languages”).
Well, Paul’s hankerchiefs were used to heal people “just” because they touched him.I don’t have a problem with speaking in tongues, provided there’s a translator. Did she have one? Didn’t watch long enough to see.
The image of her telling them what to say, to ‘lay their hands on’ a replica, well, just smacks my protestant sensibitlies wrong.
Why not just have a simple prayer for him, maybe with a pic?
I know, it’s part of their beliefs, but it just icks me.
I reiterate the ‘run, run’ statement.
I don’t see it being different than our praying in front of statues. So the CC’s would be okay doing this?
Well, God has put people in authority over us and we are to submit to them. That’s a given in both our secular lives and our religious lives. In the movie they do actually bow down prostrating themselves before the cardboard figure.
It’s sometimes difficult to discern because of course everything really depends on what is in the heart, but even though I’m not very comfortable with the whole thing. I don’t believe it rises to idolatry because they do not look to the President or the cutout as a god, nor as a helper with their salvation.
One of course should not bow down to anyone as a god. But it has happened throughout history where people have bowed to worldly leaders in respect of their worldly office. We even see cases of that in the Bible. But where people were told to worship the king, meaning not just honor his worldly office but to honor him as if he had a heavenly office, then such as in Daniel. It could only be refused, whatever the consequences.
So if in bowing, someone did for instance believe that that contributed to their salvation in some way, they would certainly be an idolater, but if you are honoring only in a worldly way, like children in some cultures may bow to their parents in recognition of the position of the parents, or to worldly rulers as is done in some cultures, then it is not idolatry. If they were to set up shrines to their departed relatives and continue to honor them and speak to them as gods, then it would be idolatry.
Early Christian of course got into trouble with the Roman Caesers who claimed not only to be a ruler of men, but god on this world. So bowing to Ceaser would be idolatry. But if an Englishman met the King and Queen and bowed to them, it would not be idolatry.
We don’t generally act like that depicted in the movie with our leaders in the US, but I don’t believe from what I could see in the movie that it rose to the level of idolatry.
Hope that makes it clear,
JJ
