If I had to pick just one song that plays in my head more than most, it would be Eliza Gilkyson’s “Requiem.”

Hymns? Way too many to list…

The Day Thou Gavest, Lord, Is Ended
Morning Has Broken
Jerusalem My Happy Home
The Holly and the Ivy

Westerby

“Be thou my vision” an Irish hymn is my #1 all time favourite hymn. Could not remeber the name when I did my first post.
Mine too, Andrew; and as a group, the Welsh hymns are my favorites. Individually, “Abide With Me”, “Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise”, and “Morning Has Broken” are favorites (though not Welsh, IIRC).

If I were choosing just one work of Christian music as a “desert island disk”, it would be Handel’s “Messiah”.

In contemporary music, it would be Rich Mullins’ “The Color Green”—rest in peace, blessed Rich, killed on this date 15 years ago; and all of Fernando Ortega’s music.

I don’t really have any favorite religious songs, for whatever reason. But I love the liturgical music you hear in the Eastern Orthodox Divine Liturgy; it gives me goose-pimples.

Episcopalian

I’m guessing you want my favorite Christian songs, not my secular stuff.

Baba Yetu - Christopher Tin (The Lord’s Prayer in Swahili)
Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing - traditional hymn
Be Thou My Vision - traditional hymn
A Mighty Fortress is Our God - hoping for a good heavy metal version
In Christ Alone - The Newsboys
You Are More - Tenth Avenue North
Give Me Your Eyes - Brandon Heath
City on the Hill - Casting Crowns
Rise - Shawn McDonald
God of this City - Bluetree (or Chris Tomlin)
Slow Train Coming - Bob Dylan

“All Creatures of our God and King”

Anything by Matt Maher, John Michael Talbot. My favorite music, however, is chant.

I chose “abide with me” for my dad’s funeral, but my wicked step-sister who does not think that anyone who is not “church of Christ” can possibly be Christian had a hillbilly accapella “song” substitued, She was always bragging how “cawntry” she is.

Lutheran, in RCIA to become Catholic

A Mighty Fortress is Our God (Ein Feste Burg ist Unser Gott)
Ave Maria
Amen song (not a favorite, but it does get stuck in your head)
Agnus Dei
Eternal Father, Strong to Save
and…

Onward Christian Soldiers.

Basically any Christian hymn made before the 1900s if it wasn’t made before the 1900s it’s no good!

Onward Christian Soldiers!! My favorite hymn in my childhood, and still a favorite today.

The three communion hymns that I like are:
  1. At The Lamb’s High Feast We Sing.
  2. The Infant Priest Was Holy Born.
  3. O Lord, We Praise Thee.

I like triumphal hymns too, but my favorite for tempo, music, and words is “Lift high the Cross”.

Curtis Mayfield, People Get Ready
Howard Hewett, Say Amen
Blackstreet, The Lord Is Real
The Commodores, Jesus Is Love

Okay I purposely choose non church songs by secular artist. The real answer, probably
Jonathan Butler’s, Falling In Love With Jesus, the best known version is on a Kirk Whalum album.

  1. Gloria
  2. Ave Maria - Andrea Bocelli
  3. Hail Holy Queen - Compasions of the lamb
  4. Steven Curtis Chapman - All about Love Album

In my parish we like singing Praise To The Holiest In The Height written by Blessed John Henry Newman, and we alsoenjoy Praise to the lord the almighty. I personally love oh the joy of the lord it goes “I give my hands to do your work and Jesus I give them willingly, I give my feet to go your way and every step I shall take cheerfully, oh the joy of the lord is my help, my help, oh the joy of the lord is my strength, my strength, for the power of his spirit is in my soul and the joy of the lord is my strength” I can’t remember the rest of the hymn! I also love Shine Jesus Shine and Hear I am Lord. During advent we sing Oh Come, Oh Come, Emmanuel. My Favourite Christmas carols are Oh Holy Night,Oh Little Town Of Bethlehem - with the end verse “where children pure and happy pray to the blessed child and misery cries out to thee son of the Mother mild, where charity stands watching and faith holds wide the door, the dark night wakes the glory breaks and Christmas comes once more”, it always reminds me of my childhood and makes me feel christmassy!, and Once In Royal David’s City - very calm and gentle. My Mum’s favourite hymn is colours of day and my Granny’s favourite carol is God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.
