We all know that when Jesus ( I prefer to call him the Christ or Christ, or Messiah. Would you call a king by his first name…to his face? I suppose that is a topic for another thread! 😃 ) was on the cross, about ready to give up his spirit to the Father, he exclaimed. “Father, why hast thou forsaken me…” My question is WHY? Why did Christ say this as he was about to die? Any and all explainations are welcome. Thank you.

God Bless!

The short answer is “No, I cannot answer this.” Fool that I am, I am not quite foolish enough to presume that I, as a mere mortal, am capable of understanding the motivations of an infinite God.

The words are a quotation from Psalm 22:1, the words of the suffering servant. It has been suggested that he may have been reacting, in his humanity, to the separation between himself and the Father which resulted from his having taken the sin of the world upon himself.

Thank you Devil. I appreciate your answer. I would also empore you to come back home to Rome. You do know the truth and I pray for you. Come back, there will be no questions asked when you return. God Bless.

S. Eric,

I don’t know exactly what Mystophilus said, but devil doesn’t sound too nice a way to address anyone. And I don’t think name calling is a way to change peoples minds. Also after looking at your profile I wonder are you in communion with Rome or SSPX? No accusation, just a question.

As for the main question, I don’t know the reasoning for him saying that line, but I’ve heard that the Psalm starts out dispaired and ends with the author joyfull. So maybe that has something to do with it. A pslam of hope?

Mystophilus is a name for the devil. Hence the reply, “thank you devil.” His/her own screen name is “devil.”

Mephistopheles is the name of the devil who appears in Goethe’s Faust. The name possibly derives from the Latin term ‘mephitis’, referring to foul volcanic vapours, and, hence, to the smoking underworld of classical myth.

I could hardly complain about being associated with such magnificent art, but I must, unfortunately, admit that the association is not justified.

He was simply quoting Psalm 22. read the full chapter there.

or

God the Father, laid on him the sins of all us ( Isaiah 53 ) and the Father could not look on him at that “time”. This could be symbolized by the darkness that came upon the earth.
