While honoring the Church’s sacrament of reconciliation, one can not deny the power and also the ability of individuals to forgive sins. I’m not protestant, but in the perfect world the priest performs a vital function of of being the ultimate neutral party when trying to understand confessions and making the contrite person whole by offering remedies in the form of perscribed contritions. However…we don’t live in a perfect world, sadly, as the modern priest is too busy and pre-occupied with other more pressing things, IMHO, which brings me back to the original point of the power of individuals to forgive others…not trying to be contentious, as we all should desire the perfect world as mapped out by the sacraments of the Church to include that of reconciliation, so I am not put off too much about the protestant not being on the same page as the Church’s sacraments outline. If one can seek out and take advantage of a mature and prepared priest to act as that neutral and wise spirit-filled healer of a priest, more power to them, but I don’t rely too much on that happening to me. Maybe I’m too cynical and too much a realist here, which maybe what Protestantism is all about, so much so one can miss out on what the Holy Spirit has to offer. It’s so hard to be humble, eh?
