Protestants: What Do You Admire About Catholics?

If you had to make a list of things you admire about the Catholic People and their faith, what would you put on that list?

If you had to make a list of things you admire about the Catholic People and their faith, what would you put on that list?

I admire the fact that the Church has protected the deposit of faith quite well for 2000 years (excepting the doctrines related to Mary).

I admire the fact that the Church has shown the ability to self-correct (you can talk about the sinners who have made up/led the Church on occasion all you want, but in the end, the truth seems to have prevailed).

I admire the Church’s stand on moral/ethical issues and the fact that the Church doesn’t compromise.

I respect the practice of confession

I like the idea of RCIA–Membership is a serious matter and the Church takes initiation of new members seriously (analogous in a way to Marine Corps bootcamp–the real purpose of bootcamp is to inculcate potential Marines with the values we hold dear–I assume RCIA serves much the same purpose).

If you had to make a list of things you admire about the Catholic People and their faith, what would you put on that list?

1. The Church’s uncompromising defense of Christological and Trinitarian Orthodoxy.
2. Rome’s preservation of the historic Christian liturgy.
3. The passion with which it defends the rights of the unborn, elderly, and disabled.
4. The resources it provides worldwide to the poor and oppressed (no other body or institution can ever compare)
5. It’s preservation of the doctrines of the Real Presence and baptismal regeneration.

I admire the strength of those who are in dissent and have the courage to stay and fight for what they believe is right. It is a thankless position to be in no doubt and I witness plenty of religious and clergy with the courage to stand up and say this is wrong. It’s much easier to just leave for a faith that is more in line with your beliefs than to stay and carry on.

I admire the willingness of the Church to stand firm on difficult issues and its protection of the integrity of the gospel.

I appreciate its compassion to other Christians, and those of other faiths still seeking the truth.

I’m praying for its continued patience and willingness to welcome home rebellious children when they finally return with true repentance and understanding, as the father did with the prodigal son and its generous dispensation of grace through the sacraments.

6. The fact that their catechism addresses modern issues, unlike my Lutheran one which hasn’t been updated to include criticisms of modern political herecies.

10. The fact that they see other Christian churches as ‘seperated brethren’, rather than seeing tham as ‘wicked heretics who will go to hell’.

I’ll pray for all the poor, misguided Catholics who do not understand the teachings of Christ properly. I pray that they may renounce their sinful ways, and with the help of Christ, come to embrace the ENTIRE Sacred Deposit of Faith.

I’ll pray for all the poor, misguided Catholics who do not understand the teachings of Christ properly. I pray that they may renounce their sinful ways, and with the help of Christ, come to embrace the ENTIRE Sacred Deposit of Faith.

I’ll agree with you that one can’t defeat the Holy Spirit. But how can you have confidence you are properly understanding the Holy Spirit? There are now well over 30,000 different Protestant denominations, many of which are in disagreement on critical issues of doctrine and scripture interpretation,and all, or virtually all claim, to have the benefit of the interpretation of the Holy Spirit.

The Catholic Church, however, is true to the tradition of the original apostles with interpretation handed down and taught through apostolic succession - the teachings of the Church today being consistent with those of the earliest recorded Church fathers tracing their authority back to the apostles. As Christ empowered the Apostles to guide his flock and teach his disciples, what makes you think that the protestant ministers and theologeons who have now reinterperted doctrine are actually following the Holy Spirit rather than the Church which has preserved original teaching? Didnt’ Peter in fact warn that Paul’s writings are difficult to understand and that many would come an misterpret his writings and teachings? (Sounds freighteningly like the reformation).

See 2 peter 3:16
speaking of this as he does in all his letters. There are some things in them hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other scriptures.

I’m a Protestant who is coming/has come to the truth.

oops - my bad - I misread the post I replied to as suggesting the Catholic Church does not have the Holy Spirit which appears to be contra to the intent of the post (so sorry). My post can stand as a statement for the power of the Holy Spirit in the Catholic Church (though not as an appropriate response to the prior post)

That they don’t talk in tongues incessantly, roll up and down the aisles in church and have church services that are hours upon hours long. Beyond that, there isn’t anything really. I’m Anglican so I already have an appreciation for the liturgies and a structured worship.
