Protestants: What is the oddest thing about Catholicism?

:crying:

I have mentioned this before…From the exploring thread.

I am a 28 year old woman, who was baptized Catholic. My mother and father never took us to church. But she prayed alot and used to have the priest bless our house. She sent me to Catholic School in 1st grade. I hated it. The children were mean. I let that influence my opinion of the Catholic church. Then I messed up in school in 7th grade and my mother(knowing that I hated Catholic School)sent me to Catholic school as a punishment. I never got confirmed or my Holy Communion. My fondest memory of praying as a little girl, was that I prayed Catholic. I asked my mom, if I really desire something that is unselfish, what should I do? (I wanted twin sisters at the time, I had seen a show about twins, I thought that was great) I prayed for 2 sisters. God answered that prayer . I remember that and I find that I am looking to the Catholic Church. My one sister went to Catholic School and got her Holy Communion and Baptism done. The other twin got her baptism, Holy Communion, and Confirmation done. I feel closer to God when I pray on the Rosary.

Exploring the many religions has made me confused. I know that I believe in the Trinity. So I knew that any Non-Trinitarian churches were out of the question. I believe that Baptism is to enter in the family of Christ. I don’t believe in the doctrine, once saved always saved. Which is why I never allowed another church to baptize me, I knew I had gotten that done as a baby. I love worshipping God by singing. I went to Mass and didn’t notice too much singing, which sort of lead me to study a non-denominational church.

I’ve lead a life of pain, through the years. Sinning “mortally”(as Catholics would say) I got an abortion:eek: . I’ve repented. I have bought the NIV bibles and the Catholic Bibles. I want to do comparative studies. I asked my mom why she chose the Catholic religion. Not that she was devout, I plan to be devout to the church I choose. I do not believe that someone who is a Christian, but not Catholic would go to hell automatically because they are not Catholic. I find that a bit presumptive. It is sad that Catholics and Christians fight so much on the forum. She said because parts of the Other Christian demoninations, had practices that originated from the Catholics.

But my mother probably was considered what Catholics called feminist. She never had the sex talk, until it was too late. She always said don’t bring a baby to my house. If you do, you will not have it. she kept her word with that on my sister, who at 13 didn’t want to have one, but got one for my mohter’s peace of mind. I never dared tried it while living with her. She just pretty much said “abortion isn’t birth control” so if you are going to do your business, then use something. I was 12 when I lost my innocence. 😦 I wish she would of had that talk with me. I am not sure it would of made a difference. But I didn’t know it was a sin until it was too late. By then I was damaged goods. As my father would put it. My teens were pretty much promiscuous. I had partners in my early twenties. At one point, I had about four, then I got pregnant, I was told that it would be difficult to get pregnant because I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and I was using protection(condoms). i lived with my father at the time, I was sooooooo scared to tell him about my situation, because I knew he would judge me(not for the pregnancy, but for no knowing who the father was, he is an old fashioned hispanic man) To him, a woman’s worth equals the amount of partners she did and didn’t have.
So I had a abortion. There were protesters there. I was so angry at these people. They didn’t know my delema, but they were telling me how to lead my life. Out of the partners I had one stood by me through the ordeal. He was supportive of me and made me realize that I could be loved for more than my sexuality. I didn’t regret the abortion right after it happened. But now as I am getting older. I was wondering what could have been and how selfish I was. I was told to the by the GYN to use the BC Pill for the PCOS and the after treatment of the abortion. i didn’t know that I was still aborting babies by using the pill or any contraception. Being taught about this from a young age, I thought I was preventing a pregnancy from occuring, but not through abortion. So imagine my surprise, when I am told that I committed murder all over again :crying: I saw photos of what happened to the babies and started begging God for His forgiveness.

I married that man who stood by me wo months ago. He is also an athiest. After being married, I asked myself, how am i going to raise the children, when and if I could have them? I knew that was important as well as the responsibiliy of it. He said that I will be in charge of raising the children in the religion of my choice. I thank God for that. However, he doesn’t want children right away. i did. He wants to buy a bigger house first So I trained myself not to want to have kids either. 😦 . He will not touch me, unless He knows I will not get pregnant. Which is being fulfilled through my pill. Maybe he will consider the NFP. I am very confused. You guys are right 👍 I thought I was strange for wanting to start a family. :crying: Sorry if I seemed insensitive. I am trying to figure out things.

This information is scaring me: Oral contraception (the pill): Headaches, depression, weight gain, reduced libido, gall bladder disease, increased blood pressure, increased blood sugar, risk of strokes and blood clots, heart attacks, infertility, liver tumors, cancer of the breast and reproductive organs, death.
This here is really really scaring me Abortion: Infertility, pelvic infection, laceration of cervix and bowel, perforated uterus, severe bleeding, shock, death due to hemorrhage or infection, increased risk of breast cancer (especially if first pregnancy is terminated), depression.

I didn’t know most of these side effects.
Oh my goodness! Of course you didn’t know, how could you no one would sit down and talk to you and the ones you needed to talk with weren’t there. I pray Jesus wraps His arms around you now as you pray. I think it would be OK to give your lost baby a name and know that his/her angel took him/her to heaven. pray to the angel as you have repented and are forgiven so let the Love of Christ wash over your soul, and take away the guilt. Jesus is holding your baby in his arms now until you can join Him, now live your life as an example for him/her . Your example may change your atheist spouse. Blessings I also am going to Mass tomorrow and will add you to my prayers.

inJESUS;3737271:
“Belief” in doctrines and dogmas are of little use when they do not produce a life which mirrors Christ.
True… but the reason we adhere to doctrines/dogmas and receive Sacraments is because they DO - if followed - produce a life which mirrors Christ…
Christ Experienced and lived in and through us is more important to us than what is believed about Him.
Not true… What if you believed tht Jesus didn’t love all persons… what if one of those persons was YOU?? I used to believe (feel) that Jesus didn’t love me. I felt that way because no one else had ever loved me, from Mother on down… but i was wrong… It was the Catholic Church that taught me, and in no merely intellecutal way… that I was WRONG… !!
walk in the Light as He is in the Light", is more important than “believeing” what a particular priest or minister teaches…“Truth” is something to be lived out before all to see
An how are we going to know the truth if we are not taught it… and who better to teach than a priest who has spent 8+ yrs in education and spiritual training??
“Though I speak with the tongue of men and angles, and know all mysteries and have all knowledge…without love…it avails me nothing.”
It was the sacraments and other htings about the Church that caused me to “love”… I could just as easily say to this… “though i speak with the tongues of … angels… and know all… without the Catholic Church that Christ established, I would be lost…”

I would NOT be a strong Christian… or a Christian at all if it weren’t for the Church… if i was not a -catechized Roman Catholic…

If you don’t know this answer, you should really look at a science book.
Well, then it is true that you know that it’s a human embryo.

BTW, personhood is a legal, not a scientific determination.

I’m wondering why, when you know that the embryo is a living human being, you choose to deny it personhood.

Brothers, this is a loooooong thread, please read Carjack’s long post on the last page and praise the Lord !!

It is not a nice try, It is the truth.
“Nice try, it is because the “CHILD” is correctly recognized as a human being.”

The person who kills the mother and the baby is charged with 2 murders. He isn’t charged with denying someone a choice. Well, unless you say that he denied both persons the right to choose life. 😉

People aren’t charged with murder for taking choices away.

FWIW, the pro-choice movement people are usually against the double murder charges, because they know it legally recognizes that the unborn baby is a person w/ the right to life.

yes we are. but once we are born, we are no longer embryos.
I don’t agree with your concept of a “person”. According to Luke shortly after Mary was visited by the Angel Gabriel she went to visit her cousin who had been pregnant for a longer time. The baby in her cousin’s womb “leaped for joy” upon Mary’s presence. Now if the embyro of Jesus was not a person at the time, with soul and divinity, why would the baby “John” have “leaped” for joy? At what point in the process of becoming a person in the womb does the embryo get a soul? Could be at the time of impregnation. In fact with other animals as well as humans, it most likely is at the time of conception. I am not sure I agree with everything the Catholic faith professes, yet I cannot argue with this one. That’s why the act of sexual intercourse should be considered something sacred too, not just a convenience to “feel good”.

I really feel for you and for all women who have been/are lied to about abortion and all t he bad effects that result from it… As i have said before… it is terrible tht China has forced abortion but i think that America has forced abortion also… because women are pushed up against the wall when they are pregnant in an un-timely way… they are told by this or that person that there is no other way “out”… they are not given info on adoption, etc… this is a form of subtle coercion - and sometimes not so subtle… so i feel they are being forced…

any other major surgical type procedure is explained to the patient in great detail… but because abortion is so lucrative… (abortionists make more $ than any doctor except brain surgeons)… there is this conspiracy to keep all important info from the patient… and keep abortion legal…

I pray that you are not sterile… Another thing most people don’t know is that in 30% of abortions, the woman is rendered infertile…

God bless…

That is a really scary statistic. I was told in the clinic, that a would could get up to 4 without a problem:eek: One was bad enough, who want to get 4? Thanks for the info.

I haven’t participated in this particular abortion discussion, but my only comments…

I really need to ask for forgiveness, and an open mind. Although I DO NOT agree with abortions, I need to remember that it’s not always so black and white and that many women who have abortions are just simply put in really difficult situations that I cannot begin to understand. Again, I still totally disagree with abortions, but instead of getting so angry and judgmental, I need to instead pray for these people.

I, too, will be praying for you Carjack.

. As I read your posts, it seemed you were implying that Catholic women are nothing more than baby factories. I wanted to attempt to clear up the confusion.
I am one Catholic woman who wishes I was a baby factory… 🙂

I just haven’t found a Mr. Right to help my factory be productive… 😃

Plus, Worst of all:
i may be too old… :crying: :crying:

:hug3: Dear Carjack,
I’m sorry for everything that has happened to you. Our debates can get quite heated, but don’t feel that you were being judged.
Boy, if I had to admit to some of the things I’ve done wrong!! Im sure most others on the forum would have some tales, too. So who are we to judge you?
You are among supportive people here.
Did you know that the Catholic Church offers counseling for people who have had abortions? I believe that it’s in a group setting. But you could also make an app’t w/ a priest.
Having had an abortion must be tough. Know that everyone here is praying for your healing.
Oh! Congrats on your wedding! 🙂

Adam14:
Adam 14: You don’t see a difference between being with God outside the Church and being with Him (Jesus) IN the Church because you are not Catholic… I know what it is like to be with God, alone in nature… it is wonderful, but there is something far more… powerful, more personal… (etc, etc…) about being with Jesus in the Real Presence… I know you may not understand this & may get angry… but a person who has never spent time with Jesus There, at theBlessed Sacrament, does not know Jesus… ( very well)…

I was raised Catholic from birth… then got catechized several yrs ago… I probably would not, myself, know now about the Real Presence in the Church if it had not been for a good priest telling me several yrs go… … 🙂

I used to live near this hospital that had the Real Presence in a chapel inside…
a peson can’t do this anymore because they changed their security but at one time, i was able to spend enitre nights with Jesus There…🙂 i can’t even begin to put inot words all that i experienced while There… being with, and sleeping near Jesus… (except to say it was the best, most interesting sleep i’ve ever had…) . In fact, jus writing about it now makes me feel… SO sad that i can no longer do this…

You ought to try it sometimes… It isn’t always a walk in the park, especially in the beginning when you begin to see things (or i do) that, well, how can i say it? The first 30 min. or so, i usually see all the gunk that has accumulated in my soul/heart/mind from having been in the dirty world… Jesus washes it off… (of course)…

Well, i am exhausted  from trying to put something so mysterious and beyond words into words… so i wil leave it at that…

They sure know how to lie at those “clinics”… I protested a 'clinic" once and they flipped usthe bird through the windows, threw their coffee at us… swore at us… etc… If anyone had a hard time choosing who was “right”, well, that kind of behavior says something by itself…

Anyway, ofcourse they are not going to tell you anything that would keep you out of the clinic…
I have heard of women who have had more than one abortion having children later… but then i have known of many women who had only ONe and were sterile… for life… A young woman with her whole life ahead of her may not think she wants children, but as she gets older (& hopefully wiser…) she can change her mind…
Also, legalized abortion is really not much safer than when it was not legal… Many women die from abortion but it is not always written in the death report as such (long story…)…
Anyway, I really pray you have not been damaged permanently & can have other children. I also hope you take one poster’s advice about giving the child a name, syaing goodbye to him or her… tell the child you are sorry… I’ve heard there is a lot of healing in that…

Ok time to get back to the topic at hand…abortion has been discussed ad nauseum on other threads

I am a Catholic but I was Protestant for 24 years, so here goes

I have a problem or find it “odd” that the Catholic church will accept and recognize baptisms from other churches as long as they are done in the name of the trinity but will not recognize or accept marriages done in other churches, even though they are both sacraments and very important.

My problem is that, according to the Church, if you are married outside of the CC then your marriage is INVALID and if you have sexual relations with your spouse you are in mortal sin and considered a fornicator

So if you follow logically…anyone married outside of the Church are fornicators and are going to die in mortal sin and go to hell…b/c according to the CC if you die in mortal sin you go to hell

But i have seen countless times on this thread and other places Catholics saying they can’t determine that Protestants or others are going to Hell b/c they don’t know.

Doesn’t make sense to me b/c if you follow the logic the Catholic Church is saying they are going to hell, and my entire family of protestants weren’t married and fornicated.

In my opinion this is a bunch of bull.

Again, thanks for your reply. I’m not too offended ;). Really, I’m still trying to figure out exactly what I believe as far as the details. I’m still not sure about the True Presence, but I assume that if I was in total agreement with it, I’d also be spending as much time as possible with Jesus, in person. And don’t get me wrong, I’d really love to spend time with Him in person. Maybe He will lead me to understand the True Presence, but I still haven’t figured it all out yet (but really, has anybody  )

Odd, my understanding is that two Protestants that are Baptized are in a Sacramental Marriage.
I think perhaps you may be referring to two Baptized Catholics who may not get Married in the Catholic Church, right?
Or perhaps to a Catholic and a Protestant who marry outside of the Catholic Church, but, two Baptized Protestants is a totally different story from my understanding.
