Protestants - When did the Catholic Church Begin?

Not all Baptists. There are a number of scholarly Baptists who know quite well that this sort of Baptist “history” is silly, and say so: Leon McBeth, Timothy George, D. H. Williams, or my old friend Scott McGinnis, just to name a few.

Most “rank and file” members of any church have pretty confused ideas about church history. One reason these ideas are so prominent among Baptists is that Baptists put a lot of stress on what ordinary people believe, and don’t give a high place to either clerical or scholarly authority. So these half-baked ideas play a much bigger role among Baptists than among either Catholics or more traditional Protestants.

Of course not all baptist. I said a baptist, singular.

But you follow it up with “their” history…plural. Instead of “his” history…singular.
Maybe he should have said, “but those that follow their history…”. In any event, we know that Baptists don’t all fall into this same “history re-write” theory, maybe that’s why we don’t feel the need to clarify this statement. In the future, I’ll try and be more careful. Maybe Manny will, too.

Jesus said, “…thou art Peter and upon this Rock I build my Church…”

That says it all. Christ still walked the earth while in his Ministry. He appeared to His Church after His Resurrection from the dead. This give the Church the title of “Bride of Christ” and we are her children.

It is HIS Church founded by HIM. There is no other that has that designation.

I haven’t seen a protestant post yet in this thread. I guess they have nothing to say. 👍

It could be argued that the Catholic Church as we now know it was born in Vatican 2, and has had numerous rebirths, including the Counter Reformation with the Council of Trent.

My thought is that it most originally conceived with the filioque clause as it began to separate from the Eastern Church, but I doubt there is a single moment in time.

That is my view, and I find some civil Catholics, especially among my friends, but some others seem insecure, as though they feel personally responsible for defending Catholicism. I am not an anti-Catholic, but I would never waste my time defending Protestantism either. Both have really spotty histories.

I’d rather proclaim the kingdom of God, which Catholics equate to the church, but I do not.

The Catholic Church did not “separate” itself from any Church. The Eastern Church left the Roman Catholic Church.

Everybody makes that claim. It may never be resolved, because there are so many “true” churches.

In fact, the very proposition that one did not separate from the other is impossible. And the Roman and Eastern churches were not the only permutations even pre-Reformation.

That is why I proclaim the kingdom of God. That’s the foundation of the church, and that which has always existed.

Who are you to proclaim anything? Who gave you the authority? You don’t have any authority! There is no authority outside Christ’s Church.

They asked Jesus the same thing, so I figure I’m in good company! 🙂

Only Pharisees were bent out of shape. Otherwise, people were pretty happy.

Comparing one’s self to Christ, wow. What arrogance.

That’s why there are over 30,000 protestant sects/denominations, as everyone thinks they are Christ and creates their own Church or think they can create a Church better than Christ Himself did. Or they simply want to create a church or shop for a Church that fits their own beliefs.

In the end, it doesn’t matter what anyone’s beliefs are! It only matters what Christ’s truths are. And for me, I would never go against the Church that Christ Himself established.

Wow! I’m still in good company–they said the same things about my Lord!

Still, I find some civil Catholics, especially among my friends, but some others seem insecure, as though they feel personally responsible for defending Catholicism. I am not an anti-Catholic, but I would never waste my time defending Protestantism either. Both have really spotty histories.

You mean we were left here unable to identify the true Church??
We were left here to identify the kingdom of God which has always been and always shall be. (Not confused, but there’s no icon for that).

You want to go easy on Ahem, there? I’m not sure if he’s really here to start a fight or anything.

Thanks–I certainly wasn’t intentionally trying to be argumentative. Just expressing my heart.

Like I said, I won’t waste my breath defending Eastern, Western, Reformation, Coptic, or any other expression of the church. I don’t feel the need to be defensive.

For me, who at one time in my life couldn’t say this (I was young and combative), it is wonderfully liberating to not be against any expression of the God’s kingdom. I enthusiastically refer to those who identified with historic Catholicism–among my heroes are Aquinas, Pedro Claver, et al. But I also appreciate everyone from Chrysostom, to MLK, to Desmond Tutu, all from very different traditions, and in my view, pillars of the one true church, ambassadors of the kingdom of God.

First Post on this site.

Think about this in a completely historical sight. There was no reason to define Christianity as Catholic, Orthodox or Protestant until the Schism and the Reformation. Until then everyone who was a Christian was a member of the Roman Church. The term Catholic had to be adopted to define the True Church from those who fallen away.
