Protestants.. Why are you saved? What does it mean to be saved?

I’ll start…

I believe God. I have confessed that Jesus is Lord, the Son of God who paid for my sins with His own blood on the cross. I believe in my heart that God raised Him from the dead. I repent from sin. The old man (Adam’s sin nature) that I used to be is now crucified with Christ. I am raised with Christ and now seeking those things which are above. I am born-again spiritually with Christ living in me. I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. I now love God with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength. I also love others. Because God is a spirit, I worship in spirit and truth. I do not forsake the assembling of believers so I go to church to give praise, honor, and glory to God along with other believers. Raising holy hands, praying without wrath and unbelief. When I leave church, I walk by faith and not by sight, I walk in love, not by word alone but deed also. I study the Word of God to show myself approved unto God building my most Holy faith praying in the Holy Ghost. I watch for the coming of our Master. Watching so His return does not overtake me like a thief in the night. Also, I preach the Gospel of salvation to those who will listen.

I’m not worried because I’m watching for Him. However, He will come like a thief in the night for those who are not watching. I’ve been preparing myself for the coming of the Lord. But my heart is “heavy” because many people don’t believe He is coming soon and will be left behind to enter the tribulation. They are not watching and waiting for His return.

Why are you watching for Him? He didn’t ask you to watch for Him. He asked you to “watch out” for yourself.

I don’t think it’s possible to know if one is saved by the testimony of St. Paul’s own direct words towards us regarding salvation. Knowing we are saved is something which will happen on Judgment day, and Judgment day alone.

Eph 2:10 For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

What does it mean?

Rom 8:15 For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”
Rom 8:16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. (NIV)

I am saved because of Jesus’ suffering and sacrifice on the cross. Although worthy of damnation I am able to benefit from this sacrifice God’s free garce accepted through faith. I will remain saved as long as I remain faithful. How can I tell if I am being faithful? By repenting and asking forgiven for sins and by the way I act. If I am not trying to love God and my neighbour then I do not have saving faith. At any particular time we should be confident as to whether we are saved or not. John tells us:

These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life. 1 John 5:13

While our actions cannot merit salvation, if we rightly judge ourselves, we should be confident as to whether or not we are saved. If we try to justify ourselves by saying “I am doing good enough”, then there is a problem.

We hope for the grace to be faithful to the end.
