Protestants: Why Your Denomination?
Well, I’m Catholic now, but I spent most of my life as a some sort of Anglican (originally Episcopal (PECUSA) and later part of a “traditional” Anglican movement).

I honestly believed that the Anglican church was the “true” Catholic Church (and I considered myself a “Catholic”). I believed that the RCC had introduced new doctrines into traditional Catholic theology. The “new doctrine” that I especially objected to was Papal infallibility (which was not formally defined until Vatican I in 1868).

I fancied myself as an “Anglican apologist,” so I undertook to disprove the Catholic Church’s claim that She has never invented, deleted, or changed any doctrine. Surely this could not be said for this “new” doctrine about the Pope (and which is singularly opposed to all things Anglican).

Alas, I discovered that this “new” doctrine was quite old. Almost 2,000 years old, in fact. Going straight back to Peter. In all of my efforts to disprove this “new” doctrine, I finally realized it was actually true.

From there, everything else that was distinctly Anglican began to crumble.

But, back to the point: Had you asked me this question some 20 years ago, I would have told you that the Catholic Church had departed from the authentic Catholic Faith (because She had introduced novel doctrines), and that “true” Catholicism existed only in the traditional Anglican movement. Buy I suppose that’s essentially what all protestants claim.

Kinda silly, but that’s what I would have said.

Most low-church Protestants do NOT believe that their denomination is The Church or The Way to get to Heaven. Important aside-we don’t actually believe that the Church is the Way to Heaven, as Jesus taught that He is the Way, the Truth and the Life-what we believe is that He entrusted this treasure to the Church and She is the normal method of incorporating us into His Body) Most protestants simply do not have that kind of ecclesiology at all, and would in fact deny that Jesus established a visible Church. Rather they will tell you that the Church is invisible, made up of all those who are saved (some but not all would add baptized).

Most Protestants (even Lutherans and Anglicans, who do have an ecclesiology) choose the local “church” community they join by a process of attending numerous local churches until they find one where the teaching matches what they already believe and the style (eg. form of worship, availability of social activities, youth ministry, etc) suits their taste/lifestyles/needs. This is a deeper process than the parish-shopping some Catholics do when they move, as the low-church Protestant communions are locally autonomous and thus the theology can vary dramatically from one congregation/preacher to another, even if they are nominally part of the same denomination.

My own parents (who were converted from mainstream non-personal Christianity at a Billy Graham crusade) were Covenanters when I was born but by the time I was old enough to form memories they had moved and become Baptists. Later we moved again and they found an evangelical Congregational church which they joined, although I found a Baptist church in the next town where I was more at home – until, praise be to Our Lord, I stumbled over the Rock and began my journey Home to Rome. . . .

The invisible church is the body of Christ - all true believers world way. The visible church is the local congregation.

Anyway, being Baptist is the very best, the fullness of the truth.

Most Protestants don’t believe that their denomination is “The Church.” You misunderstand Protestant ecclesiology.

Why do you believe your denomination is the best and the fullness of truth?

Protestant: Why do you believe your denomination is either the one that is true, or the one that is being lead by the Holy Spirit, or simply putting it, the true way Christ?*
