Wirraway and Agabus--------I am laughing out loud at your wit and dry humor–and it’s 1am my time! 😃
Why is it that people are saying Luther “broke away”------he was excommunicated. Just a small detail here.
Yes, ultimately, Rome wanted nothing to do with Luther or his teachings. It was either submit or you’re out of here. And some tried to “take him out” altogether, but by the grace of God they failed.

He was well out of the Church long before he was excommunicated.

It’s not like he was following Church teachings faithfully, living his life as a monk, saying his prayers, etc., and then suddenly BAM! they excommunicated him for no reason so then he started up the Lutheran Church.

He had already written his famous essay on why the Pope is the Antichrist before he was excommunicated; he didn’t actually get excommunicated until it was very clear that his problem was not theology; his problem was obedience.

Well there was a reason for that, he should have been obedient to the true church if christ.

How was it a good thing? Would you like to tell me how the catholic church could be wrong? what other churches were around? (that werent in communion with rome?) jesus clearly started the catholic church. luther disobeyed god.

Sweetie-pie: tell me where you’re getting your knowledge of Luther’s life?

Hi

I just don’t get it at all. I mean, come on, there was not even a protestant church until Luther, and that was only 500 years ago. Protestantism has been around for a 1/4 of what Catholicism has, and yet protestants act as though their religion has been around for such a long time. Many talk bad about Catholics for no reason, and never have any idea what they are talking about. Besides Luther, what caused all this? How do people get convinced so easily that somehow the church that was the one and only church for so long was all of a sudden wrong, just because a man said so? Im sorry if i have offended any protestants, but if this is the case…just ask yourself if it makes one bit of sense.
I think it has to do a lot with what Bishop Fulton Sheen said: “People don’t hate the Catholic Church, but they hate what they think is the Catholic Church.” I know this to be very true, growing up one of the few Catholics in a small Southern Baptist town. I can remember going to school dances and being the only one able to actually dance. :dancing:

And I don’t think coleraine would get taken behind the woodshed if he debated any protestant. He’s got all the knowledge he needs right here at his fingertips. He’s also got 2000 years of solid truth to back him up.

Being raised a Lutheran, I won’t raise the hair on your necks by what I was taught-------but instead I can refer to the (I guess totally anti-Catholic) Compton’s encyclopedia…?

Listen, I’m on your side here…I am looking into becomingCatholic, so PLEASE DO NOT harass me. Please ONLY GET THE HISTORY CORRECT FROM AS MANY SOURCES AS POSSIBLE, and not ONE only and hearsay from those who are looking only to defend their viewpoint or what they were taught, and they were taught, and they were taught, etc. Please do not bring light to your own white-knuckled viewpoints with arrogance, IT BENEFITS NO ONE HERE. Please look to the history writings of many. Kids screaming, gotta go.

but look, when it comes to this, such views do not matter. Many people have many different reasons to think something. but luther divided christianity. he went against christ’s true church. Jesus built one church, and no matter what, it is wrong to go against it like luther did.

Luther sought to reform the Catholic Church’s apostacy from Apostolic doctrine, but was not heard. The Diet of Worms, case and point.

Actually Luther apostacized from the Church with his novel concepts of Sola Scriptura and Sola Fide, which were completely unknown to any Christian (Catholic or Orthodox) prior to Luther’s revolt of 1517.
Yes there were problems in the church with morals and lax clergy. Bishop Sheen wrote that the Reformation reformed doctrine when it was morals that needed reforming. But Luther was a very prideful man and took a “my way or the highway” attitude. Instead of helping to reform the Church from the inside with prayer and humility, Luther decided to follow in the footsteps of Korah.

Did not John Calvin exact some revenge on Michael Servetus, who had written some criticisms in Calvin 's book “Institutes of the Christian Religion,” vowing that if Servetus ever came to Geneva, “I will never let him depart alive, if I have any authority” and that when Servetus arrived in Geneva to hear Calvin speak Calvin had him arrested and tried for heresy then burned at the stake?

so…he wanted to remove the apostolic history? thats madness. he should have been burnt at the stake.

You are a Calvinist, right? Did not John Calvin exact some revenge on Michael Servetus, who had written some criticisms in Calvin 's book “Institutes of the Christian Religion,” vowing that if Servetus ever came to Geneva, “I will never let him depart alive, if I have any authority” and that when Servetus arrived in Geneva to hear Calvin speak Calvin had him arrested and tried for heresy then burned at the stake?

As for Luther: When he debated the Eucharist with Ulrich Zwingli, did not Luther insist that Christ’s words, “This is my body” (1 Cor. 11:24) refers to Christ’s real presence and must be interpreted literally rather than metaphorically (Zwingli said it was a symbol)? Because of this difference Zwingli did not get political support and he was eventually killed in battle with other Swiss Protestants.

So, what can we derive from the Calvin, Zwingli, and Luther approaches?

my question,

are those Independent Christian Churches, part of Protestantism?
