Dear friends in Christ,

Is knowing “of” Jesus the same as “knowing who and what Jesus are?” Are both necessary?

There are only two types of people who can actually “Know God” according the the late

Can this be true?

Both necessary for what?

The set of people that "know who and what Jesus are” also contain a subset of people that “know of Jesus.”

The set of people that that “know of Jesus” does not contain the whole subset of people that "know who and what Jesus are.”

Some folks know of Jesus – Oh yeah that guy in the bible yeah sure I heard of him, but they don’t know Who He is.

Some folks know Who He is – and by knowing Who He is must then know of Him.

I am unfamiliar with Archbishop Fulton Sheen’s quote or body of work so I cannot remark on it.

Hi, and thanks for the reply:thumbsup:

I am vague by specific intent to allow folks to resond to the OPQ in what ever manner they deem approiate. The goal of life is salvation right?

This being so, what kind of knowledge and understanding of God must one have in order to accomplish this task?

Love and prayers,

No. The goal of life is to seek to know God. If our goal is salvation, then we act as God. Salvation is His gift to give, not ours to demand, work for, or attempt to take.

From the Catechism Of The Catholic Church

PROLOGUE

“FATHER, . . . this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.” (John 17:3) “God our Savior desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” (1 Tim 2:3-4) “There is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12) - than the name of JESUS.

I. THE LIFE OF MAN - TO KNOW AND LOVE GOD

1 God, infinitely perfect and blessed in himself, in a plan of sheer goodness freely created man to make him share in his own blessed life. For this reason, at every time and in every place, God draws close to man. He calls man to seek him, to know him, to love him with all his strength. He calls together all men, scattered and divided by sin, into the unity of his family, the Church. To accomplish this, when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son as Redeemer and Savior. In his Son and through him, he invites men to become, in the Holy Spirit, his adopted children and thus heirs of his blessed life.

2 So that this call should resound throughout the world, Christ sent forth the apostles he had chosen, commissioning them to proclaim the gospel: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age.” (Matt. 28:19-20) Strengthened by this mission, the apostles “went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by the signs that attended it.” (Mark 16:20)

3 Those who with God’s help have welcomed Christ’s call and freely responded to it are urged on by love of Christ to proclaim the Good News everywhere in the world. This treasure, received from the apostles, has been faithfully guarded by their successors. All Christ’s faithful are called to hand it on from generation to generation, by professing the faith, by living it in fraternal sharing, and by celebrating it in liturgy and prayer (Cf. Acts 2:42.).

Love and prayers,
It is not knowing of Jesus or who Jesus are (is) that is the key to salvation , it is knowing Jesus in and of itself , that is the key to salvation

It is the following of Jesus in doing the will of the Father.

Mat 7:21 "Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

and all those that Christ reveils himself to, will do the will of the Father

Why does he say that there are only two types of people? It seems like a strawman argument.

What are these two types?

Friend, I’m a bit confused by you’re response. 1. Are you implying that all one needs to do “is to know God?” 2. And what does to “know God mean?” 3. Is that the end of the story? God "had to” [chose to] become- man, and suffer the pain and humiliations of death on the Cross for our Redemption and all we have to do in return is to "know God? 4. And just what is the purpose of knowing God? 5. If you personally know God; please share with us who and what God are.

Love and prayers,
Pat

Pat, I quoted the opening paragraphs of the Catholic Catechism and that confuses you? You, a faithful and devoted Catholic, are confused by your own catechism?

The rest of your questions call for many hours of great discussions. Maybe over some Scotch on my back deck as the crickets chirp and the sun sets? 🙂 I’ll ask the misses to bake a pie.

Almost a 😊

Having read the CCC cover to cover some four times and using it often in this Forum, I don’t have it memorized, but do know what it say’s.

Certainily I am aware of ones need to “know God” but that as my follow up questions suggest is somewaht akin to Baptism. Absolutely necessary, but still, only the first step.

Did I redeem myself:D

Love and prayers,
Pat
