Why don’t you have it at each worship serive?

Thanks for all whom answered my questions.

Sunday school is a ‘class’, whereas the worship service involves hymns, testifying, sermons, prayer – in short, ‘worship’.

Sure, though the people I know who do that, go to Sunday school at one church, but go to worship at another church (because the spouse is of another denomination).

Cultural tradition, I suppose.

I asked, on a Protestant forum, one time, why

the Lord’s Supper wasn’t celebrated weekly.

A lady answered my question by saying, that,
originally, a pastor served more than one church,
and so the communion service was held on the
Sunday when the pastor could be with the
congregation.

Then, she said, when condiitions changed, and
more pastors were available, the custom remained,
of having the communion service every 2 or 3
weeks, based on the original pattern.

What is the difference between your Sunday worship and your Sunday school class? Sunday worship is the highlight of the Christian congregation where the faithful share in the Word and Sacrament. Sunday school is the educational/catechetical element to Christian living.

Can you go just Sunday school and not go to worship?Yes but a former pastor said the highlight and desired goal of each week is for the congregation to attend the worship service. Christian ed is nice but definitely secondary in the eys of the pastoral staff.

How often does your church have the Lords Supper? Six times a year.

Why don’t you have it at each worship serive? As a Presbyterian church the Word is the emphasis. Sacraments are important but not needed to be celebrated weekly. The six Lord’s Supper celebrations are: First Sunday of Advent, First Sunday of Lent, Maundy Thursday, First Sunday of June, World Communiuon Sunday the first Sunday of October and I don’t know the sixth as I am answering this as the spouse of a member.

**Sunday worship is where one would worship the Lord God in church, with prayer, psalms and hymns.

Sunday school was for children to learn about God and the Bible.**

Can you go just Sunday school and not go to worship?

In the church I attended as a child, all children went to sunday school for the first 3/4 hour of the Sunday service and then joined in with the rest of the service (there was no either / or option). Our Sunday school class room was originaly located 10 minutes up the road and we all had to walk down to church, but in the end they were given a small room at the back of the church, where we could hear the service whilst being at Sunday school.

How often does your church have the Lords Supper?

It was every Sunday and Tuesday (for those who were unable to attend the Sunday service).

Why don’t you have it at each worship serive?

We did

Catholic (but attended the church in Wales / Anglican as a child)

actually when the Sunday School movement began in the 19th century (and it was quite controversial at the beginning) it was intended for both adults and children. It was a period of bible study and instruction in doctrine and right living led by trained volunteer teachers (sometimes paid a stipend). Its purpose was to provide instruction when the preacher could not be present, as he probably covered a wide territory as a circuit rider, and also involved what we today would call “praise and worship” --hymns, testimony etc. If I understand rightly, most of the opposition came from those who worried about lay persons doing the teaching, whether they themselves had been properly instructed and trained, lived worthy lives etc. Also whether it was an adequate alternative to a full worship service. It is my understanding that Sunday School was first introduced in evangelical congregations, but await further information from our Protestent friends on the forum.

John Paul III:

Sunday School is like the adult Bible class in that it is a “class”. You study a different Bible story each week, but geared towards kids. Sunday worship is that — liturgy, hymns, sermon. Sunday School and Bible class are held between church services.
John Paul III:

Yes, but Sunday School/Bible class isn’t meant as a substitute for worship. At my church there is poor attendance at the SS/Bible class hour but better attendance for church.
John Paul III:

Every week. Each service alternates Holy Communion — one week it is at Sat night and 10:45 AM Sunday, next week it is at 8 AM Sunday. (and on solemnities like Ash Wednesday, Maunday Thursday, etc.)
John Paul III:

Pietism. (There would also be some very upset people who think that the Holy Communion service is too long. My pastor likes to flip services every so often so that people who make a habit out of missing Holy Communion get caught off-guard. 😃 )

John Paul III:

There is a huge difference between the Sunday School Class and Sunday worship service. The Sunday School class is only once a month and is only for 3 - 8 year olds; learning about God and Jesus through stories, music and games. The older children attend the worship service with the rest of the congregation every week and the younger attend the worship service for the remainder of the month.
Can you go just Sunday school and not go to worship?
Not unless you fit the criteria mentioned above…

How often does your church have the Lords Supper?
Every week, except the first Sunday of the month

Why don’t you have it at each worship serive?
**The pastor has other Parishes to attend, and cannot always attend us; as we have a very small community. **

Since i don’t really understand, i’ll just explain my church’s structure.

Sunday services are meant for adults(and high school students). Parents can drop their kids off in our childcare program(sunday school, i guess you could call it) before the service, and pick them up after.
Although the service has some much needed worship, it is mostly a teaching time. An extended homily, i guess you could call it. This service tries to reach the most new people, and is what we call “seeker friendly”.
Later in the week, many people choose to be involved in a “small group” where they get together with 10 or so other like minded christians, and try and rely on and build up one another. in a large church like ours( a couple thousand) this helps to make it feel smaller, and gives you the intimate relationships of a smaller church.
Once a month we have whats called our “all church worship and communion”. It’s on a wednesday night, and anyone can attend. The entire service(an hour or so) is worship(as in singing), with a small message(about the size of a homily) and communion right in the middle.
Why don’t we do this every week? well, i guess partly it might scare people aware from the sunday service… And i guess it just isn’t neccessary that often.
