In this it’s said Mary was examined by a midwife to confirm her virginity. Is this a reliable source?

The Protoevangelium of James is non-canonical literature. There may be some additional things supposed by the writer according to the culture of the times
 
It sounds like Fr. Echert is saying Jesus’ " brothers" weren’t stepbrothers but I always assumed they were.
In the Eastern tradition they were traditionally interpreted as stepbrothers, in the Western tradition - as cousins.
