Prove The Existence Of God Using Scientific Standards?

Okay, I’ve never really heard that before until just a couple of days ago while discussing religion with a friend of mine and he used the statement. Of course, the immediate reaction to it will be you can’t. However, I’ve come to realise that the statement is a misleading term. Why? Because there are a lot of scientific standards out there and they need to define exactly what those standards are.

So whenever you hear that phrase, keep these standards in mind and ask them which standards does he want to go by.

And the point is, yes, you can not prove the existence of God using scientific standards, but that is setting science up as a god.

Unless you consider philosophy and theology as sciences. Which you should.

For instance, from things, which are in movement and cannot be the adequate principle of their motion, to the First Mover immovable; from the procession of worldly things from causes, which are subordinated to each other, to the First Cause uncaused; from corruptible things, which are indifferent alike to being and non-being, to the absolutely Necessary Being; from things, which, according to their limited perfection of existence, life, intelligence, are more or less perfect in their being, their life, their intelligence, to That Which is intelligent, living, and being in the highest degree; and finally, from the order, which exists in the universe, to the existence of a separate Intelligence which ordained, disposed, and directs things to their end.
 
I really don’t see the point of your argument. Science cannot prove God’s existence nor non existence. Period. End of story. What is your point? Philosophy and its subset of theology are logic “sciences”. They often provide sound reasons for adhering to a particular set of beliefs, but again they are clearly not proof either. There are things in the world that are syllogistically true that are in fact not true. They are not science but social science. There can be some overlap between the two, hard science and social science, but in the end, there is just too much that is subjective that can’t be accounted for.

This is an interesting claim. I’d be interested to hear you flesh this out into an argument.

Also, I wonder if this conversation would be improved by investigating what we mean by “proof” in this context. I think the original poster’s alluding to “scientific standards” was an interesting start. Physical science is useful in this context as a model of rigour, but the practices of physical scientific methodology would, I think, be inappropriate for investigating the existence of God. This is because hypothesis, repeatable experiment, and the fund of empirical consequences gained by the predictive power of the theory, are inextricably empirical, pertaining, as they do in this context, to the physical stuff under investigation. Happily, I think we all agree on this point. But this model of rigour is familiar to any mathematician, philosopher, or theologian. That is because the models used in these investigations are remarkably similar. Their content is not equally as often empirical, but their methods are, in no particular order: hypothesis (claim, conjecture, conclusion, vaguely or ill-conceived assertion), repeatable experiment (argument considered from all angles, chain of logical reasoning fleshed out, susceptibility to weakness of implication, contrary arguments dismantled, form and content, use and mention, etc. etc.), fund of consequences gained by logical implication (what implications to my system of thought can be gained here, etc.). Now, these steps necessarily vary from discipline to discipline, as does the form of reasoning. For example, pure mathematics uses deduction, while philosophy uses both deduction and induction, depending upon the content under consideration as well as the motivation and emphasis of the philosopher. Contrastingly, physical science uses a great deal of induction and relatively little deduction. Then there are the social sciences discussed by the previous poster. They use a large amount of induction, depending as they must on statistical data and probability theory. But induction is weak deduction, or evidentiary deduction. In fact, in order to operate, it assumes set laws on which to graft hypotheses whose veracity is then tested inductively. The very idea that the induction will yield predictive and predictable results is built on deduction. In fact, mathematical induction is deduction under a different name; but this is a linguistic quibble; actually, more a bad joke than a quibble: mathematical induction has nothing whatever to do with induction elsewhere. Anyway, at no point in any of these sciences does subjectivism play a role, except perhaps in some confused claims masquerading as philosophy. These are mere poetry, which has its own value, probably greater than that of the disciplines we have been discussing. But that claim is only subjective. 😉

When a paradox exists, there is always a problem with the nature of the question.
For example:

Can God make a rock so large he cannot lift it?

If God cannot make this rock, he is not omnipotent.
If God can make this rock and cannot lift it, he is not omnipotent!
Hence the paradox because we know that God is omnipotent!

The problem here is not with God, but with our limited understanding of language and
God’s purpose, word or logos. The tower of Babel incident is a classic example
of what goes wrong when language gets in the way. Lifting a rock is a mechanical
motion that requires an equal and opposite reaction, such as terra firma under your
feet. This is in the realm of nature and science, not faith, love and charity: the
basis for Christian Faith.

Always be aware of the dual purpose we have: we are animals in the one purpose
because of original sin, and have a soul in the second purpose, that purpose is
to strive towards faith, love and charity.

You can have both: science and faith without clouding the issue. Just keep it
simple and enjoy your life as a mammal, but with the distinction of knowing that
your love, faith and charity will reduce human suffering and get us back to the garden.

Hmmm. Well, this sort of depends upon what you are willing to regard as “proof.” Now, if you mean by “proof” that which is useful to engineers, perhaps not exactly. But, if you mean that which is proof by normal scientific standards, then maybe so. I haven’t gone that far yet, but there are those that have taken it pretty far. Of course, the presuppositions upon which such a proof must rely are presuppositions taken directly from science, which may be suspect themselves. But, if they are not, then within Yppop’s theory is a pretty good proof for God’s existence - from science, in my humble opinion.

Catholics understand God as almighty not omnipotent.
 
There are several things God cannot do, here are a few.
  1. He cannot lie
  2. He cannot deceive
  3. He cannot be unjust
THANK GOD!

Imagine what life would be like if those weren’t true!
