Proverbs 20:30 states:

“Blows and wounds cleanse away evil, and beatings purge the inmost being. (NIV)” This has been often explained as a reference to corporal punishment. Could it also be used to explain doctrines such as penance and purgatory, since the purgation of sins in purgatory involve suffering?

Does anything in the context suggest there is any reference to the next world ?​

 
As with many proverbs, there isn’t much context to speak of. The preceding verses are a collection of various pieces of wisdom and advice.
 
Could it simply be a pre-figurement of Christ’s Passion?

If its a reference to Christ’s passion, why would it say that blows purge the inmost being? It seems that the one receiving the blows is the one being cleansed. While this verse does not deal with the afterlife per se, it seems to support the notion that purgation from sin (or the effects of sin) are often accomplished through suffering. That’s why I wondered if this verse could be used when discussing penance, redemptive suffering, purgatory, etc.
