Greetings,

My son would like a PS3. My wife did some research and it would appear one can get it in 3 flavors - 250GB, 320GB, and 500GB.

I understand that when you’re playing a game and you ‘save’ it, that that takes up memory space. But I’d assume a handful of MBs at most! I’m also assuming that one can download and store games. Again, a handful of GBs.

Are there other things that take up space?

What else can you tell me about it.

We have a Wii and we do Netflix. I understand that one can do the same on PS3.

I also understand that one can watch BlueRay on PS3.

What else?

Thanks.

I love Mario Brothers. What would be ‘similar’ on PS3? Or must-have games? I’ve got a 5yr, 10 yr and 13 yr old.

Some games, depending which ones, will actually load some or all of the disc content to the hard drive. This is done because some of the games are so massive or graphically driven that the game would slow down if the ps3 had to always access the disc… the hard drive can be accessed much faster for the information and leave the rest of the computing power to drive the graphics for smoother game play. For the money I would go with the biggest you can afford… never fails… go small and when full you wished you had gotten the bigger one.

Told that to my wife about her IPhone… she wanted the 8gb and I said get the 32gb…she’s glad she did.

Hope this helps…

Merry Christmas, God Bless you and your family.

Paul

First let me say that for a 5 or 10 year old, I would stay away from a PS3. I would even hesitate getting one for a 13 year old. We got it for our 12 year old, 5 years ago, and our biggest frustration was that most games for the PS3 are rated “M” or “T.” “M” games were not something we wanted him playing. And we had to really check out the “T” games.

So he had this system but very few games. He is also a Mario fan, but since it is, as he says a “platformer,” you can’t find Mario games for the PS3. And the PS3 doesn’t have anything like it. 🤷

Yes, you can play DVDs and Blue Rays on the system and yes it does work with Netflix. But in essence you will end up with a very expensive Blue-ray player.

My advice is to get the Wii U. It just came out last month and has a brand new Mario game (New Super Mario Bros. U).

But I am incredibly biased. 🙂

I’m generally in favor of getting more storage space whenever possible, but I’m not familiar enough with the PS3 to really comment on what it would be used for. The Wii only has 512 MB of storage space. I have many Wii games and a couple games I downloaded and I still have room to spare. Even the new Wii U comes in 8 GB and 32 GB sizes. I have no idea what you’d need 500 GB for, unless you plan on downloading most of your games. 🤷 Some of the AAA titles can take up 10-20 GB as a download. That would add up fast.

Its the games that will take up space. Some games need to install some data for faster loading. Some games you buy off PSN (PlayStation Network) and you download it completely on your hard drive, you don’t have a physical copy. And you can download tons of other stuff too.

Depends on you much stuff you’re going to put on your hard drive. I still have mine from 2008 and 80GB and I still don’t have a problem. But I’m a 30-something dad who doesn’t have time to play that much anymore. I can imagine if I was 10 years younger and single, I’d go through 500GB pretty quickly. Especially this last year, a lot of games are digital (no more discs).

I have games on my phone that use more than 4GB

Bigger is better. Those consoles are not user upgradable

I agree. PS3 and Xbox games are mostly action games rated M or T. No varieties. Nintendo, on the other hand, is more family friendly.

Other things that can take up storage space are pictures, videos and music. The PS3 is a multi-media console, obviously its primary purpose is a gaming console though. Not sure of anything similar to Mario, on the PSOne and PS2, there were Crash Bandicoot games that were similar to Mario and/or Sonic. But, as the tech advanced, the games, being more graphically brilliant, tend to be more action/adventure type. A lot of games rated T or M. Check out playstation’s website and check out the games there. you can search for family oriented

I wouldn’t say there is no variety, just limited. but for younger ones, I would suggest the WiiU.
Some tites that may be appropriate are:
Little Big Planet
Ratchet and Clank
Sly Cooper
Jak and Daxter
Spyro
and of course there are the games based on the Disney movies and such, but those are generally available on all consoles.
