In the LotH I often see this Psalm.

1 When Israel came forth from Egypt, the house of Jacob from an alien people,
2 Judah became God’s holy place, Israel, God’s domain.
3 The sea beheld and fled; the Jordan turned back.
4 The mountains skipped like rams; the hills, like lambs of the flock.
5 Why was it, sea, that you fled? Jordan, that you turned back?
6 You mountains, that you skipped like rams? You hills, like lambs of the flock?
7 Tremble, earth, before the Lord, before the God of Jacob,
8 Who turned rock into pools of water, stone into flowing springs.

For the most part, I recognize the Exodus under Moses, the parting of the sea, water from the rock, but what does v. 4 and 6 refer to?

My Bible commentary said that this psalm described nature’s part that it took in the Exodus of the Israelites. The mountins and hills it is referring to, is the shaking of Mount Sinai and the surrounding Hills. You remember in Exodus where it said that the Mountain shook and the lightening flashed and stuff before Moses went up alone to talk to God on the mountain.

God bless.

Israel is at the northern end of the Great Rift Valley, one of the most geologically active areas in the world. Being in an earthquake is one of the most frightening experiences there is. The verses have therefore a metaphorical meaning rooted in the physical experience of the earth shaking. The word “like” is the key here.
