Psalm 25: 7

In the KJV this passage is different than the NAB.

The NAB reads: …remember me only in light of your love.

The KJV does not mention this part of the passage.

Any help as to the why?

Translations vary. But apart from that simple fact, the KJV is an incomplete version that leaves out many portions of the Bible that the Catholic Church accepts. I’m not sure it would come down to individual verses, but it’s possible. Some modern translations leave out the last few verses of Mark because some Bible scholars doubt they were a part of the original text.
 
The words in question in verse 7 of the NAB seem to appear in verse 8 of the KJV.

7Remember no more the sins of my youth; remember me only in the light of your love. (NAB)

8Remember not the sins of my youth, or my transgressions; according to thy steadfast love remember me, for thy goodness’ sake, O LORD! (KJV)

The text of verse 7 is uncertain, & seems to have been disturbed at some point in the history of the transmission of the text. The two versions are probably relying on different “streams” or “branches” of the text of the Psalm; & may also be relying on different witnesses to the text. For (a lot of) the detail, see post 3​

There is no reason to bring the differences between Protestant & Catholic Bibles into the question. This kind of uncertainty is not unusual - it’s a consequence of the fact that the text has been copied by fallible human beings. ##

My 1971 NAB is actually closer to the KJV and reads:
7The sins of my youth and my frailties remember not; in your kindness remember me, because of your goodness, O LORD.

My 1991 NAB, the one that uses the word ‘light’, indicates on its title page that it includes “THE REVISED PSALMS” and in its Preface to the Old Testament, on page 45, it says:
The basic text for the Psalms is not the Massoretic but one which the editors considered closer to the original inspired form, namely the Hebrew text underlying the new Latin Psalter of the Church, the Liber Psalmorum (1944, 1945). Nevertheless they retained full liberty to establish the reading of the original text on sound critical principles.

This is an alphabetical psalm. Verse one begins with Aleph, verse two with Beth etc.

From what I can see, from my French Jerusalem Bible, part of verse 7 was moved before verse 6, so that there would be a verse for the letter Vav.

Here is how it reads in that bible (my translation)

7 (a) In You all day I hope
because of your goodness, Lord.

6 Be mindful of your affection, Lord,
of your love, for they are forever.

**7 (b) Do not recall the errors of my youth, **
but remember me according to your love.

I don’t know if this helps, but there it is!

In this case, the KJV is almost identical to the Douay-Rheims, with the exception of punctuation.

I still am curious about the word “LIGHT”!

In the NAB, where did they get the word “LIGHT”?

For me it is important and interesting: “Light of your love.”

Or, the way that my mind works: Love’s light.

Again, from where does the word LIGHT come?

I wonder how this is related to Genesis: “Let there be Light.”
 
The Hebrew literally says:

The sins of my youth and my transgressions remember not;
according to your Grace remember for me THOU, for the sake of YOUR Goodness YAHWEH.

In the Vulgate (where it is Psalm 24:7):

24:7 delicta iuventutis meae et ignorantias meas ne memineris secundum misericordiam TUAM memento mei * TU; propter bonitatem TUAM DOMINE

This is virtually word for word parallel to the Hebrew.

The site I copied this from had that star between mei and tu. (I will have to find out why. I added capitals.)

In the Septuagint, it is 24:7:
αμαρτιας νεοτητος μου και αγνοιας μου μη μνησθης κατα το
ελεος σου μνησθητι μου συ ενεκα της χρηστοτητος σου κυριε
which, like the Vulgate, conforms as closely as the Greek can to the original Hebrew.

No mention of light - so I take it that that one English translation merely uses “light” idiomatically in place of the word “sake”, that is, not as in the light produced by Love, but in regard to HIS Goodness.

I’ll give a transliteration of the Hebrew:
[X=a rough aspiration from the back of the throat, like a cross between h and q in position, but sort of like ch in Scot. “loch” in sound]
`=the throat constriction between As in the word pair “a apple”, said by many a little child]
'=much like the back of throat gargled sound of Parisian r]
[kh=an aspirated k, closer to the front of mouth than X]

Xattooth ne'uray ufsha'ay al-tizkor;
kexasdekha zekhar-liy-attah lema’an tovekha YHWH.

(Sins [of]youth_my &_transgressions_my not_remember;
like_Grace_YOUR remember-for_me-THOU for_cause [of]Goodness_YOUR, YHWH.)
