Is consulting a psychic reader a sin? I consulted a psychic reader for the fun of it. She was correct in almost everything she said except that I don’t go to church and don’t read a bible or even have a bible exposed anywhere. I had to stop her and correct her on these three things. She then said that God is not listening to my prayers because I am not visiting the church and lighting a candle and asking for forgiveness. She suggested I light a white candle and pray to God for forgiveness. I do not believe that God is not listening to my prayers, but I admit I should pray more often for his forgiveness. I am not sure about the white candle. Has anyone consulted a psychic reader?

Here’s a question to ask yourself:

If you went to a Psychic reader “for fun”, why would you even remotely consider or give a second thought to anything she said?

That God is not listening to your prayers because you don’t light up a candle seems to me to be a very serious thing:

IMHO most psychic readers and the like are charlatans. Remember “Miss Cleo” on TV? Mostly harmless stuff, if one TRULY doesn’t take them seriously.

However, this one is seriously suggesting something against Church teachings; and may I say to the point of idolatry. She might as well have suggested burnt offerings instead of lighting a candle; neither one will have an influence on the Almighty.

My advice…stay far, far away from this kind of thing. My guess is that if you returned and told her your prayers were not being answered despite using such a candle, that the advice would get more and more bizarre and counter-Catholic.

Psychics that claim to know the mind of the Almighty=very dangerous.

We (Catholics) are forbidden to consult anyone apart from our priests. Most of these people are out to make a buck and can really screw up your life if you let them. Don’t even think about what you were told.

Honestly, it soudns like this woman was getting words straight from the Devil himself, especially with the message that God isnt’ listening to your prayers. You need to bind up the spirits and demons associated with psychic readings and you need to wash yourself clean in the blood of Jesus Christ and then head on down to confession.

Whether you went out of “fun” or not is not really the issue. You did something incredibly dangerous, you opened yoruself up to a world of lies and deception and harm for the spirit.

Never, ever consult such idiots again. Whether she was in it for the cash or thinks she’s geninune isn’t really what’s at stake, satan can still work in money grubbing individuals in this industry.

Sorry if I sound over the top and naggy, but I have seen waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to many people fall from the path and screw their lives, both physical and spiritual by getting involved in this sort of thing.

Stay the heck away from it! It can only end badly!

Edit: God just kicked me spiritually, I’m going to pray for you.

Fr. Amorth, Rome’s famous chief exorcist, warns strongly against fooling around with this sort of thing. I agree that many/most are total con artitsts…but many are also involved in occultic activities which the Church considers gravely sinful and spiritually dangerous.

Thanks everyone for the (name removed by moderator)ut. All of you are so right. I will not do that again! The thought of her telling me that God is not listening to my prayers! Umph. I am so sorry I did this and brought harm to my spirit. And yes, I will right this with God. NEVER AGAIN.

For your reference here is the Church teaching:

CCC 2115 God can reveal the future to his prophets or to other saints. Still, a sound Christian attitude consists in putting oneself confidently into the hands of Providence for whatever concerns the future, and giving up all unhealthy curiosity about it. Improvidence, however, can constitute a lack of responsibility.

CCC 2116 All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to “unveil” the future.48 Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over time, history, and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone.

CCC 2117 All practices of magic or sorcery, by which one attempts to tame occult powers, so as to place them at one’s service and have a supernatural power over others - even if this were for the sake of restoring their health - are gravely contrary to the virtue of religion. These practices are even more to be condemned when accompanied by the intention of harming someone, or when they have recourse to the intervention of demons. Wearing charms is also reprehensible. Spiritism often implies divination or magical practices; the Church for her part warns the faithful against it. Recourse to so-called traditional cures does not justify either the invocation of evil powers or the exploitation of another’s credulity.
