I personally do not believe or rely on psychics or mediums. It says in the Bible **not **to go to them. Some of my extended family go to this medium every week. It bothers me so much because I think it is against God’s teachings.
I’m curious to know what people on this forum think of these psychic mediums. Thank you.

I used to dabble in that area, before I knew how wrong it was. You can tell your relatives it’s not good to do and leave it at that, they aren’t obviously believers so what ever you address with them, in their lives, it’s doubtful they will listen.

Some of them have abilities, the problem is, they are tainted and it’s up to you to figure out the truth from the lies. I found it amusing with the ones that give you time frames as to what will happen in your life, like we have no free will and are supposed to just bow down and accept their rubbish.

We should pray for those people, they are in deep bondage with what they practice, they just don’t know it.

I havent seen a psychic since I became Catholic and found out its wrong. Only a few times have I done it anyway. One I saw was very acurate… it was very bizzarre how accurate she was. She prayed for guidance before hand and was/professed to be a Christian.

I am curious as to why they are bad? If this is a gift… isnt it a gift from God? Or … not?

I dont go to them… just wondering why it is so bad.

You are opening up a door that is best to remain shut when you delve into that area. You have no idea what is actually communicating through the medium, and it’s not really a gift from the one above, more like the one below, and that is why it’s tainted.

that makes sense… satan would have no problem making it look like its all a gift from God and use it for evil.

I am sure opening oneself up to those thigs would lead to other things…

thanks.

so could psychics be demon possesed? What causes such things?

Possessed wouldn’t be the word I would use, more like enslaved to it’s will. They had a fortune teller at the fair last summer I visited, it was really clear upon what was going on, almost a visible dark cloud of oppression that surrounded her. I put her in my prayers in regards to freeing her from her bondage and to help her see what is going on with what she’s practicing in the true light.

The thing about stuff like this, you can go literally back to the beginning where satan tempts eve, telling her the lie that she would gain new freedoms, only in the end, it is just the opposite. This is the lie he uses for all that delve into this area, and by the time they realize they are in bondage, it’s too late, closing that door some times takes an entire lifetime to do, which is why it’s a great big no no to even entertain going to that area, even if it seems totally innocent at first, it always progresses into deeper areas, leading you away from God.

I agree… it always leads to something else. Never towards the church.

The medium my family member went to said he was a practicing catholic and that he asked his Monsignor if what he was doing was OK and the Monsignor said it was. Now, I don’t know if he was telling the truth but that is not what Christians believe…The Bible forbids anyone from going to mediums…It says it in Leviticus…

Church teaching says it is wrong and we need to avoid this. I don’t recall any of God’s prophets passing out individual fortunes for the people in the village. Anyone doing this is putting themselves at risk to the evil one.

God has given us His words and direction for living a good life. Fortune tellers were not listed in the things we should be doing.

In the end it confuses people and causes them to make bad decisions based upon bad or inappropriate information. I’m not saying that anyone who supposedly can see the future is evil but I do think they are taking risks. If the Lord wants to give power to someone to do good, I’m sure He will do so in a way for us to clearly understand.

That doesnt sound right.

When I went thtrough RCIA… my class was asking about excercisms… and asking why when they are portrayed on TV the Priest is so calm…like he doesnt even believe its happening …even when plates are being thrown around the room… haha

and the Priest told us its because we are not to give anything evil any energy.

So I suppose that would apply to this topic. Dont let anything that could be a foot hold in our lives to even start.

Good point.

we are not ment to see what God see’s unless he wishes us to, and then it is only for those who received it, if he reveiles something to some one and tells them to tell them, then O.K. lol
but we are not suposed to seek that knowledge, because that would be like stealing from God…
lol
i couldnt think of a simile at the end there 😛

Having formerly had a great interest in the more bizarre forms of stage magic (i.e. apparent psychic readings, mind control and stage hypnosis), I can guarantee you, that there are thousands of seemingly supernatural and impossible feats that can be accomplished, using nothing but psychology, misdirection and a good deal of confidence.

While I have not yet come to any conclusion about whether demons have the power to effect such things by darker means, such would surely be the exception rather than the rule. I think you can safely assume trickery in most cases. “Cold reading” is another bag of monkeys entirely, and is used (consciously or not) by different types of readers. You can get stunning results without sacrificing any goats.

However.

Opening yourself to spiritual influence is a very dangerous thing, and while the medium is most likely a charlatan, the “forces” that they open themselves to, are very real. Also, the charlatan might be a thoroughly unpleasant and sinister person, who manipulates your family to gain power and money (my impression is, that astrologers, tarot readers, aura readers and the like are quite often well intending but misguided persons, while mediums and faith healers are generally charlatans… there is of course a whole spectrum in between as well)

I recommend praying for your family, for the protection of St. Michael.

Why does this book cost $80-$100 used on Amazon? Technical glitch, or is just really rare?

Mainly, I think they’re hucksters who prey on the gullible and credulous.

If you’re interested, you may want to do more research into cold reading and the Forer Effect.

Good call.

However, in my experience, mediums (“stage mediums” at least) don’t use cold reading near as much as the sceptic community may suppose. Just to say, that if the medium is worth his salt, you can have a complete knowledge of cold reading, and he will still be able to amaze you with amazing insights into the personal life of subjects, that there is apparently no way he could know - not just Barnum statements or lucky guesses.

Cold reading is one “sleight of mind” that the medium use to appear to talk to the deceased.

Joseph had a special cup which he used for divination…I don’t know, what’s up with that?

Genesis 44:15 Joseph said to them,
“What is this deed that you have done?
Do you not know that such a man as I
can indeed practice divination?”

I don’t think God approved, but it also doesn’t seem that God punished him for divination.
