What are the Catholic views on Psychics and or Mediums? Can these supposed abilities be actual gifts from God - Or is it looked at in a negative light? Does the Church recognize gifts or abilities such as these???🤷

Catechism of the Catholic Church
2116 All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to “unveil” the future.48 Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over time, history, and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone.

2117 All practices of magic or sorcery, by which one attempts to tame occult powers, so as to place them at one’s service and have a supernatural power over others - even if this were for the sake of restoring their health - are gravely contrary to the virtue of religion. These practices are even more to be condemned when accompanied by the intention of harming someone, or when they have recourse to the intervention of demons. Wearing charms is also reprehensible. Spiritism often implies divination or magical practices; the Church for her part warns the faithful against it. Recourse to so-called traditional cures does not justify either the invocation of evil powers or the exploitation of another’s credulity

They are of the devil if they are real.
No, they’re not. Not always. Non-local consciousness has been proven in laboratories all over the world for a very long time (on the quantum level). I think God does give us these gifts but THEY ARE NOT TO BE USED for the purposes they are being used, not at all. THAT is the sin.

I think, in order to be open to the Holy Spirit, (totally open), this gift of awareness and sensitivity is a grace and I think most of us “have it” as children. It is being used and abused by charlatans, money changers, those who teach along with their interpretations the new age philosophies of “guides” and “reincarnation” and a whole boatload of ugly, horrible, stuff straight from the Pit. But that does not mean that telepathy, telekinesis, remote viewing, and strong (very strong) intuition (sometimes involving the future) are not legitimate.

The Bible prohibits necromancy and the divination to evoke spirits in order to foretell events or control events: this is “magick” both black and white (as if there were such a thing as white magick). “An that it harm none, do as thou wilt” is the formula of procedure for Wiccans. It is not of God. It is of Satan. There’s a huge difference between divination, tarot card readings, Ouija boards, predicting future events, and the actual grace of being open to the Holy Spirit. Saints have made predictions (sometimes due to apparitions); are they from Satan???

It is thought, on an abstract level of quantum physics, that OUR observation of events actually creates them: that a thing being measured will do what our consciousness expects of it and that we cannot actually measure any quantum event (“Distant Mental Influence”, William Braud Ph.D.) and:
“I would say that in my scientific and philosophical work, my main concern has been with understanding the nature of reality in general and of consciousness in particular as a coherent whole, which is never static or complete but which is an unending process of movement and unfoldment…”
(David Bohm: Wholeness and the Implicate Order)"

WHAT are the Voyagers 1 and 2 actually reporting (their cameras have been disabled to reserve power, they are sending signals in other ways at the present time, but here is an explanation of their mission and accomplishments:

As of April 2013, Voyager 1 is the farthest manmade object that has ever been sent from the Earth. On 15 June 2012, scientists at NASA reported that Voyager 1 might be very close to entering interstellar space and becoming the first manmade object to leave the Solar System.[1][2]
Both of these scientific missions into outer space have gathered large amounts of data about the gas giants of the solar system, and their orbiting satellites, about which little had been previously known. In addition, the trajectories of the two spacecraft have been used to place limits on the existence of any hypothetical trans-Neptunian planets.
Data and photographs collected by the Voyagers’ cameras, magnetometers, and other instruments revealed previously unknown details about each of the giant planets and their moons. Close-up images from the spacecraft charted Jupiter’s complex cloud forms, winds, and storm systems and discovered volcanic activity on its moon Io. Saturn’s rings were found to have enigmatic braids, kinks, and spokes and to be accompanied by myriad “ringlets.” At Uranus Voyager 2 discovered a substantial magnetic field around the planet and 10 additional moons. Its flyby of Neptune uncovered three complete rings and six hitherto unknown moons as well as a planetary magnetic field and complex, widely distributed auroras."

WHAT ARE THEY “SEEING”? Are they “seeing” and reporting on what is actually THERE or are they “seeing” and reporting on what human consciousness, as a whole, ANTICIPATES is there? We don’t know, do we.

All life is entangled on the quantum level. Everything in existence has consciousness of some sort (quite a controversial statement, I know, but well proven if you do some simple Internet research). Such entanglement suggests that we who are alive, now, may in some manner be privy to the memories of those who have lived before us (see Rupert Sheldrake, “The Presence of the Past”). We know nothing. Zip. Zero. We are the mouse on the space station.

I think it is an error to approach people of questionable character and even more questionable capabilities when it comes to “psychic” things. It’s far too great a risk. You don’t know who/what you are allowing into your psychic state, into the soul of your life, it’s potentially quite dangerous. I think we can fully trust God, our Author and Creator, to inform us, to allow us to be informed (should it be His pleasure). It is far better to believe in the words of Jesus, to follow Him; and that means, if you are in serious grief (and believe me, I know what that is), you do not attempt to “contact” the person you grieve because you will most likely find yourself face to face with a dreadful enemy. If God gives you a moment of perception of that loved one, that is a huge grace and one we thank Him for. We don’t go looking for it and we don’t expect it. “It is by faith we are healed, and not by works, so that no man can boast.”

This is nothing but messing with the occult…satan and his fallen angels the demons. Please Please stay away from this!

So does this mean that there isn’t ghosts? And that all these purported encounters are false? Like in the case of neutral spirits - like spirits of children, and then the more evil ones that are reported. Do they exist?

They are called demons. They take many forms, come from the father of lies himself, and they are very real which is why we must stay away from them.

It reminds me of a scene from the movie The Exorcist. The devil is trying to deceive the priest by having him think his mother is in the bed or on a chair talking to him. I think that’s how the scene goes. The devil is a deceiver.

Catholicism’s rejection of psychics/mediums doesn’t have anything to do with whether there are ghosts or not. It simply condemns attempts of mediums to communicate with the dead, and of psychics to obtain knowledge not available by ordinary means, all of which may simply mean communicating with demons. Catholicism strongly forbids becoming involved in such practices.
I wonder if some of your questions have something to do with watching the movies? If so, they might not be a reliable guide to reality.

I don’t think they be gifts from God. We all know 7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit in addition we also know how God provides for us: through providence. Nowhere in the Scriptures does it say, mediums and psychics to be Divine Gifts. They are actually condemned in Deuteronomy.

Psychics and Mediums lead people away from genuine worship of God. Which is devotion, avoiding sin, knowledge, understanding, wisdom and SACRAMENTS which remove and weaken the Original Sin, increase and fortify Sanctifying Grace, cleanse conscience, peaceful conscience, love of neighbor etc…and not sense feeling of mediums and demonic inspired predictions of demons through psychics and sensible and emotional gluttony.

Paul had one following him around in the Book of Acts. She kept repeating over and over “This man is a servant of the Most High God who shows you the Way of Salvation” Paul got so annoyed that he cast the spirit out of her. This was what led up to him and Silas getting thrown in the jail at Philippi. BTW For years this bothered me. Since technically this girl was saying a “true” statement why was this a problem?

Because most people were idolaters and pagans so if demons were attacking Paul in this way they hoped: first to lead Paul to imprudence, second to lead him to pride, and third to get him jailed, tortured, killed. If demons expose this man who claims to serve some other God other then their accepted gods, well, you better watch out.

Walk down the street today and let people know about Jesus, Salvation and Sin and you’ll be attacked and maybe even killed (if people were not afraid of human justice). Justice system that we have today was not there before, in Paul’s time.

Thanks for the explanation!👍

Actually Paul removed the spirit from her and she happened to be the kings psychic which he could no longer use after Paul removed the spirit from her which is why they wanted to kill Paul.

This was when Paul and Silas were thrown in jail at Philippi, was it not?
