The problem with pasting is context. I have no idea of the context. Nor does it make any sense as it now stands in your quotation. Regardless of what he said, his discourses were not canonized. And this is the point. No one studies the discourses of BY as scripture. And I don’t believe that his discourses were ever studied as canonized scripture. Talk is cheap but action speaks louder than words.

Book Of Wisdom 1
2 For he is found by them that tempt him not: and he sheweth himself to them that have faith in him. 3 For perverse thoughts separate from God: and his power, when it is tried, reproveth the unwise: 4 For wisdom will not enter into a malicious soul, nor dwell in a body subject to sins. 5 For the Holy Spirit of discipline will flee from the deceitful, and will withdraw himself from thoughts that are without understanding, and he shall not abide when iniquity cometh in.

6 For the spirit of wisdom is benevolent, and will not acquit the evil speaker from his lips: for God is witness of his reins, and he is a true searcher of his heart, and a hearer of his tongue. 7 For the spirit of the Lord hath filled the whole world: and that, which containeth all things, hath knowledge of the voice. 8 Therefore he that speaketh unjust things cannot be hid, neither shall the chastising judgment pass him by. 9 For inquisition shall be made into the thoughts of the ungodly: and the hearing of his words shall come to God, to the chastising of his iniquities. 10 For the ear of jealousy heareth all things, and the tumult of murmuring shall not be hid.

Wow you are certainly putting much into BY here. You see, you are missing my point. I am already said the BY was not perfect but that does not make him an evil man. If we go back in time to the Rosary and how the Rosary was used by certain popes, we can see problems also. If I remember correctly there was a time catholics were flocking to say the rosary as a forgiveness for sins. Or was the rosary used as a forgiveness for indulgences. Anyway, it is in Garry Wills’ book The Rosary. The rosary has quite a history. Now of course, I can blame the popes for the misuse and yes, it would be their fault but I can see the imperfections of popes as human beings and come to an understanding of human limitations.

This is what I am saying about BY. He was a good man who just happened to say things that he shouldn’t have said. And yet, what he said is not scripture. However, there is a section in the D & C, I believe that is.

Brigham Young - “I will make a statement here that has been brought against me as a crime, perhaps, or as a fault in my life. Not here, I do not allude to anything of the kind in this place, but in the councils of nations – that Brigham Young has said ‘when he sends forth his discourses to the world they may call them Scripture.’ I say now, when they are copied and approved by me they are as good Scripture as is couched in this Bible, and if you want to read revelation read the sayings of him who knows the mind of God.” Journal of Discourses, vol. 13, p. 264 (1870)

Dear people, I am not from the US. I know nothing about the Mormon and the Amish community. Can anybody tell me about them objectively.

Zerinus,

I did NOT “blame the [LDS] church” for what she wrote. She’s completely responsible for what she published. Although if I think about it in broader terms…she certainly didn’t arrive at this point in a vaccuum. Hello? She’s a McConkie Mormon!

Are we to blame McConkie then? I’d be willing to bet she has a 1st edition of Mormon Doctrine.

She has written exactly what I would expect from an older-generation Mormon. Albeit a CRAZY one who obviously doesn’t know better that one should not publish religious beliefs AGAINST another religion in a newsletter to her customers, actors, etc. and distribute that newsletter in an area where that religion is the predominant religion and expect to retain those customers!

I have personally been under a heck of a lot of stress for several months and from several different sources. This incident was more or less the straw that broke the camel’s back this particular week for me. Perhaps I did “fly off the handle” because I did something totally out of character. Normally I would have NEVER have made a scene like I did by yanking those kids during a performance.

I wanted to ignore and forget what I had just read. Believe me, I desperately did. But I knew I couldn’t.

I also knew that I could not sit through that whole play with those words staring up at me and mocking me while my children made money for her and her theater.

I posted about how my husband talked to her and explained why what she published was very offensive and totally incorrect. He further invited her to RCIA. Do we really expect we’d change her opinion on Catholicism this late in her life? NAH. You can’t teach old dogs new tricks. Perhaps and hopefully she did realize at the very least that it was a mistake to publish and distribute her opinions to an unknown audience.
I doubt if she will attend your RCIA; but if I were you I would invite her to dinner some day, and show her how you lived as Cathlics; and then take her aside and explain to her with patience that what she believed was not correct, and also contrary to the LDS position; and in any case, it is unwise to offend people of another faith while trying to provide a service for them. Then you might also invite her to attend Church with you one Sunday, and who knows she might even accept.

It is clear, in my view, that Joseph Smith behaved in classic philosopher king fashion, and that the Mormon “faithful history” policy discloses a group of modern philosopher kings who feel justified in telling pious lies. “Faithful history” is a form of Mormon censorship. It suppresses all information that does not encourage Mormons to be more obedient to current Mormon leaders. Hence, facts that strongly suggest Smith and other Mormon leaders are not trustworthy are airbrushed out of Mormon consciousness.mccue.cc/bob/spirituality.htm

Former Mormon bishop explains the collapse of his faith
McCue said, “I read Mormon history as the professional historians write it, and realized that my religious leaders had misled me as to how Mormonism started, and [recognized]&a pattern of Mormon leadership deception [that] goes back to Mormonism’s beginnings with Joseph Smith.”
“The suppressed aspects of Mormon history that most troubled me indicated many instances in which Mormon leaders have deceived both their followers and the public about important matters. Joseph Smith was the worst in this regard. His tendency to exaggerate or lie when in a tight spot bears a striking resemblance to the practices of shady stock promoters I have on occasion met relative to my legal practice,” the attorney stated.
“Mormon leaders at the local level are sincere and generally unaware of the issues I had raised,” said McCue. And he says that though he is critical of LDS leaders he knows they can be “genuinely loving.” “They believe God’s will requires that they mislead their followers,” he explained.

Mormon and Amish are totally unrelated. You shouldn’t confuse the two. For Mormon (correcty called The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) see the two official websites of the Church I gave above. I repeat them again here for you:

If I remember correctly there was a time catholics were flocking to say the rosary as a forgiveness for sins. Or was the rosary used as a forgiveness for indulgences.
You do not remember correctly. The Catholic Church never taught that the rosary could forgive sins. What you read is that the rosary, and other prayers as well, were and are sometimes assigned by the priest as activities for penance after someone has confessed their sins. The penance assigned should have the effect of re-focusing the penitent’s attention on the things of God, and giving strength against future temptation. Most of us have found the rosary very effective in this regard.

Other common penitential activities are scripture reading, fasting, community or church service of some sort, meditation before the blessed sacrament, etc.

There are also activities that may gain indulgences, provided the person is otherwise in a state of grace. These include prayer (including the rosary), prayerful scripture reading, service to others, pilgrimages, etc.

Remember that indulgences have nothing to do with the forgiveness of sins. To gain an indulgence, one must already be free of all serious sin.

Hope this helps,
Paul

I would write a piece about this for the local newspaper. Hate Crimes are newsworthy, and this is certainly hate if not a crime.

While extremely tasteless, and in its own way racist, I’m with Zerinus on this one. I don’t think it could be called a hate crime…

Hate literature yes, but not a crime. Just like Jack Chick publishes Hate literature. It isn’t illegal for Jack (or this women) to print and spread these things. One of the upsides (or down sides depending on your view ) of the 1st amendment.

As long as she isn’t calling for attacks of any kind on Catholics, she is free and clear

That being said, we can’t judge the Mormon Faith based on the lunacy of a few people. There may be things in it that are counter to what we believe, but keep in mind, Our own bible mentions frequently to stone people that stray too far (exodus, Deut.). One could, out of context, say the Bible is inflammatory and filled with a call to violence. But such a statement is out of context and is NOT what is called for.

I don’t agree with Mormon beliefs, but i don’t think its Mormonism thats ‘on trial’ here. but more the raving lunatics that print this garbage.

Do we want to judge Protestantism based on people like Chick?
Would we, as Catholics, want to be judged based on the few ‘wayward’ priests?

the OP handled the situation quite nicely if you ask me. I would have done something similar But to those that want to use this as an attack on Mormonism, i think thats taking it a step too far.

Agreed. BTW, heisenburg, are you uncertain? 😃 Sorry, I’m such a geek I couldn’t resist.
