Are we allowed to buy religious things such as spiritual books on Sunday?

That is a good question. I don’t know what the official Church teaching on that is, however, I once went to an online Catholic store and on their home page of their website there was a statement that said something like, “Please do not purchase anything from our online store on Sundays”. Not sure if it was this company’s personal opinion or if they were following the rules of the Church.

First of all, there is no express prohibition for Catholics to buy things on a Sunday, as long as you’re avoiding “excesses and violence” and not hindering fulfillment of your Sunday obligation or developing some habit prejudicial to “religion, family life, and health”.

Buying a spiritual book hardly seems to fall in any of the forbidden categories. Also, often religious stores or religious goods sales take place on Sundays after or between Masses for the express reason that the customers are present then. For example, one of the churches I attend had a religious goods sale last week after all the Sunday Masses for the benefit of the church, and shrines and cathedrals I visit often have gift shops that are open after the Masses although closed during the Masses.

It’s also worth noting that if you buy a religious item online during a Sunday from a Christian store, your order is likely going into some automated queue where a person will actually look at it and process it on Monday morning. Only the huge stores like Amazon would be having someone work on Sunday to process your order fast. Of course if the shop has a sign on its website asking you not to submit orders on Sunday you should abide by their wishes.

Bottom line is that there is nothing wrong with buying the book on a Sunday. If you, as a personal choice, would rather wait till Monday just to make absolutely sure no one has to work on the Sunday, then assuming the store is open Monday (and not just after Sunday Masses, see above) feel free to delay your purchase, but this is your choice, not a Church rule.

Yes. A man from Bethlehem comes to our church once a year around Easter, selling religious carvings made in the Holy Lands. They sell after mass when they are here.

Oh heqq.

Scrupulosity, anybody?

Every Catholic Church of tourist importance (the Vatican, Californian Missions, Notre Dame, Compostela, etc.) or even my DBS’s home parish, has a gift shop. If such a prohibition existed, these businesses would have vanished long ago.

YES, you are allowed to buy spiritual books on Sunday - so please buy your spiritual books directly from the brick-and-mortar parish bookstore if there is one, rather than through Amazon. There are a lot of brick-and-mortar parish bookstores who either have what you’re looking for or/and have affiliate links through Amazon whereby the parish gets a % of your purchase.

Every so often nuns from a nearby convent have a sale at the parish - on Sunday after mass. The Knights of Columbus sell Christmas cards every year at the parish - on Sunday after mass.

If I had a better memory, I could probably come up with many more examples. 🙂

no express prohibition on buying anything on sundays.

depends on your reason for doing it.

same goes for working or selling on sunday, depends on why.

You seriously need to get in a religious ed class or a get a Spiritual director. Every single say :
Is this a sin? Is this wrong? Am I sinning?

You suffer from a raging case of scruples.
Please seek help. Online forums only make it WORSE.

There is nothing wrong with it esp. if it supports religious communities or charities. Just avoid buying alcohol with the image of the Blessed Mother on a label of ‘Virgin Whisky’ or tabacco products that say ‘Heavenly Smokes.’ You know, I would not label you as 'scrupulous, but as person who is lonely for contacts. I wish you well and many prayers.

After Mass I often go into the Church shop on the Church grounds which sells items and books on Sundays. Why would that be a problem for anyone?
