Hello, I would like to ask a question. A while back I made a set-in-stone promise (that’s how I phrased it) to my family (and I guess to God) to cut back on my use of technology in preference to using paper ( for example, using a paper calendar vs. an iPhone calendar). I said the same thing for taking notes as well as using a kindle. I was about 19 at the time. Fast foward about 4 years and I would like to start using my technology to make notes and use e-books and calendar events and most importantly, purchase and use the Verbum Bible Study software. Do I need to ask my family to be released from those promises first? Do I ask a priest to release me of those promises? Am I being too scrupulous? Please let me know as soon as you can.

The best answer to these type of questions is to simply ask your priest. We have no idea how you came to make this promise. IMO yes it seems a bit of scrupulosity is involved. Obviously getting the Verbum software to grow in your Faith is not a bad thing but if you are using technology to the exclusion of human contact then that should be a concern.

I don’t know why you would make such a promise to your family, but no you don’t need to have them “release” you and you owe them no explanation regarding the use of technology. You are an adult. When you were younger, perhaps your parents worried about how much you used tech, but nothing you wrote seems troubling.
