Would believing you’d have a stay in purgatory show a lack of trust in the mercy of God?

Assuming that you believe in purgatory, why would it?
Dear friend, purgatory exists even if some say it doesn’t, just as London wouldn’t disappear even if someone wouldn’t believe it existed.

No. God’s mercy is allowing us to be saved from the fires of hell. Purgatory is more or less a cleaning up. If you are in a state of grace, you can obtain a plenery indulgence every day for yourself. Or you can donate it to the holy souls in purgatory.

Purgatory is not necessarily a palce than it is a process. For example. 2 older ladies, they never missed church, they go to mass daily: But they gossip about everyone there. That disposition that leads them to gosip will be purged.

it would show belief in the doctrine of purgatory and a clearer understanding of sin and its consequences than a blind reliance on God’s mercy that would be used to justify any sin you feel like committing.
