Matthew 12: 31-32 “Therefore, I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven; but whoever speaks against the holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.”
I just wanted to verify whether my understanding of the Catholic interpretation of this passage is correct. Some Catholic answers articles often associate this passage with purgatory:
“Christ refers to the sinner who “will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come” (Matt. 12:32), suggesting that one can be freed after death of the consequences of one’s sins.”
“The concept of an after-death purification from sin and the consequences of sin is also stated in the New Testament in passages such as 1 Corinthians 3:11–15 and Matthew 5:25–26, 12:31–32.”
“This declaration of our Lord implies at least some sins can be forgiven in the next life—a declaration to a people who already believed it. If Jesus wanted to condemn this commonly held teaching, he was not doing a very good job of it, according to Matthew’s Gospel.”
okay, so does that mean if I blaspheme against the Holy Spirit, then I asked for forgiveness/repented about it, I will still not be forgiven? That forgiveness for this sin will only be available after my death?
